“GLORY ROAD” and “FUTURE SHOCK” were sent to the top 3 in the UK in quick succession, and GILLAN in 1981 was at the height of the moment. Introducing a powerful soundboard album that makes Bernie Torme’s guitar dazzling.
Two performances are included in this work. This is a 2-disc set with stereo soundboard recordings of “June 25, 1981 Cologne Performance” & “June 29, 1981 Munich Performance” arranged on each disc. Speaking of 1981, the performance in Japan was realized, and it was also the year when Tome was replaced by Janick Gers. The time is extremely important, so let’s sort out the steps taken at that time.

This is GILLAN in 1981. The so-called “FUTURE SHOCK Tour” is a tour of England in early spring and a tour of Continental Europe in early summer. There, Tome withdrew, and Yannick stood on the stage at the next front stage “Reading Festival ’81”. In other words, the last of Tome’s “Europe” was also a West Germany tour with 13 performances. The official excavation board “ON THE ROCKS” is also left here, so let’s take a closer look at the position along with this work.

This is the last 13 performances of the Tome era. The official “ON THE ROCKS” is the 4th performance, and this work is the 8th and 12th performances. In particular, Munich on Disc 2 was the final concert, the second performance just before withdrawal. This work recorded in such two performances is a super powerful stereo sound board. Even if you say “sound board” in a bite, there are various personalities such as FM broadcasting that produced the venue experience, a table-directed type with a full-scale on-site mix, and a monitor type for staff work, but in the case of this work, the sound board “Mix table direct connection system” of enthusiast drinking. That is also the best class guy. As a matter of fact, the formalized “ON THE ROCKS” is also directly connected, so it can be said that it is “official”, but it is clear that there was no intention of making it into a work at the beginning of recording. While whispering in the distance, the cheers are forcibly screwed into the brain with a very thick and close performance. After a second-to-third experience such as a simulated concert, you will be intoxicated by the sense of synchronization that the band itself and the whole body are perfectly matched.
GILLAN, which had a dry-vin HR different from DEEP PURPLE, was drawn with such a direct sound. It’s very similar to “ON THE ROCKS”, but it’s not the same, so let’s organize the set together for the two performances.

… And it looks like this. I’m excited about the deadly number “Unchain Your Brain” that I couldn’t hear in “ON THE ROCKS”, but unfortunately both performances lack an intro. As you can imagine from here, the official “ON THE ROCKS” Aachen performance probably started with “Unchain Your Brain” as well. And, like this work, the intro was not recorded, so it was cut when it was commercialized. The engineer was recording the sound board for each performance, but I didn’t think about making it into a work, so I didn’t fix the habit of delaying the intro.
Aside from that, there is no doubt that the sound board album, in which live performances of the heyday and climax are directly connected to the brain, is bad. It is also the outtake board of the official “ON THE ROCKS”, and it is the last masterpiece of the Bernie Torme era that has advanced to the final stage. That is the brand among the brands that boast a value equal to or higher than the official masterpieces. Please enjoy the two performances together.

★ Stereo sound board recording set of “June 25, 1981 Cologne performance + June 29, Munich performance” just before Bernie Torme left. Especially the Munich performance is the last two performances of Tome. It is a superb class mix table direct connection system, whispering cheers in the distance, forcibly screwing a very thick and close performance into the brain. You will be intoxicated by the sense of synchronization that the band itself and the whole body match perfectly. You can also enjoy the deadly number “Unchain Your Brain” (although the intro is missing) that you can not hear on the official excavation board “ON THE ROCKS”, and you can experience the heyday and climax of your own HR with a feeling of drive that is different from DP. ..

『GLORY ROAD』『FUTURE SHOCK』を立て続けに全英トップ３に送り込み、刹那の全盛にあった1981年のGILLAN。バーニー・トーメのギターも冴えまくる強力サウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に収められているのは２公演。「1981年６月25日ケルン公演」＆「同年６月29日ミュンヘン公演」のステレオ・サウンドボード録音をディスク１枚ずつに配した２枚組です。1981年と言えば来日公演も実現しましたし、トーメからヤニック・ガーズへ交代した年でもあった。時期が極めて重要になってきますので、当時の歩みから整理してみましょう。

これが1981年のGILLAN。いわゆる“FUTURE SHOCK Tour”は春先の英国ツアーと初夏の大陸ヨーロッパ・ツアーの事。そこでトーメは脱退し、次の表舞台”レディング・フェス’81”ではヤニックがステージに立ちました。もっと言いますと、トーメ最後となった「欧州」のラストは13公演に及ぶ西独ツアーでもありました。ここではオフィシャルの発掘盤『ON THE ROCKS』も残されていますので、本作と併せてポジションを詳細に見てみましょう。

これがトーメ時代最後の13公演。公式『ON THE ROCKS』は４公演目であり、本作は８公演目・12公演目。特にディスク２のミュンヘンは脱退直前の２公演目という最末期のコンサートでした。そんな２公演で記録された本作は、超強力なステレオ・サウンドボード。ひと口に「サウンドボード」と言っても会場体験を演出したFM放送や現場ミックス丸出しな卓直結タイプ、スタッフ作業用のモニター・タイプなど個性はさまざまなのですが、本作の場合はサウンドボード・マニア溜飲の「ミックス卓直結系」。それも、極上クラスのヤツです。実のところ、公式化された『ON THE ROCKS』も直結系なので「オフィシャル風」と言えなくもないのですが、録音した当初に作品化の意図がなかったのは明らか。歓声も遠くにささやきつつ、極太ド密着な演奏を脳みそに強引にねじ込んでくる。コンサートの疑似体験など二の次三の次で、バンド自体と全身が完全一致するシンクロ感に酔いしれられるのです。
そんなド直結サウンドで描かれるのは、DEEP PURPLEとは違うドライヴィンなHRを極めていたGILLAN。『ON THE ROCKS』に酷似しつつも同じでもありませんので、２公演まとめてセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『ON THE ROCKS』では聴けなかった必殺ナンバー「Unchain Your Brain」に胸が熱くなりますが、惜しむらくは２公演ともイントロが欠けている。ここからは想像ですが、恐らくは公式『ON THE ROCKS』のアーヘン公演も、同じように「Unchain Your Brain」でスタートしていたのでしょう。そして、本作と同じようにイントロが録音漏れだったために、商品化に際してカットされた。エンジニアが毎公演サウンドボード録音していたが、作品化を考えていなかったからイントロが遅れるクセを直しもしなかった……そんな風に思えてなりません。
余談が過ぎましたが、全盛・絶頂の生演奏が脳みそド直結で流し込まれるサウンドボード・アルバムが悪かろうハズがない。公式『ON THE ROCKS』のアウトテイク盤でもありますし、さらに最末期へ進んだバーニー・トーメ時代最後の大傑作です。それこそオフィシャルの名作群と同等以上の価値を誇る銘品中の銘品。どうぞ、２公演まとめて存分にお楽しみください。
