A treasured original master tape series by Mike Millard, a famous taper who has been released on the net by JEMS since last year and is a hot topic among rock enthusiasts. The 84th installment of the series entitled “The Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Tapes” was released on Eric Clapton’s 1974 tour, the first day of the Long Beach Arena performance on July 19th. !! On this day, both the sound board source and the audience source have already been released, but it is probable that the master of the audience source was a cassette copy after the second generation that was leaked from Mr. Millard and distributed among tape traders. The original master of Mr. Millard, who became the origin of this, has finally been released. Although it was released in a late order, this performance was the eighth early stage when Mr. Millard started recording. Therefore, the microphone is still monaural, and it may contain a cut part that seems to have changed the tape between Get Ready and Crossroads, but his recording sense that later wanted the nickname of “legendary name taper” The technique has already been demonstrated, and the quality is as good as that of later sound sources. Therefore, it was originally a source with excellent sound quality, but it is natural that the sound quality is better than the existing board if it becomes the Omoto master of First Generation. The sound image is monaural, but it is captured in a very wide sound field like the recording of Mr. Millard, and it is clear and balanced as if it were a sound board recording if there is no nearby audience noise.

昨年からJEMSによりネット上で公開され、ロックマニア間で話題沸騰、大ブームを呼んでいる名テーパー、マイク・ミラード氏による秘蔵オリジナルマスターテープシリーズ。「The Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Tapes」と題されたシリーズの第84弾としてこのたび公開されたのは、エリック・クラプトンの74年ツアー、7月19日のロングビーチ・アリーナ公演初日音源でした！この日はサウンドボードソースもオーディエンスソースも既発盤が存在しますが、オーディエンスソースのマスターは、このミラード氏から流出してテープトレーダー間で流通したセカンドジェネ以降のカセットコピーだったと考えられます。その大元となったミラード氏のオリジナルマスターが遂に公開されたというわけです。公開された順番は遅かったのですが、当公演はミラード氏が録音を始めて8つ目という初期に当たっていました。そのためマイクはまだモノラルで、Get ReadyとCrossroadsの間にテープチェンジをしたと思われるカット部分を含んでいたりしますが、後に「伝説の名テーパー」の異名をほしいままにした氏の録音センスやテクニックは既に発揮されており、後の音源にも優るとも劣らないクオリティを叶えています。従って元々音質抜群のソースでしたが、ファーストジェネの大元マスターとなれば既発盤よりも音質が良いことは当然のことでしょう。音像についてはモノラルですが、名手ミラード氏の録音らしく、非常に広がりのある音場で捉えられていて、付近のオーディエンスノイズがなければサウンドボード録音かと思うようなクリアさとバランスです。

さて、ここでこの日の公演が74年のカムバックイヤーでどのような位置づけだったのかを見ていきましょう。

本公演がこの年6月からのカムバック全米ツアーの中盤の日程であったことがお判りいただけるでしょう。この全米ツアーは、ウォームアップギグを経て、ライブステージへの自信を取り戻したクラプトンが、緊張を緩和するために酒に酔っ払って敢行したツアーでしたが、この日はMCにその影響は多少感じられるものの、総じてボーカルもきちんと取り、的確で滑らかなギタープレイを披露しています。この日のHave You Ever Loved A Womanがオフィシャルライブ盤「E.C.WAS HERE」に採用されたことが何よりの証左でしょう。セットリストが他日よりも魅力的だったことが特長で、まだこの時点ではリリースされていなかった当時のカムバック新作「461 OCEAN BOULEVARD」からのナンバーを6曲もセットインさせながら、クリーム時代のBadge、Crossroadsを交えつつ、ブラインド・フェイス時代のCan’t Find My Way Home、ドミノスナンバーTell The Truth、Laylaもきちんと押さえ、ブルースも、という具合に、ファンが聴きたかった曲をしっかり組んでいたことが魅力です。その上で、クラプトンが兼々気に入りの映画と言っていたチャーリー・チャップリンの「モダン・タイムズ」のテーマ曲Smileをオープニングに持って来るというサプライズも用意していた充実のコンサートでした。酒による酩酊度は低く、プレイが冴えていた日として、翌日の同地での公演とともに74年ツアーを代表する音源と言えるでしょう。面白いのは、Steady Rollin’ Manを2回プレイしていることです。同じ曲をまた演奏するなんて、通常のコンサートでは考えられないことですが、これは、酔っていた証拠でしょう（笑）。両方の同曲で異なるシャープなソロが聴けるところがさすがライブアーティスト、クラプトンたる所以です。同曲で二度美味しい思いができる珍しい公演でした。

【激レアセッションが実現。アンコールに元ボス、ジョン・メイオールが飛入り！】
アンコールには何と、クラプトンが65年～66年に在籍していたジョン・メイオールズ・ブルースブレイカーズのボス、ジョン・メイオールが飛入りしています。彼がクラプトンのコンサートに飛入りしたのは、この1回限りのことです。非常に貴重だと言えるでしょう。しかもロンドンではなく、ロングビーチで実現したことなのですから。メイオールはハーモニカをプレイしている上に、リードボーカルもとっています。60年代そのままのようなブルースジャムが展開されていますが、メイオールの独壇場と言えるようなパフォーマンスで、クラプトンとすれば元のボスに花を持たせたのでしょう。映像があるなら観てみたいものですが、恐らくクラプトンもメイオールも笑顔が絶えなかったのではないでしょうか。最後はお返しにメイオールがクラプトンの名を二度コールします。60年代のクラブのステージでも彼はこうしていたのではないかと想像すると、ワクワクしてきます。サウンドボード録音の既発盤にはこのアンコールは不完全収録となっていましたので、オーディエンス録音の本盤でのみ完全版が聴けます。レギュラーセットも聴きどころたっぷりで魅力的ですが、ブリティッシュブルースファンにとってはこのアンコールだけでも聴く価値があるでしょう。
