Headless, the highest jazz collector’s label, has reissued the precious titles of handmade labels for collectors, which were distributed only in a small part, from the official master who took over. Hawk is here. A rare title is re-appearing at an affordable price with a reissue emblem and a newly refurbished back jacket.
It is a live sound source of Joni Mitchell, which is a bit different from the West Coast system, which is categorized as a singer-songwriter but is jarring. Joni has been attracting attention from jazz fans with his masterpiece “Mingus” featuring Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius, but he is always worried about the backing band Mens. Here is the drum of Vinnie Colaiuta, who has a good reputation in the back of Frank Zappa and Sting, as well as the guitar master Michael Landau. If you can’t hear the cheers of the audience, it’s a great recording in which the vocals are captured so close that it’s mistaken for a sound board. The set list that starts with “Coyote” and ends with “Woodstock”, which represents Joni in the 70’s, is also attractive.

シンガーソングライターとカテゴライズされながらも耳障りの良いウェスト・コースト系とは一味違うジョニ・ミッチェルのライヴ音源です。パット・メセニーやジャコ・パストリアスを起用した名盤“ミンガス”でジャズ・ファンからも注目を集めるようになったジョニですが、毎度バックバンドのメンツが気になるところです。ここにはギターの名手マイケル・ランドウに、フランク・ザッパやスティングのバックでも定評のあるヴィニー・カリウタのドラムです。オーディエンスの歓声が聞こえなければサウンドボードと間違うほど近くヴォーカルがとらえられた名録音。70年代ジョニを代表する『コヨーテ』で始まり『ウッドストック』で終わるセット・リストも魅力的。
