This week, we will be releasing a rare US cassette tape reprint CD of Eric Clapton’s official compilation album “BLUES”. This disc was originally officially released in 1999, and is one of the few works in Clapton’s main discography that was not released on analog record. However, a cassette tape version was quietly released in America. This precious vintage official original cassette (set of 2) has been meticulously digitized. Since there are no records, this is the first 2-CD set that allows you to listen to analog sound. The contents are well-received by Clapton fans, and include valuable unreleased songs and versions, making it a well-organized work under the concept of “BLUES”. When digitizing the cassette, it was played using “Dolby B” as written on the cassette itself. In comparison with the sound source of the same CD title, we judged that the sense of left-right separation (stereo separation) and high-pitched sounds were better. We hope you enjoy the analog, warm sound that brings back the 70’s with this album. This can be said to be a sound typical of Clapton.

[By far the most outstanding content on Clapton’s compilation album]

At the time of its release, this work was released in two versions: 1CD containing only the studio version and 2CD with an additional CD containing the live version. The price as well as the content felt like a bargain, and of course the 2CD was the one that was worth it. The cassette also reflected this and was a set of two. The song selection ranges from his time with Derek and the Dominos in 1970 to his solo days in 1981 (album “ANOTHER TICKET”), and includes the blues excellence that Clapton was immersed in from the 70s to the early 80s. You can enjoy the performance. There are some questionable parts about the inclusion of ballad-like songs such as To Make Somebody Happy on the studio disc and Wonderful Tonight on the live disc, but this is because the music selector thought these songs were “Clapton Blues”. You can understand that you have captured it.

A valuable aspect of this work is that it included unreleased songs and versions that were shown here for the first time. Some of it was available as a bootleg, but as expected, it was officially recorded, with perfect sound quality, and a mix. These are the four songs on the studio disc: Before You Accuse Me (Take a Look Yourself) Version 1 and Version 2, Alberta, and Meet Me (Down at the Bottom).

Before You Accuse Me is an outtake from the recording of the album “BACKLESS” in 1978, and both versions 1 and 2 are played electric, but the rhythm arrangements of the two are completely different. 1 is a fast tempo centered around riffs, and 2 is a shuffle. This song was officially included in the album “JOURNEYMAN” released in 1989, so you can see that 11 years before that, they were trying through trial and error to make this song into something. Two really interesting versions.

“Alberta” is an outtake from the recording of the album “SLOWHAND” in 1977, and is performed by Clapton alone, which is similar to a demo. It was not included in the album, but the reason is probably that the acoustic number All The Way was included to avoid duplication of acoustic numbers. Still, this song seems to have been a favorite of Clapton’s, and I recall that he often played it in the middle acoustic set during the tour for this album. He also did some studio recording. Martin’s tone with the chord strokes is really beautiful.

Meet Me (Down at the Bottom) is an outtake from the recording of the album “461 OCEAN BOULEVARD” in 1974. Although it was possible to listen to it in the boot, it was recorded here with a perfect sound quality that exceeds that. It’s a number that reflects the laid-back mood of that album.

While there are no unreleased takes on the live disc, songs for which there were no studio recordings at this point in Clapton’s career include Stormy Monday, Worried Life Blues, Kind Hearted Woman, Driftin’ Blues, Crossroads, and Further on Up. One example is the Road. At live performances, Clapton would freely pull out these numbers from his memory drawer and play them (this has not changed). Further on Up the Road (Convention Center, Dallas, TX, USA 15th November 1976) from Freddie King’s memorial compilation album “Freddie King 1934-1976” has Clapton calling out “Freddie King!” before the song on the original version. In addition to containing a cut version of it, it also includes the complete solo part of George Terry, the second guitar player, who was cut and edited in “Freddie King 1934-1976”. Contains the full version (which is why the recording time is significantly longer).

This is an excellent compilation that allows you to listen to Clapton’s wonderful performances from various eras all at once, as every album he releases from the past always includes at least one old blues song. There is almost no duplication with the set list of Clapton’s “NOTHING BUT THE BLUES TOUR” from 1994 to 1995 following the release of “FROM THE CRADLE”, so it is not from the 90’s but from the 70’s to early 80’s. You will be able to fully enjoy “Clapton Blues” with the “analog sound” typical of that era. Enjoy the warm sound of this extremely rare cassette version.

今週、エリック・クラプトンのオフィシャルコンピレーション盤「BLUES」の珍しいUSカセットテープの復刻CDをリリースします。本盤は、元々1999年にオフィシャルリリースされたもので、クラプトンのメイン作品ディスコグラフィーでアナログレコードのリリースがなかった数少ない作品の内の１つです。しかしひっそりとカセットテープバージョンはアメリカでリリースされていたのです。この貴重なヴィンテージ公式オリジナル・カセット（2本組）から細密にデジタル化。レコードが存在しないので、初のアナログサウンドで聴ける2枚組CDとなります。内容は、クラプトンファンからも世評が良い1枚で、貴重な未発表曲・バージョンを含み、「BLUES」というコンセプトの下、よくまとめられた作品となっています。デジタル化に際しましては、カセット本体に書かれていたとおり「ドルビーB」で再生を行ないました。同CDタイトルの音源との比較では、左右分離感（ステレオセパレート）と高音の抜けが良いと判断しました。本盤で70年代を甦らせるアナログチックでウォームなサウンドを是非味わっていただければと思います。これぞまさに、クラプトンらしいサウンドと言えるでしょう。

【クラプトンのコンピレーション盤では群を抜く秀逸な内容】

リリース当時、本作はスタジオバージョンのみを収録した1CDとライブバージョンを収録したCDを追加した2CDの2バージョンがリリースされました。内容とともに価格もお買い得感があって、価値があったのはもちろん2CDの方でした。カセットもそれを反映して2本組となっていました。選曲は、70年のデレク・アンド・ザ・ドミノス時代からソロ時代の1981年（アルバム「ANOTHER TICKET」)までから行なわれており、70年代～80年代初期にどっぷりクラプトンが浸かっていたブルースの卓越したパフォーマンスを楽しむことができます。スタジオディスクでTo Make Somebody Happy、ライブディスクで Wonderful Tonightのようなバラードぽい曲が含まれているのが「？」な部分もありますが、これは選曲者がこれらの曲を「クラプトン・ブルース」と捉えたのだと理解できるでしょう。

この作品の貴重な点は、ここで初めて公開された未発表曲・バージョンが含まれていたことです。ブートレッグで聴くことができたものもありますが、さすがはオフィシャル、完璧な音質、ミックスでの収録となりました。それらは、スタジオディスクでのBefore You Accuse Me (Take a Look Yourself) Version 1とVersion 2、Alberta、Meet Me (Down at the Bottom)の4曲です。

Before You Accuse Meは、78年のアルバム「BACKLESS」レコーディング時のアウトテイクでバージョン1と2ともエレクトリックでプレイされているのですが、両者はまったくリズムアレンジが異なっています。1はリフ中心の速めのテンポ、2はシャッフルです。この曲が正式にアルバム収録されたのは、89年リリースの「JOURNEYMAN」ですから、そのはるか11年前には何とかこの曲をモノにしたいと試行錯誤していたことが分かります。実に興味深い2つのバージョンです。

Albertaは、77年のアルバム「SLOWHAND」レコーディング時のアウトテイクで、デモに近いクラプトン一人による弾き語りです。アルバムには収録されませんでしたが、その理由は、恐らくAll The Wayというアコースティックナンバーを収録したため、アコースティックナンバーの重複を避けたのではと考えられます。それでもこの曲はクラプトンのお気に入りだったようで、このアルバムのツアーでは中盤のアコースティックセットで頻繁に演奏していたことが思い出されます。きちんとスタジオ録音もしていたのですね。コードストロークでのマーティンの音色が本当に美しいです。

Meet Me (Down at the Bottom)は、74年のアルバム「461 OCEAN BOULEVARD」レコーディング時のアウトテイクです。ブートでも聴くことができましたが、ここにはそれを上回る完璧な音質で収録されました。あのアルバムのレイドバックしたムードを反映したナンバーです。

一方ライブディスクには未発表テイクはありませんが、クラプトンのキャリアにおいてこの時点でスタジオ録音が存在しなかった曲としては、 Stormy Monday、 Worried Life Blues、 Kind Hearted Woman 、Driftin’ Blues、Crossroads、 Further on Up the Roadが挙げられます。ライブにおいてクラプトンは、メモリーの引き出しから自由にこうしたナンバーを引っ張り出してきては演奏していたわけです（それは今も変わりません）。フレディ・キングの追悼コンピレーションアルバム「Freddie King 1934-1976」からのFurther on Up the Road (Convention Centre, Dallas, TX, USA 15th November1976) は、原盤では曲前に「Freddie King !」というキングを呼び出すクラプトンのコールが入っていましたが、ここにはそれをカットしたバージョンを収めている上に、「Freddie King 1934-1976」ではカット編集されていたセカンド・ギター、ジョージ・テリーのソロパートも完全収録したフルバージョンが収められています（そのため、収録時間が大幅に長くなっています）。

昔からリリースするアルバムには必ず1曲はオールドブルースを収めていたクラプトンの様々な時代での素晴らしいパフォーマンスを一気に聴くことができる秀逸なコンピレーションです。クラプトンが「FROM THE CRADLE」のリリースを受けて1994年から1995年にかけて行なった「NOTHING BUT THE BLUES TOUR」でのセットリストともほとんどダブりがないので、90年代ではなく、70年代～80年代初期の「クラプトン・ブルース」をあの時代らしい「アナログサウンド」でたっぷり楽しんでいただけるでしょう。激レアカセットバージョンのウォームなサウンドをお楽しみください。
