Following their first new album in 15 years, EXTREME is less than a month away from their first visit to Japan in 7 years. The latest video that is perfect for “now” has arrived.
This work includes the “Reading performance on August 8, 2023.” This is a spectacular audience shot taken during one act of the currently ongoing “THICKER THAN BLOOD Tour.” It’s been a while since we reported on EXTREME from our store, and this is the first time since the new coronavirus pandemic. This is also a good opportunity to take a closer look at their schedules and get an idea of what they’re up to.

This is the schedule for 2022-2023 that has been announced so far. In other words, a summary of our post-pandemic activities. In April, Gary Cherone went on a mini-tour as the frontman of JOE PERRY PROJECT (you can enjoy it in our store’s “BOSTON 2023 (Shades 1756)”), but around the time of the release of “SIX”, he went on an EXTREME tour. Dedicated. The Redding performance of this work was the fifth concert of “North America #2″, the first full-scale tour after resuming activities.
This work, which is a vacuum-packed version of such a show, is a spectacular video with the “super” rating. After all, I have no idea what the shooting position is. Normally, no matter how spectacular the scenery is, you can see the shooting environment when you set the viewpoint during the opening part of the park, but in this work, the scenery is spectacular from the moment it starts. While looking straight ahead at the drum kit, the audience was completely out of frame. It’s also at the same eye level as the members on stage, so you can’t help but make eye contact with them. What’s more, even though they don’t seem to be making full use of the zoom, each member fills the screen and captures the highlights. Particularly amazing is the scene between Gary and Nuno Bettencourt. Even though the shooting position does not change with one camera, the composition is captured in a way that makes it look like a picture.
This spectacular view and photography technique can hardly be called an “audience shot.” No, in terms of category, it’s definitely a video from the audience seats, but the angle is so ideal, the camera work seems to know how Gary will move in advance, and the sound is so good that the surrounding noise doesn’t come in at all. However, it would be much easier to understand if someone said, “Actually, this is a staff shot taken by a person involved.”
A full show with such transcendent quality that seems to be a preview of the upcoming Japanese performance. Speaking of the current live performance, there is also the official live work “TAKE US ALIVE” (although it has been a while), so let’s compare and organize it.

…and it looks like this. The band opened with the new song “#Rebel”, and continued to intersperse the all-time best with new songs. There is also a medley performance, so not all songs are complete, but I think you can understand the approximate balance. And the performance that spells out such a set is amazing. Too amazing. Nuno shows no signs of slowing down in the slightest, and his sharp right hand and dancing left hand are both sharp and clear. Even more intense is Gary, whose crisp staging is still alive and well, making him look like an athlete. You’d think he’s over 60 years old, but he visualizes the groove with his sharp actions.
There are only a few days left until the first performance in Japan in 7 years. It’s a piece that calms that feeling of enthusiasm…instead, it stirs it up even more. A masterpiece of video that goes beyond a mere on-site experience and conveys a full show with an extremely spectacular view that can only be seen as being filmed by the staff. It’s a masterpiece that you can’t ask for any better than this, whether you’re preparing for the show or enjoying the afterglow after the show. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

★Superb audience shot of “August 8, 2023 Reading Performance”. The angles where each member fills the screen and captures the perfect composition, the camera work that seems to know how Gary will move in advance, and the superb sound that completely ignores the surrounding noise, all of which make you think, “Actually… It would be much more convincing if someone told me, “This is a staff photo shoot.” It is a video masterpiece that allows you to monopolize the latest full stage of the delicious new song “SIX”.

15年ぶりの新作に続き、７年ぶりの来日まで１ヶ月を切ったEXTREME。そんな「今」にぴったりの最新映像が到着です。
そんな本作に収められているのは「2023年８月８日レディング公演」。現在進行中の“THICKER THAN BLOOD Tour”の一幕で撮影された絶景オーディエンス・ショットです。当店からEXTREMEをレポートするのは久しぶりで、新型コロナ・パンデミック後では初。良い機会でもありますので、ちょっと広めにスケジュールを俯瞰し、彼らの近況を把握してみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されている2022年ー2023年のスケジュール。つまり、パンデミック後の活動概要です。４月にはゲイリー・シェローンがJOE PERRY PROJECTのフロントマンとしてミニツアーを行ったりもしました（当店の『BOSTON 2023（Shades 1756）』でお楽しみ頂けます）が、『SIX』リリース前後からEXTREMEに専念。本作のレディング公演は活動再開後、初の本格ツアーである「北米#2」の５公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウを真空パックした本作は、「超」の付く絶景映像。何しろ、撮影ポジションがさっぱり分からない。普通、どんなに絶景の映像でも開園パートで視点を定める際に撮影環境が分かるものですが、本作に限ってはスタートした瞬間から超絶景。ドラム・キットを真っ正面に見据えつつ、観客の姿は完全にフレームアウト。ステージ上のメンバーと同じ目線の高さでもあり、思わず目が合いそうになります。しかも、それほどズームを駆使している風でもないのに各メンバーが画面いっぱいになりつつ、見どころをビッシビシと押さえまくる。特に凄いのがゲイリーとヌーノ・ベッテンコートが絡むシーン。ワンカメで撮影位置は変わらないのに、画になる構図で捉えられているのです。
この絶景ぶりと撮影技は「オーディエンス・ショット」とは呼びづらい。いや、カテゴリー的には間違いなく客席映像なのですが、あまりにも理想的なアングルも、事前にゲイリーがどう動くかを知っているかのようなカメラワークも、周囲の喧騒がまるで入ってこない極上サウンドも、「実は関係者によるスタッフ・ショットです」と言われた方がよほどすっきり納得できるのです。
そんな超絶クオリティで描かれるのは、来る日本公演を先取りするかのようなフルショウ。現編成のライヴというと（やや時間が経っていますが）公式ライヴ作『TAKE US ALIVE』もありますので、比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。オープニングから新曲「#Rebel」で幕を開け、その後もオールタイム・ベストに新曲を散りばめたスタイル。メドレー演奏もあるので全曲完奏ではありませんが、おおよそのバランスはご理解頂けると思います。そして、そんなセットを綴るパフォーマンスがスゴい。凄すぎる。ヌーノは衰えなど微塵も感じさせず、キレッキレの右手も舞い踊る左手も冴えに冴えまくり。さらに強烈なのがゲイリーで、キビキビとしたステージングは今なお健在で、まるでアスリート。とても還暦を超えた人間とは思え内シャープなアクションでグルーヴを見える化していくのです。
７年ぶりの来日公演まであと少し。そのはやる気持ちを鎮める……どころか、一層掻き立ててしまう１枚です。ただの現場体験を超え、スタッフ撮影としか思えない超絶景でフルショウを伝える映像傑作。ライヴ前の予習にも、終わった後の余韻にもこれ以上は望めない最上の逸品。どうぞ、思う存分お楽しみください。
