The second release from the first generation DAT master provided by the heavyweight taper living in England, familiar with Eric Clapton’s treasured sound source, was held on December 31, 2005 at the community center of Woking, a rural town in Surrey, Clapton’s hometown. It is a complete recording of the best stereo audience source of the charity concert. This concert was a charity event for AA (Alcoholics Anonymous Association) titled “New Year’s Eve Dance” that has been held every year since 1993. Originally, in 1982, Clapton, who participated in the “year-old live” held at a local pub by Gary Brooker, a band member at the time, liked this idea, and has been performed intermittently at the end of the year since then. What has been done became a regular event sponsored by Clapton in 1993, and has been established as “New Year’s Eve Dance”, which performs live twice on New Year’s Eve and on New Year’s morning with a break. The heavyweight taper has successfully infiltrated using the usual connection, and has succeeded in stereo recording with the finest sound quality with advanced equipment for many years. The sound image of the master of the heavyweight taper this time is unusual. The best sound quality as usual is the same, but it is a unique stereo separate in which the drums, bass, and Clapton’s guitar are phased slightly to the left, and the vocals and keyboard are phased slightly to the right. It is speculated that the recording seat was probably slightly right in front of the front row of the stage. The drums, bass, and Clapton’s guitar were played live from the amplifier, and the vocals and keyboard were through the right P.A. speaker. As a result, the vocals are somewhat distant. It seems that such a unique sound image was created for a rural community center where no P.A. speakers were installed in the center of the stage. It is recorded with a highly directional microphone, so you can fully enjoy this stereo feeling. I’m especially happy that Clapton’s guitar is ringing. It is exactly the best sound quality. This event has a reputation for being rare only at this time with members and set lists, and it can be said that it is a maniac coveted for a concert that general fans cannot enter. In the first part, Brooker took vocals and Ooh Poo Pah Doo, where you can enjoy call and response with the audience, was a rare performance song that was not common. Clapton’s play is a word of “solid”, but when it comes to the second part, the aspect changes. Clapton’s tension reaches MAX and it is played with full throttle. At the beginning of In the Midnight Hour, you can enjoy luxurious play, such as the first solo using the wah pedal, which was not in the past, and the second solo without wah. The wah solo in this song is rare, and when I listen to it, I still realize the good sense of Clapton’s wah play. The phrase also has a singing spirit, and the timing of stepping on the wah is exquisite. This year, it can be said that this wah play was outstanding, and it is rare to play wah even in the middle solo of A Whiter Shade of Pale. This is rare! Moreover, this solo is also wonderful, and after this solo, I will put in an exquisite obligato all the time while stepping on the wah. It’s a regular masterpiece that I play every year, but this take is also hard to throw away! After playing, Brooker unexpectedly calls Clapton’s name in honor of this wonderful play. And so is Cocaine. Wah’s solo is unbearable even in this song. Clapton’s wow play is really good. Furthermore, play in Five Long Years. It’s a tremendous tension that you can’t help but knock down. What happened to Clapton in the second part? That’s what it feels like. Stormy Monday is also amazing, and this work is worth it just by listening to this second part.
A heavyweight taper that has provided masters of many rare Clapton sound sources so far, but the master of this work has the best sound quality among the five fingers. It is wonderful to capture the sound resounding in a narrow box like a community center in the countryside in a good position. From BGM to the opening announcement, the countdown to welcome the New Year, and the chorus of “Hotaru no Hikari” to celebrate the New Year, the whole story is recorded without omission. When I listen to this work, I sincerely think that I wanted to experience this warm and gorgeous concert at least once. I am grateful to the stalwart taper who delivered such a concert that Japanese people could not go to see with such reality. エリック・クラプトンの秘蔵音源でお馴染みの、イギリス在住重鎮テーパー提供のファーストジェネレーションDATマスターからの2作めのリリースは、2005年12月31日にクラプトンの故郷サリー州の田舎町ウォーキングの公民館で行なわれたチャリティコンサートの完全収録極上ステレオ・オーディエンスソースです。このコンサートは、1993年以降毎年実施されてきた「ニュー・イヤーズ・イヴ・ダンス」と題されたAA（アルコール中毒者匿名の会）向けのチャリティイベントでした。元々は82年に、当時バンドメンバーだったゲイリー・ブルッカーが地元のパブで開いた「年忘れライブ」に参加したクラプトンがこの趣向を気に入ったことに端を発し、以降も断続的に年末に行なわれてきたものが93年にクラプトン主催で定例化し、大晦日の夜と休憩を挟んだ新年の朝に二度ライブを行なう「ニュー・イヤーズ・イヴ・ダンス」として定着したものです。洒落心から、毎回匿名性とユーモア性の高いバンド名が付けられるのが恒例にもなっており、この年は「SELF DENIAL」（自己否定）でした（そんなに卑下しなくても、あなたたちは一流ですよ）。このイベントではいつも招集されるイギリス人ミュージシャンで固められており、この年はアンディ・フェアウェザー・ロウが不参加で、5人のレギュラーメンバーでした。このコンサートは、クラプトンが会員にもなっているアルコール中毒匿名の会の会員とその家族を無料で招待して楽しませるというもので、一般のファンは観られないというのが建て前になっていました。ところが何事にも裏があるのがこの世の中。重鎮テーパーは普段のコネクションを利用して見事に潜入し、多年に亘り上級機材による極上音質でのステレオ録音に成功したというわけです。今回の重鎮テーパーのマスターの音像は一風変わっています。例年どおりの極上音質は同じなのですが、ドラム、ベース、そしてクラプトンのギターがやや左に位相しており、ボーカルとキーボードがやや右に位相しているという、ユニークなステレオセパレートなのです。恐らく録音席がステージの最前列正面やや右寄りだったのでしゃないかと推測されます。ドラム、ベース、クラプトンのギターはアンプからの生音、ボーカルとキーボードは右のP.A.スピーカー通しだったのではないでしょうか。そのためボーカルはやや遠い感じです。ステージセンターにP.A.スピーカーが設置していない田舎の公民館につき、こうした独特の音像になったと思われます。指向性の高いマイクで録音されていますので、このステレオ感を十分に楽しんでいただけます。特にクラプトンのギターがギンギン鳴っているのが嬉しいところです。まさに極上音質です。このイベントはメンバーとセットリストがこの時だけのレアなことで定評があり、しかも一般のファンは入場できないコンサートとあってはマニア垂涎の的と言えるものなのです。それをファーストジェネレーションの極上DATマスターから聴ける。これは凄いことなのです。さて、ここでこのコンサートが行なわれた2005年がクラプトンにとってどのような意味合いを持っていたのかをおさらいしてみましょう。

自身のツアーはありませんでしたが、数々のチャリティイベントに出演し、クリームの再結成コンサートを米英で実現するなど、この年も前年に続き非常に精力的に活動した一年だったことがお判りいただけるでしょう。今回同時リリースの「Woking 2004」とはセットリストも異なり、毎年恒例のイベントながら、クラプトンも工夫を凝らしていたことが分かります。特にこの年はアンディがいませんでしたので、ギターのクラプトンとオルガンのブルッカーのツートップ体制が際立っていました。第一部では、ブルッカーがボーカルをとり、オーディエンスとのコール＆レスポンスが楽しめるOoh Poo Pah Dooが例年にないレアな演奏曲でした。クラプトンのプレイは「手堅い」の一言ですが、第二部になると、様相が変わります。クラプトンのテンションがMAXに達し、フルスロットルで弾き捲るのです。初っ端のIn the Midnight Hourでは、例年になかったワウペダルを駆使してのファーストソロ、ワウなしのセカンドソロ、と、贅沢なプレイが楽しめます。この曲でのワウソロは珍しく、これを聴くと、やはりクラプトンのワウプレイのセンスの良さを実感します。フレーズにも歌心がありますし、ワウを踏むタイミングが絶妙です。この年は、このワウプレイが際立っていたと言え、A Whiter Shade of Paleの中間のソロでも珍しくワウでプレイしているのです。これはレアです！しかもこのソロがまた素晴らしい上に、このソロ以降、ワウを踏みながらずっと絶妙なオブリガートを入れるのです。毎年演奏しているレギュラーな名曲ですが、このテイクも捨て難いです！演奏後には、この素晴らしいプレイを称えて、思わずブルッカーがクラプトンの名をコールしています。そしてCocaineも、です。この曲でもワウのソロが堪りません。本当にクラプトンのワウプレイは上手いです。さらにはFive Long Yearsでのプレイ。もう弾き倒しというしかないほどの物凄いテンションです。第二部のクラプトン、どうしちゃったの？て感じです。Stormy Mondayも凄いですし、この第二部を聴いていただくだけでも本作は価値ありです。
