Produced by Steve Lukather, the phantom album produced before “WHO ELSE!” is reprinted. In addition, it is the appearance of a studio work that collects rare tracks from the 80’s / 90’s.
This work contains 17 extremely rare tracks of 6 types. These are the hidden treasures from 1985 in the “FLASH” era to the “WHO ELSE!” era in 1999. It is best to introduce these rare trucks individually. Let’s get started.
Phantom album “THE STEAKHOUSE SESSIONS (1998)”
・ 4 songs: T-Boned / Hurricane / Rump-Roasted / Prime-Ribbed
The first thing to appear is the phantom studio album that is the cornerstone of this work. Produced by TOTO’s Steve Lukather, it was produced at his studio “THE STEAKHOUSE”. It seems that it was completed in 1998, but Jeff who was not satisfied with the content decided to store it. It is a phantom album that has not been officially released to date.
What is recorded in this work is the studio session for that phantom album. It’s not the full view of the album, but 4 songs (about 23 minutes), and the degree of completion is rough mix class. In addition to “Hurricane”, which was released live earlier, it is a studio work where you can enjoy three unreleased songs.
Also, this sound source is said to be attached. At the time when it was discovered … that is, in December 2002, one of the members of TOTO who happened to come to the store obtained this sound source title. When I returned and showed it to Lukather, Lukather was furious. The next day, Lukather came to the store in a hurry. “Honestly, who brought you this recording? How did you get it?” Now that 20 years have passed, this can be said to be a valuable experience and memory, but at this time, I was terrified. By the way, Lukather saw the 1980 TOTO Tokyo live DVD that had just been released and was very impressed. During the live MC, he said, “Yesterday, I saw a bootleg video. We were still kids. It’s a happy memory.” )”.) By the way, I talked about it in Young Guitar magazine and interviews at the time. (“When I saw Jeff, I cried.”)
●Guest participation in MOODSWINGS (1992)

Next recorded is a take in which Jeff participated as a guest in 1992. This is the official take recorded in the ambient band MOODSWINGS’ debut work “MOODFOOD”.
●European tour (1998)
・ 4 songs: Amsterdam Nights / Sending Sweets / Manic Depression / Hurricane
1998 again. Four songs known as “Amsterdam Session” are actually live recordings of the 1998 European tour. The unreleased song “Amsterdam Nights” is an extremely rare song that was played only at “July 7, 1998 Amsterdam Performance”, and the sound is also very wonderful. The remaining three songs are “July 15, 1998 Milan performance” one week later. Although the sound is one rank down, it is still an on-top high-end recording, and Jimihen’s cover and “Hurricane” are also shown.
● “FLASH” era outtake collection (1985)

Flying to the 80’s, 4 outtakes of “FLASH”. It is the most complete take in this work. “Jeff’s Anthem” is a guitar cover of Vangelis’ “Eric’s Theme” from the movie “Firerunners”.
IndyCar Race Opening Ceremony Live (1999)

American National Anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner” by Jeff and Jennifer Batten. It is the opening ceremony performance of the indie car race held at “April 18, 1999 Long Beach”.
● ELECTRIC LADYLAND STUDIO session (1986)
・3 tracks: Rehearsal #1 / Rehearsal #2 / Rehearsal #3
The last was a studio rehearsal at “Electric Ladyland”. Although the date is unknown, it may be a tour rehearsal before coming to Japan in 1986. In terms of content, it’s an improvisational jam session rather than a song. It feels like you are enjoying each other’s breathing, and you can hear happy conversations.
“The above is a collection of hidden treasures covering a total of 17 tracks.” The late 80’s and 90’s were a time when studio work was not blessed, but this work fills in the missing link. Now that the spotlight is on Jeff’s entire career, it is a piece that people in the know want to pay attention to.

スティーヴ・ルカサーをプロデューサーに迎え、『WHO ELSE!』以前に製作されたた幻アルバムが復刻。さらに80年代／90年代のレア・トラックも集成したスタジオ作品の登場です。
本作に収められているのは、６種・17曲に及ぶ激レア・トラックス。『FLASH』時代の1985年から1999年の『WHO ELSE!』時代に至るまでの秘宝たちです。こうしたレア・トラック系は個別にご紹介していくのが一番。早速はじめましょう。
●幻アルバム『THE STEAKHOUSE SESSIONS（1998年）』
・４曲：T-Boned／Hurricane／Rump-Roasted／Prime-Ribbed
まず登場するのは、本作の要となる幻のスタジオ・アルバム。プロデューサーを務めたのはTOTOのスティーヴ・ルカサーで、彼のスタジオ“THE STEAKHOUSE”で製作されました。1998年には完成したそうですが、内容に満足できなかったジェフがお蔵入りを決定。現在に至るまで公式リリースされていない幻のアルバムとなっています。
本作に収録されているのは、その幻アルバム用のスタジオ・セッション。アルバム全景ではなく４曲分（約23分）で、完成度もラフミックス級です。先にライヴで公開されていた「Hurricane」の他、未発表３曲が楽しめるスタジオ作品です。
また、この音源は曰く付きでもある。発掘された当時・・・すなわち2002年12月、たまたま来店されたTOTOのメンバーの一人ががこの音源タイトルを入手。戻ってルカサーに見せたところ、ルカサーは激怒。翌日、ルカサーが急遽来店。「正直に言え、この音源を誰が持ってきた？どうやって入手した？」と（真っ赤な顔で）店員につめ寄りました。20年が経過した今となっては、これもまぁ貴重な経験＆思い出と言えますが、この時は、流石にビビりました。ちなみに、ルカサーは、ちょうど発売されたばかりの1980年のTOTO東京ライヴDVDを見て、こちらは大いに感動。ライヴのMCでも「昨日、ブートレッグ・ビデオを観たんだ。自分たちがまだキッズ時代のものだ。幸せな思い出だ」と語っていました（そのMCはTOTOの『TOKYO 2002 2ND NIGHT（Uxbridge 1468）』で楽しめます。）ちなみに当時のヤング・ギター誌でもインタビューでもそのことを語っています。（「ジェフの姿を見て、涙がでた。」と）
●MOODSWINGSへのゲスト参加（1992年）
・１曲：Skin Thieves
続いて収録されているのは、1992年にジェフがゲスト参加したテイク。アンビエント系バンドMOODSWINGSのデビュー作『MOODFOOD』に収録された公式テイクです。
●ヨーロッパ・ツアー（1998年）
・４曲：Amsterdam Nights／Sending Sweets／Manic Depression／Hurricane
再び1998年。「アムステルダム・セッション」として知られる４曲ですが、実は1998年ヨーロッパ・ツアーのライヴ録音です。未発表曲「Amsterdam Nights」は「1998年７月７日アムステルダム公演」でしか演奏されていないという激レア曲で、サウンドも非常に素晴らしい。残り３曲は一週間後の「1998年７月15日ミラノ公演」。サウンドこそワンランク落ちるものの、それでもオンな極上級録音には違いなく、ジミヘンのカバーや「Hurricane」も披露しています。
●『FLASH』時代のアウトテイク集（1985年）
・４曲：Funk On The Nail／Jeff’s Anthem／No Filet Mignon, Just Greens／Escape
時代は80年代に飛んで『FLASH』のアウトテイク４曲。本作で最も完成度の高いテイクです。「Jeff’s Anthem」は映画『炎のランナー』に使用されたヴァンゲリスの「Eric’s Theme」をギターでカバーしたものです。
●インディカー・レースの開会式ライヴ（1999年）
・１曲：Star Spangled Banner
ジェフとジェニファー・バトゥンによるアメリカ国歌「星条旗」。「1999年４月18日ロングビーチ」で開かれたインディー・カーレースの開会式パフォーマンスです。
●ELECTRIC LADYLAND STUDIOセッション（1986年）
・３トラック：Rehearsal #1／Rehearsal #2／Rehearsal #3
最後は“エレクトリック・レディランド”でのスタジオ・リハーサル。日付不明ながら1986年来日前のツアー・リハかも知れません。内容的には曲というより即興のジャム・セッション。互いの呼吸感を楽しむような気ままな感じで、楽しそうな会話声も聞こえます。
以上、全17トラックに及ぶ秘宝集です。80年代後期ー90年代はスタジオ作品的に恵まれなかった時期ですが、本作はそのミッシング・リンクを埋めてくれる。ジェフのキャリア全体にスポットが当たっている今だからこそ、ぜひ注目して頂きたい知る人ぞ知る１枚です。
