David Lindley passed away on March 3, 2023. He was 78 years old. The exact cause of his death has not been made public, but he has been reporting pneumonia and kidney disease for several months. It seems that the obituary was in the middle of a call for donations for his medical expenses. Currently, images of the past are attracting attention as if they were reminiscent of Lindley. Among them, the best master appears as a masterpiece video that represents his early solo.
This work was filmed at “The Lorelei on August 28, 1982”. It is a multi-camera pro shot when appearing on the West German specialty program “ROCKPALAST”. “EL RAYO LIVE” was produced from the live scene in 1982, but first, let’s look back on the schedule at that time and check the positional relationship of each.

This is the 1982 schedule. In fact, there are some ambiguous points in the records at that time, and the above extracts only the solo performances. Please consider it as a reference only to see the positional relationship with “EL RAYO LIVE”. The traditional official work was recorded in June/December, and the “ROCKPALAST” appearance of this work was in August in between. The members are Jorge Calderon, Bernie Larsen, and Ian Wallace (also familiar with KING CRIMSON).
“This work, which conveys such a stage, is a superb product.” As expected, the analog feeling at the time of shooting cannot be erased, so in the modern age of digital greatness, I wonder if it is okay to assert that it is “completely official!” After all, the master freshness is tremendous, there are no dubbing marks or twists, and the fine details and vivid colors are as they were at the time. That’s enough to make me think, “Maybe it’s an official laser disc?” (Actually, there is no official LD).
What is depicted in such visual beauty is the brave figure of Lindley in the 1980s, who built her own world as a solo artist. I mentioned “EL RAYO LIVE” earlier, but “ROCKPALAST”, which has a frame of about 90 minutes, is much longer than the traditional version and has a lot of famous songs. Let’s organize the set while comparing here so that you can feel the volume of the number of songs.

… and it looks like this. A large-scale performance of 6 songs each from the two early works “EL RAYO-X” and “WIN THIS RECORD!”. There is no “Wooly Bully”, but all other “EL RAYO LIVE” numbers will be shown. Moreover, the performance is enhanced with stage tension and dynamism. It may be better to say “extended version” or “development type” rather than “video version EL RAYO LIVE”.
That’s the same as “EL RAYO-X” and “WIN THIS RECORD!”… no, it’s a video masterpiece that symbolizes David Lindley’s early solo career. And if you experienced the performance in Japan in 1983, one piece that will bring back the scene at that time. Please take this opportunity to savor it carefully.

2023年３月３日、デヴィッド・リンドレー永眠。享年78歳でした。詳しい死因は公表されていませんが、数ヶ月前から肺炎や腎疾患も報道。治療費のための募金が呼びかけられている最中の訃報だったようです。現在、そんなリンドレーを偲ぶかのように在りし日の映像が話題を集めている。その中でも初期ソロを代表する名作映像がベスト・マスターが登場です。
そんな本作が撮影されたのは「1982年８月28日ザローレライ」。西ドイツの名物番組“ROCKPALAST”に出演した際のマルチカメラ・プロショットです。1982年のライヴ現場からは『EL RAYO LIVE』が製作されたわけですが、まずは、当時のスケジュールを振り返り、それぞれの位置関係を確かめてみましょう。

これが1982年のスケジュール。実のところ当時の記録には曖昧な点もあり、上記ではソロ公演のみを抽出してもいる。あくまで『EL RAYO LIVE』との位置関係だけを見るための参考とお考えください。伝統の公式作はが録音されたのは６月／12月であり、本作の“ROCKPALAST”出演はその合間の８月。メンバーも同じホルヘ・カルデロン、バーニー・ラーセン、そして（KING CRIMSONでもお馴染みの）イアン・ウォーレスです。
そんなステージを伝える本作は、極上の銘品。さすがに撮影当時のアナログ感は拭えないのでデジタル大全盛の現代だと「完全オフィシャル級！」と断言して良いか迷いますが、当時基準であれば全力で吠えてもいい。何しろマスター鮮度が絶大でしてダビング痕やヨレは一切なく、細やかなディテールも鮮やかな発色も当時そのまま。それこそ「もしかして公式レーザーディスク起こし？」と思ってしまうほどです（実際には公式LDは存在しません）。
そんな映像美で画かれるのは、ソロとしても独自の世界を築いていった80年代リンドレーの勇姿。先ほどから『EL RAYO LIVE』を引き合いに出しておりますが、約90分枠の“ROCKPALAST”は伝統盤よりも遙かに長尺で名曲も山盛り。その曲数ボリュームを実感していただくためにも、ここで比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

それこそ『EL RAYO-X』『WIN THIS RECORD!』と同等……いや、それ以上に重要なデヴィッド・リンドレーのソロ初期を象徴する映像傑作です。そして、もし1983年の来日公演を体験された方なら当時の光景が見事に蘇ってくるであろう１枚。どうぞ、この機会にじっくりと噛みしめてください。
