そうまでして差し替えた、新マスター。これがもう本当に素晴らしい。実のところ、楽音自体は『STUTTGART 2016』と酷似した美麗サウンドで、無理を押し通すほど異なってはいない。しかし、そのサウンドの旨みを伝える空気の透明度が違うのです。“芯の太さ”・“エッジの美しさ”・“分離の鮮やかさ”等々は当たり前の次元なので省きますが、その艶やかトーンが野外会場の虚空に消えゆく儚さまでもが克明に描かれている録音なのです。特にその印象を際立たせているのは、オーディエンス・ノイズ。『STUTTGART 2016』も本作も、観客の声や唱和、喝采も拾っています。しかし、本作はその声や喝采のバランス、タイミングまでもが美しいのです。どちらもPINK FLOYDでは感動的な大合唱が起きるわけですが、本作はそんな唱和以外のシーンが異様に静か。例えば、「The Great Gig in the Sky」。コーラスが美しく幻想の世界を描き出すのですが、『STUTTGART 2016』では、その響きの中に小さいながらも観客の会話も混じっていた。ところが、本作の観客たちは息を飲んで見守り、重なり合う声の一筋までもが鮮やかで、その声が虚空に消えていく美しさまで胸に染み入るのです。それでいて、観客の存在感がないわけでもない。要所要所で贈られる喝采のタイミングが“いかにも音楽に没入していた”ことを物語っており、それだけに沈黙に代わると“息を飲む”ムードを醸し出す。これが一層の幻想感を引き立てているのです。かつて、ロバート・フリップが何も叩かなかったビル・ブルーフォードに対して「演奏しないことで曲に貢献した」と作曲クレジットしたことがありましが、本作の観客もまた“音楽的に”賞賛に値する沈黙なのです。
