In the early 90’s, EXTREME made a breakthrough and toured the world as a worldwide band. Two new masters that convey the glorious scene will be released at the same time.
This simultaneous release is a sister work from the same recording artist’s collection. This work is the best audience recording of the first “May 8, 1991 Utrecht performance”. EXTREME has been actively performing live since before their debut, but most of their live performances have been in the United States. It is said that their first full-fledged overseas performance was in 1989 when they came to Japan, and their European tour was finally realized in 1991. This is also a good opportunity, so let’s unravel the schedule of the peak “PORNOGRAFFITTI” era and check the position of this work.

This is EXTREME from 1990 to 1992. The simultaneously released sister work “VIENNE 1992 (Shades 1824)” is the final “Europe #3” of the same “PORNOGRAFFITTI Tour”, but the Utrecht performance of this work was over a year earlier. This was the 6th concert of “Europe #1”, which was also their first European tour.
This vacuum-packed version of such a show is a new masterpiece from the much-talked-about master collection. The master is “Stephane”. He is a person who left behind a large number of famous recordings in continental Europe in the late 80’s and early 90’s, including the IRON MAIDEN press masterpiece “DEFINITIVE PARIS 1993 (Zodiac 469)”, “PARIS 1988 1ST NIGHT (Shades 1763)”, A series of popular works such as SCORPIONS’s “PARIS 1990 (Shades 1737)” and MOTLEY CRUE’s “PARIS 1989 (Shades 1761)”. WHITESNAKE’s “DORTMUND 1990 DEFINITIVE MASTER (Shades 1821)”, which was recently released and received favorable reviews, is also the work of this recording artist. This work is the latest edition, the EXTREME edition.
In fact, the sound of this work is so great that it further enhances the master’s reputation. Anyway, the core is strong and the details are clear. Although it gives a strong sense of audience-likeness, it is only a matter of tone level. Every word of the lyrics is clear and vivid, the funky groove is delicious with the rhythm section, and of course, the virtuosity of Nuno Bettencourt, who was attracting attention as a guitar hero of the new era, can be understood down to the nuance of each note. While there is a realistic on-site feel that cannot be achieved with an Asundo board, the listenability is as clear as an FM broadcast.

…and it looks like this. All songs except for the debut work “Play With Me” and WILD CHERRY’s cover “Play That Funky Music” are new “PORNOGRAFFITTI” numbers at the time. Normally, even during a breakout period, the set list when an album is first released usually consists of at most half of the new songs. However, this work is almost completely filled with new songs (although it is not a complete reproduction), and you can clearly see how much confidence they had in “PORNOGRAFFITTI” at the time.
And the performance that spelled out the set was filled with confidence and ambition. “PORNOGRAFFITTI” was their first hit in the Dutch charts, reaching number 16, and they were filled with elation from the reception. Even though the potential that created the famous album is already sharp, the dynamism that is added to it with the excitement of going to Europe for the first time is amazing.
Although he continued to release masterpieces after that, looking back, the “PORNOGRAFFITTI” era was his breakthrough and peak. 今回同時リリースとなるのは、同録音家コレクションから飛び出した姉妹作。本作はその第一弾にあたる「1991年５月８日ユトレヒト公演」の極上オーディエンス録音です。EXTREMEはデビュー前から精力的にライヴを行ってきましたが、その現場はほぼほぼアメリカ国内。本格的な海外公演は1989年の初来日だったとも言われ、欧州ツアーは1991年になってようやく実現しました。良い機会でもありますので、絶頂の『PORNOGRAFFITTI』時代をスケジュールで紐解き、本作のポジションも確かめてみましょう。

実際、本作のサウンドは達人の名声をさらに高める素晴らしさ。とにかく芯が力強く、ディテールも鮮明。オーディエンスらしさももしっかりと感じさせつつ、それはあくまで音色レベルの話。歌詞の一語一語までくっきりした鮮やかさ、ファンキーなグルーヴも美味しいリズム隊、もちろん新時代のギターヒーローとして注目を集めていたヌーノ・ベッテンコートの妙技も１音１音のニュアンスまで分かる。アスンドボードではあり得ないリアルな現場感はありつつ、聴き応えはFM放送級というクリアさなのです。

……と、このようになっています。デビュー作の「Play With Me」とWILD CHERRYのカバー「Play That Funky Music」以外はすべて当時の新作『PORNOGRAFFITTI』ナンバー。通常、以下にブレイク期であってもアルバムが出た当初のセットリストは多くても新曲が半分くらいが相場。ところが本作は（完全再現でこそないものの）ほぼほぼ新曲で埋め尽くされており、いかに当時の彼らが『PORNOGRAFFITTI』に絶大な自信を持っていたのかがよく分かります。
そして、そのセットを綴るパフォーマンスにも自信と野心が漲っている。『PORNOGRAFFITTI』はオランダ・チャートでも16位と初ヒットを記録しており、その歓待を受けた高揚感たっぷり。ただでさえ大名盤を創り上げたポテンシャルがキレッキレなのに、そこに初めての渡欧に燃え上がるテンションまで上乗せされた躍動感が凄いのです。
