The late George Harrison’s Japan tour in December 1991 was realized only in Japan in the world, and it was fully backed up by his best friend musician Eric Clapton and his band. As a super event that proved the strong friendship between the two, it has become a legend in the history of Western rock in Japan. Officially, a live album under the name of George has been released in the form of cutting the set of Clapton that was set in the middle and selecting the best take of the performance from the 12th to the 17th, but of course to this day. , Many sound sources of this Japan tour have been released from the audience source. However, this time we have obtained an audience master that has never been released! The date is December 12th. It is the 5th and final day of the Osaka-Jo Hall performance. As for the audience source of the day, “Rock Legends” (Mistral Music) was released in the past, but the sound quality is overwhelmingly better than that, and it is the highest level for the recording of the day. The master is from the Beatles enthusiast provider, recording with the best model Sony Recording Walkman Pro at the time, the recording place is the stand on the right side facing the stage. Because it was near the PA, it was possible to record the sound from the PA directly. The characteristic cheers of the audience also show that. However, because it is a Beatles mania, it is a first generation copy that only George’s performance part was recorded from the master tape on two Axia AU-IV X Metal 60 for listening & preservation. Unfortunately, because the master tape of Omoto was lost later, the single set part of Clapton is not recorded, but considering that the official live version is also released by cutting the part of Clapton, this work is ” I think you can enjoy it as the “Osaka version of the official version”. It will be released from Uxbridge because Clapton’s part is not recorded, but it has a punchy sound and a mild texture. Since the musical sound itself is clear and has the best separation, it is the sound quality that would normally be released on the press board from Tricorn without any questions.

He told Clapton that he would return to live and asked for his cooperation. Clapton was surprised by George’s decision, but he spared no effort. He convened his own band to manage the setlist decision from George’s repertoire, the division of parts and the selection of third guitarists, the arrangement of rehearsal venues, and the schedule. However, during the rehearsal, George repeatedly said, “I will stop returning.” It was traumatic to be hit by the media on the 1974 US tour. I didn’t really want to go back to live. So Clapton convinced George by recommending Japan as a tour location, where he listens to music warmly and seriously. And finally the Japan tour was realized. This Japan tour was, so to speak, a witness to the lifelong friendship between George and Clapton. The sound sources of all the performances have been released from this tour, but if you listen to them in chronological order, you can see George’s appearance as he regains his original tone as the days go by. 1991年12月に行なわれた故ジョージ・ハリスンのジャパン・ツアーは、世界でも日本だけで実現し、しかも大親友ミュージシャン、エリック・クラプトンと彼のバンドに全面バックアップされてのものだったということで、二人の固い友情を証明したスーパーイベントとして、もはや日本の洋楽ロック史上の伝説となっています。オフィシャルでは、中間に据えられていたクラプトンのセットをカットし、12日〜17日までの公演のベストテイクを選出する形でジョージ名義のライブ・アルバムがリリースされていますが、もちろん今日に至るまで、オーディエンスソースからこのジャパン・ツアーの音源は多数リリースされてきました。しかし、このたび当店はこれまで一切公開されたことのなかったオーディエンスマスターを入手致しました！日付は12月12日。大阪城ホール公演の5日目、最終日です。この日のオーディエンスソースは過去に「Rock Legends」(Mistral Music)がリリースされていましたが、それよりも圧倒的に音質が良く、この日の録音としては最高レベルです。マスターはビートルズマニアの提供者からで、当時の最高機種Sony Recording Walkman Pro で録音し、録音場所はステージに向かって右側のスタンド。PAの近くだったため、PAからのサウンドをダイレクトに録音できたとのこと。オーディエンスの歓声が特徴的なのもそれを物語っています。但し、ビートルズマニアゆえにリスニング＆保存用にジョージの演奏パートのみをマスターテープからAxia AU-IV X Metal 60 2本に収録していたというファーストジェネレーションコピーです。残念ながら、後年大元のマスターテープを紛失されたため、クラプトンの単独セット部分は未収録ですが、オフィシャルライブ盤もクラプトンのパートをカットしてリリースされていることを思えば、本作は「オフィシャル盤の大阪バージョン」としてお楽しみいただけるのではないかと思います。クラプトンのパートが未収録のためUxbridgeからのリリースとなりますが、パンチの効いたサウンドで、質感はマイルド。楽音そのものがクリアーで分離感最高の音なので、本来なら問答無用にTricornからのプレス盤でリリースされる音質です。
さてここで、このジャパン・ツアーが伝説と化した意味合いを当時のツアー・スケジュールから見ていきましょう。

3月9日から9月までオフだったことがお分かりでしょう。クラプトンは、前年の「ジャーニーマン・ワールドツアー」と2年続いてこなしたハードなロイヤル・アルバート・ホール連続公演が終了すれば、完全休養に入り、4歳になった幼い息子コナー君との生活をエンジョイするつもりだったそうです。ところが、その矢先の3月20日、あの事件が起こってしまいました。そこからクラプトンは、ご本人の言葉を借りれば「石のように」なってしまいました。幼い息子を失ったショックから、誰とも接触せず、自宅に引き篭もる生活が続きました。キース・リチャーズ、エルトン・ジョンに混じり、ジョージ・ハリスンからもすぐにクラプトンを気遣い慰める手紙が届けられました。クラプトンは友人ミュージシャンたちからの温かい言葉に励まされ、アルコール中毒匿名の会のミーティングに参加しながら、マネージャーのクルーザーで海に出るなど、何とか精神を正常に保ち続けました。そんな折、ジョージに会った際、クラプトンは前年にツアーで回った南米でファンにジョージの近況ばかりを尋ねられたと伝えたのです。ステージ復帰してもいいんじゃないか？というクラプトンの言葉をジョージは一笑に付し、この話を忘れることにしたのですが、ある日、ジョージははたと気づきました。「もし僕がツアー復帰するから手伝ってくれと言えば、エリックはその実行作業に追われ、あの辛い出来事から立ち直ってくれるのではないか？」そしてジョージはその気がなかったにもかかわらず、クラプトンにライブ復帰を伝え、協力を要請したのです。クラプトンはジョージの決断に驚いたものの、協力を惜しみませんでした。自らのバンドを招集し、ジョージのレパートリーからのセットリスト決定、パートの楽器分担とサード・ギタリストの人選、リハーサル会場の手配、スケジュールのすべてを取り仕切りました。しかしリハーサル中もジョージは「やっぱり復帰はやめる」と何度も言い出したそうです。74年の全米ツアーでマスコミから叩かれたことがトラウマになっていたとのこと。本当はライブ復帰などしたくはなかったのです。そこでクラプトンは、温かく、そして真剣に音楽を聴いてくれる日本をツアー場所に推薦し、ジョージを納得させました。そして遂にジャパン・ツアーが実現したというわけです。このジャパン・ツアーは、言わばジョージとクラプトンの生涯に亘った友情を目の当たりに示してくれたものだったのです。このツアーからは全公演の音源がリリースされていますが、時系列で聴いていくと、日を追うごとに緊張が解け、本来の調子を取り戻していくジョージの姿が分かります。それは12月10日の大阪公演あたりから完全なものとなりました。本作でもMCの量も多くなって打ち解けている様子が分かります。本作が、91年12月12日のジョージのジャパン・ツアー大阪5日目公演を最高音質で極めたファースト・ジェネレーションメタルテープマスターを最高の形で収録した決定版です！どうぞ二人の厚き友情を今また改めて確かめてください。
