This work was shot at “March 17, 2002 St. Petersburg Performance”. That multi-camera pro shot. Don Airey joined with the departure of Jon Lord, but the alternation is a little complicated. In order to confirm the situation in that area, let’s first look back on the schedule at that time.

This is 2001/2002 DEEP PURPLE. In 2000, he released a replay of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, but after that he returned to the days of touring. However, at the end of the US tour, Jon Lord’s knee broke down. We are welcoming Don Airey for support. Don stopped supporting for a while, but about half a year later, in March 2002, John announced that he would leave Purple. Don joined as an official keyboard player. Their first job, when the current lineup was completed in this way, was a mini tour in Eastern Europe. The St. Petersburg performance of this work is the first day.
This work recorded at such a historic show is a vivid and beautiful professional shot. The sound like a microphone recording and the rough camera work ooze the Russian character that was a rock developing country at that time, but the master freshness is amazing. Almost no dubbing marks or tape twists are seen, and the color is super vivid. There are scenes where the color is too strong and the color bleeds, but it is wonderful because the details are not crushed. Each one of Don’s hair and the sharp biceps of Mose are also vivid, and at the top of Giran, you can even see the beard that is about to grow. If the image quality is so good, even the potato-like camera work will make you feel the handmade feeling.

Similarly, “The Aviator” is up to 2002, and there are a lot of old and new precious songs.

そんな本作が撮影されたのは「2002年３月17日サンクトペテルブルク公演」。そのマルチカメラ・プロショットです。ジョン・ロードの離脱に伴ってドン・エイリーが加入したわけですが、その交代劇はやや複雑。その辺の状況を確かめる意味でも、まずは当時のスケジュールから振り返ってみましょう。

これが2001年／2002年のDEEP PURPLE。2000年にはロイヤル・フィル・ハーモニック再演作品をリリースしましたが、その後はツアー三昧の日々に回帰しました。ところが全米ツアーを終えたところでジョン・ロードの膝に故障が発生。ドン・エイリーをサポートに迎えることになりました。しばらくドンはサポート止まりだったのですが、約半年後の2002年３月、ジョンがパープルから離脱を表明。ドンが正式なキーボーディストとして加入したわけです。こうして現行ラインナップが完成した彼らの初仕事は、東欧でのミニ・ツアー。本作のサンクトペテルブルク公演こそがその初日なのです。
そんな歴史的なショウで記録された本作は、ビビッドに美しいプロショット。マイク録音のような音色やざっくりしたカメラワークに当時ロック発展途上国だったロシアらしさが滲むのですが、マスター鮮度は驚異的。ダビング痕やテープヨレがほとんど見られず、発色も超ビビッド。あまりに発色が強くて色滲みするシーンもなくはないものの、それでディテールが潰れないから素晴らしい。ドンの髪の毛の１本１本やモーズのバッキバキにキレた上腕二頭筋も鮮やかですし、ギランの最アップでは生えかけのヒゲまで見える。ここまで画質が良いと、イモっぽいカメラワークさえも手作り感が愛おしく感じられてくるほどです。
その映像美で描かれるのは、レアな復活クラシックスもたっぷりのフルショウ。2002年の映像と言えば公式作『LIVE AT THE NEC』も有名ですが、本作のセットは似て非なるもの。ここで比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『LIVE AT THE NEC』とは違ってジョンのゲスト参加はありませんが、セットはさらに美味しい。今となってはお馴染み感もある「When A Blind Man Cries」だけでなく「No One Came」「Mary Long」と美味しいナンバーが大盤振る舞い。特に「Fools」は2000年の日本公演で初披露されたことも思い出深いところですが、演奏されたのは2002年までの限定曲。同じく「The Aviator」も2002年までですし、新旧の貴重曲が目白押しなのです。
かつてDEEP PURPLEと言えばメンバーチェンジの多いバンドの代表格でしたが、その歴史は本作を持って終わりました。その後20年にわたって誰ひとり代わることのなかった“歴代最長の５人”。その最初の夜をマルチカメラ・プロショットで楽しめる１枚。どうぞ、じっくりとご堪能ください。
