Ian Gillan in 1991/1992 hit a unique hard rock that is different from the old nest DEEP PURPLE in the masterpiece “TOOLBOX”. The superb original recording that will be the masterpiece is a new excavation.
The performance of “February 18, 1992: Nagoya Bottom Line” was imbued with this work. It is the super strong audience recording. Speaking of coming to Japan in the “TOOLBOX” era, “TOOLBOX IN JAPAN (Shades 257)” is a big staple in our shop, but this work is completely different. In order to explain the situation in that area, let’s first confirm the position of the show from the schedule at that time.

Above, all 6 performances. “TOOLBOX IN JAPAN” is a set of 2 performances in Nagoya and Osaka, and this work is also in Nagoya. The show is the same, but it’s a completely separate recording. And the shock is quality. Recently, it is a Nagoya recording series that has been producing masterpieces in rapid succession, but this work is a superb item that is outstanding even in that masterpiece collection. What is wonderful is the direct feeling that is extremely tight and close. It’s completely different from the “TOOLBOX IN JAPAN” master, which had a sense of distance, and it’s completely zero distance. Since it is a Nagoya collection, it can be judged as “definitely an audience recording”, but from the sound that flows out, it cannot be believed that it is an audience recording.
More to say, it’s (much) more amazing than the broadcast sound boards around. In fact, the classic of the “TOOLBOX” era is the German TV broadcast pro shot “GERMANY 1991”, but that soundboard sound is not a partner at all. I don’t know what kind of excavation will be made in the future, but at the moment this work is the official substitute for the “TOOLBOX” era, and there is no doubt that it will be recorded as a world champion.
What is drawn with such a masterpiece sound is a full show with full value. As mentioned above, the most famous of this era is the German TV broadcast pro shot “GERMANY 1991”, so let’s organize the set while comparing.

And that “TOOLBOX” number is insanely cool. Speaking of Ian Gillan’s solo activities, when he was enrolled in DEEP PURPLE, he had a wide range of rock and roll styles, and he tended to be hard rock during his withdrawal, and of course “TOOLBOX” was withdrawing from DEEP PURPLE. A lot of masterpieces of “unique hard rock different from purple” will be shown. The masterpiece “Candy Horizon”, the catchy melodic rock “Toolbox”, the unique dramaticism “Don’t Hold Me Back”, and the regular GILLAN rock’n’roll “Bed of Nails”. “And so on. It is the best masterpiece album of 90’s GILLAN where you can fully experience the live performance of the precious “TOOLBOX” number with the best sound more than the broadcast sound board. It’s a pity that he didn’t leave an official live album in the “TOOLBOX” era, but this work heals the dryness enough. That is one of the “official substitutes” that is suitable to stand side by side with “TOOLBOX”. Ah, I wanted to press!

★ The best masterpiece of the “TOOLBOX” era. This is a super strong audience recording of the “February 18, 1992: Nagoya Bottom Line” performance. Anyway, the direct feeling that is fiercely tight and close contact is shocking. The classic TV broadcast pro shot “GERMANY 1991” is also famous, but that sound board sound is not a partner at all. 名作『TOOLBOX』で古巣DEEP PURPLEとも違う独自のハードロックを叩きつけた1991年／1992年のイアン・ギラン。その最高傑作となる超極上のオリジナル録音が新発掘です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1992年２月18日：名古屋ボトムライン」公演。その超強力オーディエンス録音です。『TOOLBOX』時代の来日と言えば、当店では『TOOLBOX IN JAPAN（Shades 257）』が大定番ですが、本作はまったくの別物。その辺の事情をご説明するためにも、まずは当時のスケジュールからショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

以上、全６公演。『TOOLBOX IN JAPAN』は名古屋・大阪の２公演セットで、本作も名古屋。ショウは同じなわけですが、完全な別録音です。そして、衝撃なのがクオリティ。最近、傑作を連発している名古屋録音シリーズなのですが、本作はあの傑作コレクションでもズバ抜けた超極上品。なにが素晴らしいって、猛烈にタイトでド密着なダイレクト感。やや距離感のあった『TOOLBOX IN JAPAN』マスターとはまるで違い、もう完全にゼロ距離。名古屋コレクションだから「間違いなくオーディエンス録音」と判断できるものの、流れ出すサウンドからはとてもとてもオーディエンス録音とは信じられません。
もっと言いますと、そんじょそこらの放送サウンドボードより（遙かに）凄い。実際、『TOOLBOX』時代の定番と言えばドイツのTV放送プロショット『GERMANY 1991』があるわけですが、あのサウンドボード音声もまったく相手にならない。今後どんな発掘があるか分かりませんが、現時点では本作こそが『TOOLBOX』時代のオフィシャル代わりであり、ワールド・チャンピオン録音に間違いないでしょう。
そんな最高傑作サウンドで描かれるのは、貴重度満点のフルショウ。前述のように、この時代で最も有名なのはドイツのTV放送プロショット『GERMANY 1991』ですので、比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。旧GILLANからは「New Orleans」だけに留め、PURPLEクラシックスと『TOOLBOX』ナンバーの大盤振る舞い。当時は未発表曲「Blue Steel」まで飛び出します。
そして、その『TOOLBOX』ナンバーがめちゃくちゃカッコイイ。イアン・ギランのソロ活動というとDEEP PURPLEに在籍している時は幅広いロックンロール調で、脱退中はハードロックになりがちで『TOOLBOX』はもちろんDEEP PURPLE脱退中。「パープルとは違う独自ハードロック」全開の名曲群がたっぷり披露されるのです。哀感が疾駆する名曲中の名曲「Candy Horizon」やキャッチーなメロディック・ロック「Toolbox」、独自のドラマティシズムが胸を締め付ける「Don’t Hold Me Back」、正調GILLANなロックンロール「Bed of Nails」等々など。DEEP PURPLEだけでなく、旧GILLANとも違った英国ハードの極地が次から次へと飛び出し、久々の絶好調シャウトが切り裂いていく（ドイツのTV放送プロショットとは次元が違う美絶叫です）。『TOOLBOX』って、こんなにも良い曲が揃っていたのか……と、今さらのように気づかされるのです。
貴重極まる『TOOLBOX』ナンバーの生演奏を放送サウンドボード以上の極上サウンドでフル体験できる90年代GILLANの最高傑作アルバムです。『TOOLBOX』時代に公式ライヴアルバムを残してくれなかったのは残念至極ですが、本作はその乾きを十分に癒してくれる。それこそ『TOOLBOX』と並び立つのが相応しい「オフィシャル代わり」の１本。あーっ、プレスしたかった！
