[Reprint of an extremely rare and vintage 8-track cartridge tape] Eric Clapton’s “vintage reprint project” was well received last week, so we will continue this week as well. This time, I got an 8-track cartridge tape of Clapton’s solo debut live album “E.C. Was Here” released in Italy in 1975 and in the best condition, and made it into a CD. The open reel tape version released last week was also an extremely rare format unique to 1970, but this 8-track cartridge tape was also a very rare format that was released only at that time (Japanese karaoke set at that time). The listening system for karaoke and trucks was also released in this format, both in equipment and software). Moreover, it is made in Italy, not in the United States or the United Kingdom. Since Italy was a country of car culture from that time (a cool itasha is essential to persuade women), a cassette called a cartridge was used as a slot for gachan and car stereo as a system developed for listening by car. It was developed that tape playback starts in the form of loading. However, as the structure of this format only, it was divided into four programs, so it was a rare format that the parts were divided and recorded in the song (the divided parts are faded out and in). In this work as well, there are parts that fade out and in in the songs of Presence Of The Lord, Can’t Find My Way Home, and Ramblin’On My Mind. It was a rare medium, so when I listened to it, I thought, “What?”, But I think the Italian brothers who listened while driving a car in 1975 also thought so (laughs: but women. [Amazing high sound quality] It was such a strange medium, but what cannot be underestimated is its sound quality. The specifications of the 8-track tape are that the tape itself is larger than the cassette tape, so the arrow once that can record sound information is wide, and some titles are recorded with surprisingly high sound quality. This seems to be one of them, and although it is analog, it has outstanding high-quality sound (you will not understand this unless you listen to it). Even if it is called high-quality sound, it is an analog-like high-quality sound with the depth and warmth unique to analog, which is completely different from that of CD. So this is interesting, so we decided to reprint it. As one of the topics that there was such a medium, I would like you to enjoy the analog-like and warm sound that revives that era.

[Editing and hearing different from vinyl and CD are interesting! ] It was an 8-track cartridge that was popular at that time as a unique format with high sound quality, but it disappeared in a short time as it was replaced by the car stereo of cassette tape with the times due to the bulky and unwieldy and high price of software. It was destined to end up. However, because it is a rare format unique to those days, there are even maniacs who are still the target of the collection even today. I have to say that the reason is the high sound quality (and the fun of original editing). Upon release, this board is digitized as it is recorded on the 8-track cartridge tape. As mentioned above, the original media was structurally edited at 1:42 on Track2, 0:58 on Track4, and 5:14 on Track5, so of course it was made into a CD as it is. increase. What I also noticed was that the ending of the last Further On Up The Road ended with a fade-out. This was probably due to the time adjustment in the program that was divided into four (records and CDs include the part where the band is completed).

The content is the first live album released by Clapton as a solo, and is a collection of the best takes from the tour that took place from 1974 to 1975. Track1 will perform at Long Beach on July 19, 1974, Track2, Track3, and Track4 will perform at the same location on July 20, 1974, Track5 will perform at London on December 4, 1974, and Track6 will perform on June 28, 1975. In the take of the Union Dale performance, Track 3 has adopted a version that fades out in the song due to the capacity of the LP released at the same time. This album will be released because the studio work “THERE’S ONE IN EVERY CROWD” released as the second comeback is too charted compared to the comeback work “461 OCEAN BOULE VARD” which recorded the first place in the United States. 先週のエリック・クラプトンの「ヴィンテージ復刻企画」がご好評をいただきましたため、今週も継続させていただくことになりました。今回は、75年にイタリアでリリースされたクラプトンのソロデビューライブアルバム「E.C. Was Here」の激レアかつ極上コンディションの8トラックカートリッジテープを入手し、CD化したものです。先週リリースしましたオープンリールテープバージョンも70年当時ならではの激レアなフォーマットでしたが、この8トラックカートリッジテープというのも当時だけリリースされていた、非常に珍しいフォーマットでした（当時の日本のカラオケセットやトラック用のリスニングシステムもこのフォーマットで、機材、ソフト共に発売されていました）。しかもアメリカでもイギリスでもなく、イタリア製です。当時からイタリアは車文化の国でしたので（女性を口説くにはカッコいいイタ車が必須）、車でリスニングするために開発されたシステムとして、カートリッジと呼ばれるカセットをガチャンとカーステレオの差込み口に装填する形でテープ再生が始まるというものが開発されていました。しかしこのフォーマットだけの構造として、4つのプログラムに分かれていたため、曲中でパート分かれして分断収録されているという珍しい形式でした（分断箇所はそれぞれフェイドアウト＆インしています）。本作でもPresence Of The Lord、Can’t Find My Way Home、Ramblin’ On My Mindの曲中で、フェイドアウト＆インしていく箇所があります。何とも珍しいメディアだったわけで、聴いていると、「あれぇ～？」と思いますが、75年に車を運転しながら聴いていたイタリアの兄ちゃんたちもそう思ったことでしょう（笑：しかし女性を口説くのに必死で、そんなことはどうでもよかったのかも）。

【驚異の高音質】
そんな変わったメディアでしたが、侮れないのは、その音質です。8トラックテープの仕様は、テープ自体がカセットテープよりも大きいせいで音情報を記録できるアロウワンスが広いためか、タイトルによっては驚きの高音質で収録されているものがあります。これもその一つと思われ、アナログでありながら、抜群の高音質なのです（これは聴いてみてもらわないと分かっていただけないでしょう）。高音質と申しましても、CDのそれとはまったく異質な、アナログならではの深みと温かみのあるアナログチックな高音質なのです。そこでこれは面白い、ということで復刻リリースすることとなりました。こんなメディアもあったんだ、という話題の一つとして、あの時代を甦らせるアナログチックでウォームなサウンドを是非味わっていただければと思います。

【レコード盤、CDとは異なる編集と聞こえ方が逆に面白い！】
高音質な独自フォーマットとして、当時は普及した8トラックカートリッジでしたが、嵩が大きく扱いにくい、ソフトが高価格等の事情で時代とともにカセットテープのカーステレオに取って代わられ、短期で姿を消してしまう運命となりました。しかし、当時ならではの珍しいフォーマットということで、現代でもコレクションの対象としているマニアがいるほどです。その理由は、やはりその高音質にあると言わざるを得ません（それと、独自編集の面白さもあるかも）。リリースに当たり、本盤では8トラックカートリッジテープに収録されているそのままの状態でデジタル化しています。前述しましたように、元メディアでは構造上Track2の1:42時点、Track4の0:58時点、Track5の5:14時点でフェイドアウト、フェイドインの編集がなされていましたので、もちろんそのままCD化しています。さらに気づいたのは、ラストのFurther On Up The Roadのエンディングがフェイドアウトで終わっていたことです。これも4つに分けられていたプログラムでの時間合わせゆえの措置だったのでしょう（レコードやCDでは、バンドが完奏する部分まで収められています）。

【E.C. WAS HERE 総括】

内容は、クラプトンがソロとして初めてリリースしたライブ盤で、74年～75年にかけて行なったツアーからのベストテイクを集めたものです。Track1は74年7月19日のロングビーチ公演、 Track2、Track3、Track4は翌7月20日の同地公演、Track5は74年12月4日のロンドン公演、Track6は75年6月28日のユニオンデイル公演のテイクで、Track3は同時リリースされたLPのキャパシティの都合上、曲中でフェイドアウトするバージョンが採用されています。 このアルバムがリリースされることになったのは、カムバック第二弾としてリリースしたスタジオ作「THERE’S ONE IN EVERY CROWD」が、全米第一位を記録したカムバック作「461 OCEAN BOULEVARD」に比べ、あまりにチャートアクションが悪かったため、急遽クラプトンのギタープレイが目立つ、たっぷりギターが聴けるライブテイクでファンの期待に応えようとしたためです（現在ではそんな「THERE’S ONE IN EVERY CROWD」も隠れた名盤との評価を得ていますが）。Track3のDriftin’ Bluesは、CDではフェイドアウトのない完奏バージョンが収録されましたが、それを聴けば、フェイドアウト後にクラプトンがエレクトリックに持ち替え、スライドでプレイしたことが分かります。しかしながら、率直に申し上げて、このスライドプレイがイマイチ。むしろクラプトンがアコースティックで抜群のプレイをしているパートで切った、リリース当初のレコード会社の判断を善しとしたいところです（サイドギターのジョージ・テリーのソロ中にオーディエンスが湧き上がるのは、クラプトンがエレクトリックに持ち替えた瞬間です）。レコード会社の思惑どおり、本作は全米20位とまずまずの成績を収めました。当時のイタリアでは、クラプトンはツアーを行なわなかったので、イタリアのファンはこのライブアルバムでクラプトンの復活振りを知るしか方法はなかったわけです。そんなイタリアでリリースされていた激レア＆ヴィンテージな8トラックカートリッジ。是非この機会に、あの時代のウォームでアナログチックなサウンドでクラプトンのファーストソロライブを鑑賞していただければと思います。
