DEEP PUEPLE has many professional shot images from the ’70s (regardless of official or collector’s items), and the state of live performances and stages is well known. Among the various remaining images, the most unique and impressive one is the image material called “Leeds Polytechnic Project” among overseas enthusiasts.
In this work “LONDON 1974”, the “Leeds Polytechnic Project” has been made into a DVD with a high image quality that is incomparable to its predecessor. A must-see for all PURPLE fans!

This video is a video work with the theme of DEEP PURPLE, produced in 1974 by students at the University of Leeds in the UK as part of a “college project”. It consists mainly of a total of 40 minutes of live performances at the London “Hammersmith Odeon” performance on May 9, 1974 and backstage coverage of the London “Lewisham Odeon” performance on May 12.
The content begins with the live performance of “Burn”, interviews with four members (interviews in separate rooms only for Richie), Jon Lord’s organ solo (including “2001 theme”), and “Space Truckin ‘” The intro part, John’s interview, and finally Richie’s guitar solo part in the second half of “Space Truckin ‘”. This video, which allows you to enjoy the ’74 London performance with a high-quality (at that time) professional shot, has been a very famous video material among enthusiasts for a long time, and has appeared in a wide variety of forms since the VTR era.
In this work, the Umatic Master, which has appeared in recent years, is directly used, and the quality is undoubtedly the highest in the past. The slightly reddish film-like screen makes you feel the times, but the clear image quality and solid sound quality that surpasses all previous releases (I can’t believe it was made by a student) is worth seeing. Not only the performance but also the interview is very valuable, and it is a level that seems possible even for TV broadcasting and recording on the official board. If you are a fan interested in PURPLE, I assure you that this is a must-see and must-have book!

“Burn”, which was captured in full-length from the intro, was filmed using various camera angles, so you can enjoy it just like an official. Ritchie, whose rear view was the center in California Jam, also shot from the front firmly in the texture part.
There is a lot of action, and stage effects such as lighting and smoke create the best atmosphere of a live stage. Of course, not only Richie, but also Coverdale who sings enthusiastically and Glenn who moves vertically and horizontally can be seen perfectly. Not to mention the presence of John and Pace. It is a big point that the state of the audience is also photographed vividly, and you can also check the audience who enter the performance like a trance state, and the fans who are taken away by security because they are too lazy. At the same time as being excellent as a live video, the students who tried to convey rock as a “new culture” and “a reflection of the times” from the video that splendidly captured the enthusiasm of the early ’70s live. Following “Burn” was an interview with four people other than Richie and a scene in the dressing room. In this backstage scene, you can see the (still fresh!) expression of Coverdale, who has just joined the band, John, who leads the members with remarks like an elder, and Glenn, who is already imposing. Here, it is also worth noting that Richie’s guitar solo and guitar crash patterns are used (of course in pro shots) according to the members’ remarks.
Then we move on to an individual interview with Richie. In response to the interviewer’s question, Richie who speaks unexpectedly fluently and smilingly is very rare. From the content of the conversation, you can’t miss the scene where the office of “Purple Record”, which is decorated with gold discs, appears.

“Space Truckin'” will begin after the four interviews are over. From John’s keyboard solo featuring “Also Sprach Zarathustra” (Zarathustra speaks this way), the scene where the dramatic intro is led, you can enjoy plenty of entanglement between John and Glenn. It’s a pity to return to the interview when the guitar is in and the main part of the song is finally here! The second half of “Space Truckin'” with an interview with John is also captured mainly by John, and you can see the last climax scene. At the end, an interview voice is inserted against the background of the audience going crazy with the excitement of the live, and the 40-minute video concludes.

It goes without saying that the performance scenes and interviews are valuable, but as mentioned above, this video is unique in that it treats DEEP PURPLE’s live performances and the audience who enjoy them as a “new culture” and a “reflection of the times.” If it was just the live performance at this time, the official video containing “California Jam” would be enough, but with the uniqueness of such a unique perspective, this video still has a high value. .

DEEP PUEPLEは’70年代から（公式やコレクターズ・アイテム問わず）多くのプロショット映像が残されており、ライヴやステージの様子は詳しく知られています。その各種残された映像の中でも特に個性的で印象深いものといえば、海外マニアの間で”Leeds Polytechnic Project”と呼ばれる映像素材でしょう。
本作「LONDON 1974」では、その”Leeds Polytechnic Project”を、既発とは比較にならない高画質でDVD化したもの。第三期PURPLEのリアルな姿を、ライヴとバックステージ、そしてインタビュー（全文をプリントアウトしたインサート付き）で収めた、全てのPURPLEファン必見の貴重映像です！

この映像は1974年に英国リーズ大学の学生が”カレッジ・プロジェクト”の一環として製作した、DEEP PURPLEをテーマにした映像作品。主に’74年5月9日のロンドン”ハマースミス・オデオン”公演におけるライヴ演奏と、5月12日のロンドン”ルウィシャム・オデオン”公演のバックステージにおける取材の、合計40分間から成り立っています。
内容は「Burn」のライヴ演奏に始まり、4人のメンバーに対するインタビュー（リッチーのみ個別の部屋でのインタビュー）、ジョン・ロードのオルガンソロ（”2001年のテーマ”含む）、そして「Space Truckin’」のイントロ部分、ジョンのインタビュー、最後に「Space Truckin’」後半におけるリッチーのギターソロ・パート、という構成。’74年のロンドン公演を（当時としては）高いクオリティのプロショットで楽しめる本映像は、以前からマニアの間では非常に有名な映像素材で、VTR時代から多種多様な形で登場してきました。
本作では近年登場したユーマチック・マスターをダイレクト使用し、間違いなく過去最上級と断言できるクオリティでのDVD化。少々赤茶けたフィルムらしい画面は時代を感じさせますが、あらゆる既発を凌ぐ鮮明な画質としっかりした音質は（製作が学生とは思えない）プロ級の見応え。演奏はもちろんインタビューも大変貴重で、テレビ放送やオフィシャル盤への収録すら可能と思える水準です。PURPLEに興味のあるファンならば、必見・必携の一本と断言します！

イントロからフルレンスで捉えられた｢Burn｣は、様々なカメラ・アングルを駆使して撮影されており、オフィシャルさながらに楽しむことができます。カリフォルニア・ジャムでは後姿が中心だったリッチーも、キメの部分はしっかりと正面からのショット。
アクションも多く、照明やスモークなどの舞台効果も、ライヴ・ステージらしい雰囲気を最高に演出しています。もちろんリッチーだけでなく、熱唱するカヴァデールやステージを縦横に動くグレンもばっちり観られます。ジョンやペイスの存在感は言うまでもありません。オーディエンスの様子も生々しく撮影されているのが大きなポイントで、トランス状態のように演奏へ入り込む観客、ノリすぎてセキュリティに連れ去られるファンも確認出来ます。ライヴ映像として優れていると同時に、このような’70年代前半のライヴらしい熱気を見事に切り取った映像からは、ロックを「新しい文化」や「時代の反映」として捉え発信しようとした、学生たちの熱い意気込みを感じます。

「Burn」に続いてはリッチー以外4人のインタビューと楽屋のワンシーン。このバックステージ・シーンでは、バンド加入後間もないカヴァデールの（まだ初々しい！）表情や、年長者らしく発言でメンバーをリードするジョン、すでに堂々としたグレンの姿が見られます。ここではメンバーの発言に合わせて、リッチーのギターソロやギタークラッシュの模様が（もちろんプロショットで）用いられている点にも注目です。
そしてリッチーへの個別インタビューへと移ります。インタビュアーの質問に対し、意外なくらい饒舌に、にこやかに話すリッチーは非常に珍しいでしょう。会話の内容から、ずらりとゴールド・ディスクが飾られた”Purple Record”のオフィス風景が出てくる場面も見逃がせません。

4人のインタビューが終わった後、｢Space Truckin’｣が始まります。「Also Sprach Zarathustra」（ツァラトゥストゥラはかく語りき）をフィーチャーしたジョンのキーボードソロから、ドラマティックなイントロが導かれる場面は、ジョンとグレンの絡みも見応えたっぷりに楽しめます。ギターが入っていよいよ曲本編、と言う所でインタビューに戻ってしまうのが惜しい！　ジョンへのインタビューを挟んでの「Space Truckin’」後半もジョンがメインに捉えられており、ラストのクライマックス・シーンを見る事が出来ます。最後はライヴの盛り上がりに狂乱する観客の様子をバックにインタビュー音声がインサートされ、40分の映像は締めくくられます。

演奏シーンとインタビューの貴重さは言うまでもありませんが、前述したように本映像は、DEEP PURPLEのライヴとそれを楽しむ観客を「新しい文化」そして「時代の反映」として扱っている点がユニーク。この時期のライヴだけなら”カリフォルニア・ジャム”を収めた公式映像で足りてしまうでしょうが、こういった独自の視点という個性が入る事で、本映像は今もなお高い価値を持っているのです。

Taken from first generation copy of the original U-Matic Master. 40 minutes from the Hammersmith Odeon in 1974 which has live footage & backstage interviews, done as a media project by students at Leeds University(“Leeds Polytechnic Project”). Some of the interviews were taken from the backstage of Lewisham Odeon, London on 12th May 1974.
