JOURNEY in 1982, who visited Japan twice with his masterpiece “ESCAPE”. A new excavation of the original that conveys their first performance at Nippon Budokan. Introducing the Press 2CD, which leaves the brilliance of the climax forever.
Of course, what is recorded in this work is the performance of “April 16, 1982: Nippon Budokan”. It is the best audience recording. Speaking of performances in Japan during the “ESCAPE” era, “TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT (Zion-196)”, which was very popular the other day, is also new to my memory, but this work is different from that, and will come back to Japan nine months later. Above, all 7 performances. Fukuoka, Kyoto, and Yokohama were added to the performance venues that were only in Higashi-Meihan the previous year, and Tokyo was upgraded from the Kosei Nenkin Kaikan. To date, they have performed six times at the Nippon Budokan, and this day was also the first.
It is the best audience recording that tells us the scene that will be such a monument. At our shop, we have reported the same show in “BUDOKAN 1982 (Uxbridge 631)”, but this work is completely recorded separately. This work is the master that will be released for the first time, but the quality is shocking anyway. There are some songs that clapping their hands up close, but the performance sound that suppresses it from above is extremely thick and sticks. In particular, Steve Perry’s vocals are clear and powerful, and you can feel the nuances of each syllable rather than just one word of the lyrics. Although it is not transmitted to the actual position, the image of the sound is as close as if you were touching Perry in the front row (although it is actually a martial arts hall, so it does not reach even in the front row).
The feeling of separation is even more delicious. Perry’s singing voice approaches extremely thick, and even if the chorus that overlaps there is entwined, it does not mix. Each person’s singing voice is taut like a thread, and each line forms a three-dimensional object like a string figure. Of course, vocals and chorus are just easy-to-understand examples, and each of the instruments such as guitars, drums, and keyboards has the same clear outline. If you listen carefully with headphones, you can feel the component of the hall sound, but it is a rare recording that does not cause blurring or bleeding, but rather produces a crisp edge.
The vivid sound is drawn with the same “ESCAPE Tour” but a full show that is different from “TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT”. The official work “LIVE IN HOUSTON 1981” is the closest set, but it’s still not the same. Let’s organize while comparing.

Above all, the biggest feature is the large-scale behavior of the “ESCAPE” number that swept the whole world. “TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT” was a very rare set that didn’t do “Don’t Stop Believin'” or “Open Arms” because it was just after the album was released, but it changed when I came back to Japan. All the songs on the album except “Lay It Down” were shown, and it was a great offensive that occupied half of the show.
Of course, other classics are also delicious. “Lovin’You Is Easy” is the last song to be played in 1982, and the two rare “CAPTURED” songs and “DEPARTURE” “Line Of Fire” and “Where Were You” will be sealed for nearly 20 years. repertoire. The next year’s “FRONTIERS” will make it a further hit parade, but this work is just before that. It is irresistibly good idea to leave the scent of the challenger while fully spreading the response and self-confidence of the great success.
JOURNEY who scaled up once or twice and came back to Japan. It is a marvelous new excavation where you can fully experience the highlight performance with the highest quality. Powerful like a sound board, beautiful like an FM broadcast, yet the reality of the Western music boom with only guest records is wonderful. そんな本作に記録されているのは、もちろん「1982年４月16日：日本武道館」公演。その極上オーディエンス録音です。『ESCAPE』時代の来日公演と言えば、先日大好評を博した『TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT（Zion-196）』も記憶に新しいところですが、本作はそれとは異なる９ヶ月後の再来日。まずは一気にスケールアップした来日スケジュールから振り返ってみましょう。

以上、全７公演。前年は東名阪だけだった公演地に福岡・京都・横浜が加わり、東京も厚生年金会館から格上げ。現在までに彼らは６回の日本武道館公演を行っていますが、この日がその最初でもありました。
そんな記念碑となる現場を伝えてくれるのは、まさに極上のオーディエンス録音。当店では同じショウを『BUDOKAN 1982（Uxbridge 631）』でレポートした事もありますが、本作は完全に別録音。本作が初公開となるマスターなのですが、とにかくクオリティが衝撃的。わりと間近な手拍子が起きる曲もあるのですが、それを上から抑え込んで制圧するような演奏音が極太でド密着。特にスティーヴ・ペリーのヴォーカルはクッキリ・ハッキリと力強く、歌詞の一語どころか一音節に込められたニュアンスまで克明に感じられる。実際のポジションまで伝わっていないものの、音のイメージは最前列でペリーとタッチしているかのような間近感なのです（実際には武道館なので最前列でも届かないのですが）。
さらに美味しいのがセパレート感。ペリーの歌声が極太に迫りつつ、そこに重なるコーラスも絡み合っても混ざらない。１人ひとりの歌声が１本の糸のようにピンと張っており、それぞれのラインが綾取りのように立体物を形づくっていく。もちろん、ヴォーカルやコーラスはあくまでも分かりやすい例にすぎず、ギターやドラム、キーボードなど、楽器群も２つひとつが同じようにくっきりとした輪郭を描いている。ヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませればホール鳴りの成分も感じ取れはするものの、それがボケや滲みにならず、むしろキリッとしたエッジを演出している希有なる名録音なのです。
そんな鮮やかサウンドで描かれるのは、同じ“ESCAPE Tour”でありながら『TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT』とは様変わりしたフルショウ。セット的には公式作『LIVE IN HOUSTON 1981』が一番近いものの、それでも同じではない。比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。何よりも最大の特徴は全世界を席巻していた『ESCAPE』ナンバーの大盤振る舞い。『TOKYO 1981 1ST NIGHT』ではアルバム発売直後という事もあって「Don’t Stop Believin’」や「Open Arms」をやらない激レア・セットだったわけですが、再来日では一転。「Lay It Down」以外のアルバム全曲を披露し、ショウの半分を占めるほどの大攻勢となっているのです。
もちろん、それ以外のクラシックスも美味しい。「Lovin’ You Is Easy」は1982年を最後に演奏されなくなる曲ですし、レアな『CAPTURED』の２曲や『DEPARTURE』の「Line Of Fire」「Where Were You」も20年近く封印されるレパートリー。翌年の『FRONTIERS』によって更なるヒット・パレードとなっていくわけですが、本作はその直前。大成功の手応えと自信を存分に振りまきつつ、そこはかとなく挑戦者の薫りも残しているのがたまらなく良い案配だったりするのです。
