キャリアの中では今でも評価の高いエリック・クラプトン1990年「ジャーニーマン・ジャパン・ツアー」から、最終日となった12月11日の横浜アリーナ公演を極上のステレオ・オーディエンス録音で完全収録し、2012年5月にリリースされたのが「TERMINAL PORT(2CD)」でした。当時、1990年ジャパン・ツアーからの超高音質タイトル「DEFINITION OF LEGACY」「GOLD FLAVOR」「JOURNEY OF FAITH」「PRINCIPLE OF GOD」等数々の名盤をモノにした録音者のオリジナルマスターからリリースしたもので、90年ツアー最終横浜公演の一大決定版として人気を博し、完売したタイトルです。今回、この極上マスターをかのGraf Zeppelinがリマスターしてくれました！元より極上だったマスターの、微妙だった位相を完璧に修正、さらに音量を調整して、歪まない範囲で持ち上げての迫力アップ。その結果、極上のその上をいくレベルまで引き上げられることとなりました。このツアーのドラマーだったスティーヴ・フェローン(クラプトンは「フェローニ」と発音しますが)の特徴的な「バシャッ」というスネアのサウンドが忠実に収録されており、当日の会場ではまさにこのバンド・サウンドで聴こえていたと言えるリアルな音像になっています。すべての既発盤では音がボケていたオープニングのPretendingイントロでのスネア５連打の音を聴けば、それは明白です。録音上のトラブルは皆無で、テープチェンジによる欠落も一切なく、耳障りなオーディエンス・ノイズも全くないことが奇跡的とも言えます。

この公演は、ジャパン・ツアーの最終日という意味合いに留まらず、１月から開始した「ジャーニーマン・ツアー」そのものの千秋楽でもありました。それではここで1990年の「ジャーニーマン・ツアー」を含むクラプトンの活動履歴を振り返ってみましょう。

これを見ると、文字通りのワールドツアーに明け暮れた年だったことがお分かりいただけるでしょう。日本に辿り着くまでにRAHでの18夜連続公演でイギリスの興行記録を打ち立てたり（翌年には24 Nightsでさらに記録更新）、８月の全米ツアーでは一緒に回った盟友スティーヴィー・レイ・ヴォーンを不慮の事故で亡くしたりと、波乱万丈の一年でした。クラプトン自身も最後までツアーを完遂できたことが、非常に感慨深かったようで、クラプトンの気合が入らないわけがありませんでした。オープニングから飛ばし捲っています。１曲目の終了後にはバンド・メンバー、ツアー・スタッフ、ウドー音楽事務所の全員の名をコールして感謝の挨拶をしているという貴重なシーンが収められています(その気持ちを表すかのように、Cocaineではファースト・ソロをフィル・パーマーに、セカンド・ソロをグレッグ・フィリンゲインズに譲って花を持たせており、クラプトンのソロがない珍しいテイクとなっています。またこのグレッグのソロでは、Laylaのフレーズが散りばめられているのも一興です)。彼らに捧げると明言した公演だけに、クラプトンのプレイ・クオリティは本ツアーでも抜きん出たものとなっています。セットリストには当時の最新アルバム「JOURNEYMAN」からのナンバーが6曲も組まれており、あの名盤の楽曲のライブ映えするバージョンをたっぷり鑑賞することができます。セット中でも感極まらんばかりの怒涛のソロが聴けるのがI Shot The Sheriffの後奏です。本当に凄いの一語に尽きる、凄まじい至高の弾き捲りが詰まっています。このライブテイクを、クラプトンの長いキャリア上でもベストと推すプロギタリストも多いほどです。また、新年間近を意識しての「蛍の光」がLaylaの前奏曲としてプレイされているという珍しいシーンもあります。これは日本のファンに向けて、無事に新年を迎えてくれることを願っての特別サービスだったと言えるでしょう(イギリスでは、別れの曲ではなく、新年の多幸を祈念して歌われる曲です)。既に音源的には出回っているものの、このアップグレード極上音質で改めて聴いてみるだけの価値があるジャーニーマン・ツアー最終公演。ラストのネイザン・イーストによる「オツカレサマデシタ！」のMCまでも完全収録した最高クオリティのマスターだけに、プレスCDでの限定リリースとなっています。この機会をどうぞお見逃しなきようお願いします。
【クラプトンが自ら「世界最高のバンド」と称えた、このツアーのみのサポートミュージシャンたち】
このツアーをここまでクオリティの高いものにしたのは、実力のあるバンドメンバーに負うところが大きかったと言えます。ベースのネイザン・イースト（現在もクラプトンの良き相棒です）、キーボードのグレッグ・フィリンゲインズ、ドラムのスティーヴ・フェローン、コーラスのテッサ・ナイルズ＆ケイティ・キスーン（彼女も現在のバンドに在籍していますね）は86年の「AUGUST」以来の信頼関係にあるメンバーで、クラプトンとの呼吸を知り尽くした人たち。セカンドギターのフィル・パーマーは89年からバンドに加わったセッションマン上がりの実力派のプレイヤーでした。決して「七光り」ではありませんが、キンクスのデイヴィス兄弟の甥に当たる人で、まったくミストーンのない的確で器用なプレイぶりは大いにクラプトンをフォローしていました。クラプトンにスカウトされたきっかけは、86年のイギリスのシンガーソングライター、ポール・ブレイディのアルバムセッションで出会い、88年のプロデューサー兼アーティストのジョン・アストリーのアルバムセッションで再会したことだったようです（彼はこのツアー後、ダイア―・ストレイツに引き抜かれました）。因みにBadgeキーボードのでは担当したセカンドソロの前半で、クリームのオリジナルバージョンのクラプトンのソロを完コピしています（クラプトンはパーマーにとってもギターの師だったのでしょう）。この機会に改めて「世界最高のバンド」を本作でご確認ください。
