IRON MAIDEN appeared in 1980 that shocked the whole world. The best masterpiece live album of the debut lineup with Dennis Stratton is upgraded! It will be released as a press CD that permanently preserves the detailed sound of “GRAF ZEPPELIN”.

[Legendary recording of the unparalleled Dennis era] “Performance in London on June 20, 1980” is engraved on this work. It is a superb audience recording recorded at the famous venue “Rainbow Theater”. This recording has been a famous recording representing the debut since long ago, but it was recorded by the prestigious Japanese “Kinney”. That prestigious family not only recorded in Japan, but also visited the UK many times to record their concerts. Numerous name recordings were left in 1980, and there was IRON MAIDEN who just debuted among them. Moreover, this work is newly retransferred from the original cassette. It is the highest peak update board finished with “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering.
Before the quality that bothers me, first of all is the position of the show. It’s also a good opportunity, so let’s take a bird’s eye view of Dennis’s enrollment period in the schedule.

This is the history of 1980 since joining Dennis. The exact date of joining is not known, but it seems that they joined at the timing of starting the production of their debut work “Hagane no Maiden”. It seems that the stage debut was the “METAL FOR MUTHAS Tour” in 1980. Speaking of records from the Dennis era, there are the Ruskin Arms video recorded in the official “THE EARLY DAYS” and the Reading Festival in the official “BBC ARCHIVES”, and this work is in between. It was the 31st performance of “UK #3”. Also, when I say “1980 Rainbow Theater”, the official video “LIVE AT THE RAINBOW” comes to mind, but that is “UK # 4” after joining Adrian Smith. It is a completely different performance from this work.

[The highest peak update board by high-precision re-digitization] Well, this show is legendary for producing a famous recording, but this work is an upgraded version of the highest peak of that legendary recording. “GRAF ZEPPELIN” is characterized by the obsessive precision work in each process, but the big thing this time is re-digitization. Since 2015, when the Omoto cassette was discovered, equipment and analog data reproduction know-how have progressed, and a remarkably high-precision transfer has been realized. Everything from the rise of each sound to the silence is clear, but what is easy to understand by listening is the applause that boils between songs. On the conventional board, the hammering peak is crushed and the ringing is unclear. It was a strange sound that wouldn’t come out even if you actually clap your hands. However, this work is super realistic. It is so natural and delicate that you can feel the “hands” in the venue firmly.
“Oops, don’t get me wrong here.” Nothing is saying “You can hear beautiful applause, it’s amazing”. It’s just a story that “the difference is easy to understand between relatively quiet songs”. The essential performance sound is also upgraded in the same way. Moreover, pitch/phase correction that does not allow deviations of 1/1000 second improves the detail and accuracy of each sound. The twin guitars are vividly separated, and the bass is crisp. If you say the metallic luster of a bass drum that is beautiful one by one even if you hit it repeatedly at a tremendous speed, it is a beautiful sound that is as good as an FM soundboard.

[The best masterpiece that should be called “Steel Virgin of Live”] A full show of IRON MAIDEN, who was not the king of heavy metal but the “Hero of NWOBHM”, was depicted with such an updated sound. As mentioned above, the Dennis era is symbolized by two official records, “Ruskin Arms Video (about 46 minutes)” and “Reading Fes SBD (about 29 minutes)”, but both are incomplete. On the other hand, this work can enjoy a full set (about 78 minutes) that greatly exceeds. In order to understand the sense of fulfillment, let’s organize the set while comparing here.

I’m dizzy with the preciousness of “Charlotte The Harlot”, which is unique to the early days, and “Strange World”, which has no official live performances, but the experience of being able to enjoy a full show is overwhelming.

【並ぶ物のないデニス時代の伝説録音】
そんな本作に刻まれているのは「1980年６月20日ロンドン公演」。名会場“レインボーシアター”で記録された超極上オーディエンス録音です。この録音は古くからデビュー当時を代表する名録音だったのですが、それを記録したのは何と日本の名門“キニー”。かの名門は来日録音だけではなく、幾度となく渡英しては本場のコンサートを記録していた。1980年にも数々の名録音が残されており、その中にデビューしたばかりのIRON MAIDENもあったのです。しかも、本作はその大元カセットから新たに再トランスファー。「GRAF ZEPPELIN」マスタリングで仕上げた最高峰更新盤なのです。
その気になるクオリティの前に、まずはショウのポジション。良い機会でもありますので、デニス在籍時代をスケジュールで俯瞰してみましょう。

これがデニス加入から1980年いっぱいの歩み。具体的な加入日は知られていないのですが、どうやらデビュー作『鋼鉄の処女』の製作に入るタイミングで加入した模様。ステージ・デビューは1980年に入ってからの“METAL FOR MUTHAS Tour”だったようです。デニス時代の記録と言えば、公式『THE EARLY DAYS』収録のラスキン・アームズ映像や公式『BBC ARCHIVES』のレディング・フェスがあり、本作はその間。「英国#3」の31公演目にあたるコンサートでした。また「1980年レインボーシアター」というと公式映像『LIVE AT THE RAINBOW』が思い浮かびますが、あれはエイドリアン・スミス加入後の「英国#4」。本作とはまったくの別公演です。

【高精度の再デジタル化による最高峰更新盤】
さて、このショウは名録音を生み出したことで伝説なわけですが、本作はその伝説録音の最高峰を更新したアップグレード盤なのです。「GRAF ZEPPELIN」は各工程で執念めいた精度の作業を行うのが特徴なのですが、今回大きかったのは再デジタル化。大元カセットが発掘された2015年より機材もアナログ・データの復刻ノウハウも進歩しており、格段に高精度なトランスファーが実現したのです。１音１音の立ち上がりから消音まですべてが克明になっているのですが、パッと聴いて分かりやすいのは曲間で沸き立つ拍手でしょうか。従来盤は打音ピークが潰れ、鳴りも不鮮明。実際に手を打ち合わせても出ない変な音になっていました。ところが、本作は超リアル。会場中の「手」がしっかりと感じられるほどナチュラルで繊細なのです。
おっと、ここでカン違いしないでください。何も「綺麗な拍手が聞けるぞ、スゴいだろ」と言っているのではありません。「比較的静かな曲間だと違いが分かりやすい」というだけの話。肝心要の演奏音も同じようにアップグレード。しかも、1/1000秒の狂いも許さないピッチ／位相補正によって１音１音の細やかさと精度が向上。ツインギターは鮮やかにセパレートしていますし、ベースもバッキバキ。猛スピードで連打しても一発一発が美しいバスドラの金属光沢と言ったら……それこそFMサウンドボードばりにも負けない美音が誕生したのです。

【「ライヴ篇の鋼鉄の処女」とも言うべき最高傑作】
そんな頂点更新サウンドで画かれるのは、ヘヴィメタルの王者ではなく「NWOBHMの英雄」だったIRON MAIDENのフルショウ。前述のように、デニス時代は２つの公式記録「ラスキン・アームス映像（約46分）」「レディング・フェスSBD（約29分）」が象徴ながら、どちらも不完全。それに対して本作は大きく上回るフルセット（約78分）が楽しめるのです。その充実感をご理解頂くためにも、ここで比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

The main press CD is a vertex update board that retransferred the legendary recording that has been regarded as “the best of the Dennis Stratton era” by maniacs for many years. “London, April 14, 1980” is included in this work. This is a shot of a person involved at the legendary club “Ruskin Arms” where IRON MAIDEN in the semi-professional era was based. … and it looks like this. The shooting ended at the end of the show “Charlotte The Harlot”, and the last “Iron Maiden” of the set and the encore “Drifter” are not recorded. I especially wanted to see “Iron Maiden” where Eddie in the death mask era smokes.

そんな本作に収められているのは「1980年４月14日ロンドン」。セミプロ時代のIRON MAIDENが根城にしていた伝説クラブ“ラスキン・アームズ”で撮影された関係者ショットです。本編解説の日程で言うところの「英国#2」最終日でして、記念すべき『鋼鉄の処女』リリース当日のステージでもありました。
そんなショウはデニス・ストラットン時代唯一の映像が残された事でも有名。実のところ、長い間「デニス時代の映像は存在しない：とされていたのですが、それが覆されたのは2004年にリリースされた『THE EARLY DAYS』。ボーナス・コンテンツとしてデニス時代のライヴ映像が収録されていたのです。本作は、その公式映像を復刻したもの。カテゴリーからすると「オーディエンス・ショット」になるのでしょうが、会場後方から三脚を使った安定感はズバ抜けていますし、事前に見どころを把握した上で果敢・大胆にズームするカメラワークは観客にはまず不可能（リフに合わせてグイッグイッと段階的にズームしていく「Prowler」など、曲を熟知して亡くてはあり得ません）。さらに、ダビング痕のないマスター・クオリティの映像美も併せ「スタッフ・ショット」と呼ぶしかない映像美なのです。
そんな関係者席から体験する極初期MAIDENは……もう感無量。ここでセットも整理しておきましょう。
