1988 FOREIGNER was heading towards the end of the golden age while the single “Say You Will” became a big hit at No. 6 in the United States. Introducing a masterpiece original recording that conveys the performance in Japan.
This work was recorded at the “September 13, 1988: Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium” performance. It is a masterpiece audience recording that recorded the whole story. Normally, I would check the position on the schedule for coming to Japan, but the timing just before the activity stops is also important for this work. Here, let’s look back on the big picture of 1988.

This is 1988 FOREIGNER. “INSIDE INFORMATION” was released in December 1987, but the tour started more than half a year later. Moreover, it was too short, “3 performances in Europe + 6 performances in Japan + 1 performance in Sydney”. After that, Lou Gram withdrew after a suspension of activities. Despite its commercial success, the golden age has come to an end. Meanwhile, Yokohama Park of this work is the third performance from the end. This tour is also famous for the FM broadcast of Nippon Budokan, but this work was also the day before.
This work, which recorded such a show, is a full live album that is longer than the Nippon Budokan sound board. The Budokan has also been excavated with a sound board that is longer than the FM broadcast, but it is still incomplete or long enough to fit on one CD. On the other hand, this work allows you to fully enjoy a full show that lasts about 90 minutes.
And the sound is longer than the length. This is also excellent. The freshness is outstanding because it is directly made into a CD from the original cassette given by the recorder himself, but it is not the only one. The powerful core approaches zero distance and turns on fiercely. Although there is a sense of space in the growth of snares and vocals, it is also a story of tone level, the details are not clouded at all, and the atmosphere is crystal clear. Especially the guitar is intense, and it is super clear from the attack sound of the riff that growls and the long vibrato vibe. It really feels like Mick Jones is playing in front of you.

… And it looks like this. The set, in which 2-3 songs are evenly selected from all 6 albums, is just a summary. The most eye-catching is probably the number 3 song of “INSIDE INFORMATION”. All are ridiculously valuable. The hit single “Say You Will” has recently been performed in Osho, but Lou sang only in 1987, and “Heart Turns To Stone” was only performed on this tour. Even so, I could listen to these two songs on the Nippon Budokan sound board, but I couldn’t listen to “Can’t Wait”. Since the recording itself other than the Budokan is rare, it is a super rare song that the fact that this song was played is hardly known to the world. You can experience such a full show with a wonderful sound.

シングル『Say You Will』が全米６位に大ヒットとなりつつ、黄金時代の終焉に向かっていた1988年のFOREIGNER。その来日公演を伝える傑作オリジナル録音が登場です。
そんな本作が記録されたのは「1988年９月13日：横浜文化体育館」公演。その一部始終を記録した傑作オーディエンス録音です。いつもなら来日スケジュールでポジションを確認するところですが、本作は活動停止寸前のタイミングも重要。ここでは、1988年の全体像から振り返ってみましょう。

これが1988年のFOREIGNER。『INSIDE INFORMATION』がリリースされたのは前1987年の師走だったわけですが、ツアーが始まったのは半年以上が経ってから。しかも、「ヨーロッパ３公演＋日本６公演＋シドニー１公演」というあまりにも短いものでした。その後、活動休止を経てルー・グラムが脱退。商業的には成功を収めていたにも関わらず、黄金時代は終焉を迎えたのです。そんな中で、本作の横浜公園は最後から３公演目。このツアーは日本武道館のFM放送も有名ですが、本作はその前日でもありました。
そんなショウを記録した本作は、日本武道館サウンドボードよりも長尺なフル・ライヴアルバム。武道館もFM放送より長いサウンドボードが発掘されていますが、それでも不完全なのかCD１枚に収まる長さ。それに対し、本作は約90分に及ぶフルショウをたっぷりと楽しめるのです。
そして、長さ以上なのがサウンド。これがまた絶品。録音家本人から譲られたオリジナル・カセットからダイレクトにCD化されているだけあって鮮度バツグンなのですが、それだけではない。力強い芯がほとんどゼロ距離に迫り、猛烈にオン。スネアやヴォーカルの伸びには空間感覚はあるものの、それも音色レベルの話であってディテールがまったく曇らず、空気感もクリスタル・クリア。特にギターは強烈で、グキュグキュと唸りを上げるリフのアタック音からロングなヴィヴラートのヴァイヴまで超鮮明。本当に目の前でミック・ジョーンズが弾いているようなド密着感です。
そんなサウンドで描かれるショウは、貴重な『INSIDE INFORMATION』ナンバーも眩しいフルショウ。日本武道館サウンドボードと比較しながらまとめてみましょう。
