In the early 90’s, EXTREME made a breakthrough and toured the world as a worldwide band. Two new masters that convey the glorious scene will be released at the same time.
This simultaneous release is a sister work from the same recording artist’s collection. This work is an exquisite audience recording of the second edition, “July 21, 1992 Vienne Performance”. Both of these sister works are the European leg of the “PORNOGRAFFITTI Tour”, but the recording times are more than a year apart. In order to organize the circumstances around this, let’s take a look at the activity summary and schedule.

“III SIDES TO EVERY STORY Tour”

This is EXTREME from the peak “PORNOGRAFFITTI” era. The sister work “UTRECHT 1991 (Shades 1809)” released at the same time was the record of their first European leg “Europe #1”, but the Vienne performance of this work was released one year and two months later on the final stage of the tour “Europe #1″. 3”. This was the 13th concert.
Why are these two works sisters, even though they are from different countries and time periods? That’s because the recording person is the same. Yes, this work is also recorded by the popular master “Stephane”. However, while “UTRECHT 1991” was digitized from the original cassette in his possession, this work is the 2nd generation. This item was also unearthed from the treasured collection of Mr. GManOF, a collector who has become a hot topic in recent years. The sound is exactly as it is. In the opening part, the recording volume is not fixed and it feels a little unstable, but that improves by the time the first song “It (‘s a Monster)” starts. The direct feeling of the extremely thick core approaching without any sense of distance is truly a recording by “Stephane”, and the state of preservation of the tape is unique to the “GManOF” collection. Although there are no traces of dubbing due to the feel of the sound, the fine details and vivid separation remain beautifully.
What is depicted in such a young generation sound is a full show of EXTREME, which has acquired a sense of world wide scale after a long world tour. The set has also changed from “UTRECHT 1991”, so let’s compare and organize it here.

…and it looks like this. The focus is still on the big numbers of “PORNOGRAFFITTI”, but the variety has expanded. The new song “Cupid’s Dead”, which will be included in the next album “III SIDES TO EVERY STORY”, has begun to be performed, and “Flight Of The Wounded Bumblebee” has also been featured in the guitar solo. The fun cover slot has also been replaced by the Beatles’ “Help!”
After experiencing the biggest world tour of their career for two and a half years, EXTREME has grown as if they were reborn. This is a sister work in which the same recording artist captured the first half and the end of such a tour. Each one is a masterpiece of a live album, and by combining the two, you can feel the growth of the band through its golden age. Simultaneous release that is enjoyable and delicious because of such an audience recording. Please enjoy both works together.

ブレイクスルーを果たし、一気にワールド・ワイドなバンドとして世界を巡っていた90年代初頭のEXTREME。その栄光の現場を伝える新マスターが2種同時リリース決定です。
今回同時リリースとなるのは、同録音家コレクションから飛び出した姉妹作。本作はその第二弾にあたる「1992年7月21日ヴィエンヌ公演」の絶品オーディエンス録音です。今回の姉妹作はどちらも“PORNOGRAFFITTI Tour”のヨーロッパ・レッグですが、録音時期は1年以上違う。その辺の事情を整理するためにも、ここでも活動概要をスケジュールで俯瞰しておきましょう。

これが絶頂『PORNOGRAFFITTI』時代のEXTREME。同時リリースの姉妹作『UTRECHT 1991(Shades 1809)』は彼ら初のヨーロッパ・レッグ「欧州#1」の記録だったわけですが、本作のヴィエンヌ公演は1年2ヶ月後のツアー最終盤「欧州#3」。その13公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
国も時期も異なっていながらなぜ、今回の2作が姉妹なのか。それは取りも直さず、録音者が同じだから。そう、本作も話題の達人「Stephane」氏録音なのです。ただし『UTRECHT 1991』が本人所蔵の大元カセットからデジタル化されたのに対し、本作は2ndジェネ。これまた近年話題のコレクター「GManOF」氏の秘蔵コレクションから発掘されたのです。そのサウンドは、まさに素性通り。開演パートでは録音ボリュームが定まらずにやや不安定な感じもしますが、それも1曲目「It (‘s a Monster)」の歌入り頃には改善。極太な芯が距離感なく迫るダイレクト感はさすが「Stephane」氏録音ですし、極上級なテープの保存状態は「GManOF」氏コレクションなればこそ。鳴りの感触からダビング痕も皆無ではないものの、細やかなディテールも鮮やかなセパレート感も見事に残されています。
そんな若ジェネ・サウンドで描かれるのは、長大なワールド・ツアーを経てワールド・ワイドなスケール感を身に纏ったEXTREMEのフルショウ。セットも『UTRECHT 1991」とは変化していますので、ここで比較しながら整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。相変わらず『PORNOGRAFFITTI』ナンバーの大盤振る舞いが軸ですが、バラエティは拡大。次作『III SIDES TO EVERY STORY』に収録される新曲「Cupid’s Dead」が披露され始め、ギターソロで「Flight Of The Wounded Bumblebee(熊蜂の飛行)」も取り上げられるようになってきた。お楽しみカバー枠もビートルズの「Help!」に代わっています。
丸2年半に及ぶキャリア最大のワールド・ツアーを経験し、生まれ変わったように成長を遂げたEXTREME。そんなツアーの前半と終盤を同一の録音家が捉えた姉妹作です。1本1本がライヴアルバムの傑作であり、2本併せることで黄金時代を経たバンドの成長も感じ取れる。そんなオーディエンス録音だからこその愉しみも美味しい同時リリース。ぜひ、2作併せてご堪能ください。
