Jeff Beck in 2011 opened the door to a new world with “EMOTION & COMMOTION” and was striving for further live activities. A live album that allows you to experience the scene is here.
“Performance in Kansas City on April 16, 2011” is imbued in this work. It is the best audience recording. “EMOTION & COMMOTION” also attracted attention as a studio work for the first time in seven years, but the live performance after that was amazing. In order to explain the meaning, let’s first look back at the whole scene of the activities at that time.

This is Jeff Beck in 2010/2011. Even before the release of “EMOTION & COMMOTION”, there were “TOGETHER & APART” with Eric Clapton and performances in Japan, but after the release, a raging world tour started. The high energy was momentum exceeding 150 performances in two years. This thorough tour activity has been since the first JBG in the 1960s. At that time, Jeff was over 65 years old, but he was immersed in the biggest live show in his life.
Such an era was left in his official live works “LIVE AND EXCLUSIVE FROM THE GRAMMY MUSEUM” and “ROCK ‘N’ ROLL PARTY”, but the Kansas City performance of this work was much later. It was the 15th performance of “North America #3”, about a year after the release of “EMOTION & COMMOTION”.
This work, vacuum-packed from such a show, is a superlative audience recording… maybe. I’m sorry for suddenly becoming unreliable, but the sound of this work is so line-like. Well, in fact, it has been published after clearly stating the recording position “right behind the PA table”, and the applause that erupts between songs is real. I’m sure it’s a customer record, but when the performance starts, I can’t get rid of the suspicion that “Is it really an audience?”
What’s more, when you think about the venue, it’s even more surprising. The “Uptown Theater”, which became the site, is an indoor theater with a capacity of 1,700 people, and it is an old building built in 1926. I can understand this if it’s an outdoor with zero echo or the latest architecture that makes full use of acoustic technology, but this 85-year-old cultural property has such a thick sound… After all, I can only think, “Is this really an audience?”
With such a tight sound, a full-fledged show that seems to be enjoying a live life is depicted. The above two official works are short and the concept is completely different, so it is not suitable for comparison, so here (although it is slightly apart in time) the press masterpiece of the Japanese performance “TOKYO 2010 FINAL NIGHT (Wardour-119) ], let’s organize the set.

At that time, the focus was only on the recordings made in Japan, and to be honest, the only overseas performances were “TOGETHER & APART”. However, the home of Jeff’s tour, which was the largest in his life, was rather overseas. This work is a masterpiece that allows you to fully experience the scene with a very thick / super direct sound that goes “just like a sound board” on the ground. Now that the spotlight is on Jeff Beck’s entire career, this is a masterpiece that you should pay attention to. Please enjoy it to the fullest.

★ The best audience recording of “Kansas City performance on April 16, 2011”. It is an ultra-tight recording that goes “as if it were a sound board”, and the suspicion “Is it really an audience?” The repertoire that was not played in Japan, such as “Plan B”, “You Never Know”, “Two Rivers”, and “Little Wing”, is also delicious, and the performance that was full of live performance was also excellent. It is a masterpiece live album that allows you to fully experience delicious overseas performances.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2011年４月16日カンザスシティ公演」。その極上オーディエンス録音です。『EMOTION & COMMOTION』も７年ぶりのスタジオ作品として注目を集めましたが、その後のライヴが凄かった。その意味をご説明する為にも、まずは当時の活動全景から振り返ってみましょう。

これが2010年／2011年のジェフ・ベック。『EMOTION & COMMOTION』発売前にもエリック・クラプトンとの“TOGETHER & APART”や日本公演もありましたが、発売後から怒濤のワールド・ツアーを開始。その高エンスは２年間で150公演を超える勢いでした。ここまで徹底的なツアー活動は、60年代の第一期JBG以来。当時のジェフは65歳を超えつつ、彼の人生でも最大級のライヴ三昧に没頭していたわけです。
そんな時代は公式ライヴ作『LIVE AND EXCLUSIVE FROM THE GRAMMY MUSEUM』『ROCK ‘N’ ROLL PARTY』にも残されたわけですが、本作のカンザスシティ公演はそれよりずっと後。『EMOTION & COMMOTION』発売から約１年後となる「北米#3」の15公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウを真空パックした本作は、極上級のオーディエンス録音……です、たぶん。突然頼りなくなって申し訳ありませんが、それほどまでに本作のサウンドはライン的なのです。まあ、実際のところは「PA卓のすぐ後ろ」という録音ポジションまで明言した上で公開されていますし、曲間に沸き立つ喝采もリアル。客録に間違いないとは思うのですが、いざ演奏が始まると極太な芯と距離感ゼロな鳴りに「本当にオーディエンス？」との疑念も拭い去れなかったりします。
しかも、会場を考えるとなおや驚愕。現場となった“アップタウン・シアター”は1700人規模の屋内劇場で、1926年建築の古い建物だったりする。これが反響ゼロの野外や音響技術を駆使した最新建築とかなら理解もできますが、築85年の文化財でこの極太サウンド……やはり「これ本当にオーディエンス？」としか思えないのです。
そんなタイト・サウンドで画かれるのは、ライヴ人生を謳歌するような絶好調のフルショウ。上記の公式２作は短かったり、コンセプトがまったく違ったりと比較に向きませんので、ここでは（時期的にはやや離れますが）日本公演のプレス名盤『TOKYO 2010 FINAL NIGHT（Wardour-119）』を引き合いにして、セットを整理しておきましょう。

当時は来日録音ばかりが注目され、正直なところ海外公演は“TOGETHER & APART”くらいでした。しかし、ジェフの人生最大級だったツアーの本場は、むしろ海外。本作は、その現場を「まるでサウンドボード」を地で行く極太／超ダイレクト・サウンドでフル体験できる大傑作なのです。ジェフ・ベックのキャリア全体にスポットライトが当たっている今だからこそ、注目していただきたい名作。どうぞ、存分にご堪能ください。
