The “Two Of Us” team, who has been unearthing the first appearance audience of the American leg that Bowie would have put the most effort into since the 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour, has delivered 7 this time. Madison Square Garden on the 25th of March. The team has released the Philadelphia performance that was held before MSG so far, but it seems that it is finally a real hit.
In the first place, the American leg of the Serious Moonlight Tour released by the UX BRIDGE label seems to have been concentrated in Detroit in July, LA Forum in August, and Mike Millard’s limited press CD. The masterpiece recording “LA FORUM 1983 1ST NIGHT: MIKE MILLARD FIRST GENERATION CASSETTES” has been released.
However, if the big game in the west is the LA Forum in the American leg from July to August of this tour, the east is MSG. For that reason, many enthusiasts said, “I want you to release the MSG sound source …” At that time, the “Two Of Us” team raised the first appearance audience of MSG as if they had overlooked the wishes of enthusiasts.
What makes me happy is that the sound quality of the sound source excavated this time is really wonderful. The series of Philadelphia performances by the “Two Of Us” team also had really great quality sound quality, but this time it’s a level that goes even higher. First of all, the sound image is quite on, and there are places where it is slightly distorted due to that, but it is a powerful recording state that is more than compensated for it.
Among them, the most notable is the drum of the late master Tony Thompson. I was particularly surprised that he even captured the footwork of his bass drum. Thompson’s participation was a big attraction for the Serious Moonlight Tour Band, but I think he rediscovered that he supported the stage with exquisite drumming.
And because it was the first day of the first MSG show on this tour, Bowie’s spirit was not odd. As was the case with “LA FORUM 1983-“, Bowie does not include MC at all because it is the first day (laughs). It seems that he is challenging the stage with such tension and spirit, but even so, Bowie’s enthusiasm on this day is terrible. In addition, the sound quality is very good, so you can see how the band centered on Thompson firmly supports Bowie in the staging where his spirit is enthusiastic.
And “Red Sails” is a rare repertoire that has been played less frequently since the tour landed in the United States, and it was only this day that was shown during the three days of MSG. You can enjoy such rare performances, and the best new excavation audience album without any price, recording the appearance of the Serious Moonlight Tour coming to MSG for the first time!
1983年のシリアス・ムーンライト・ツアーからボウイがもっとも力を入れたであろうアメリカン・レグの初登場オーディエンスを発掘し続けてくれている「Two Of Us」チームが今回届けてくれたのは7月25日のマディソン・スクエア・ガーデン。同チームは今までMSGの前に行われたフィラデルフィア公演を公開してくれていましたが、遂に真打登場といった感じではないでしょうか。
そもそもUXBRIDGEレーベルがこれまでリリースしてきたシリアス・ムーンライト・ツアーのアメリカン・レグは7月ならデトロイト、8月だとLAフォーラムに集中していた感があり、さらには限定プレスCDによるマイク・ミラードの傑作録音「L.A. FORUM 1983 1ST NIGHT: MIKE MILLARD FIRST GENERATION CASSETTES」までリリースされています。
しかし本ツアーの7月から8月にかけてのアメリカン・レグで西の一大勝負がLAフォーラムだとすれば、東はMSG。それだけにマニアからは「MSGの音源も出してほしい…」という声が多数寄せられていました。そのタイミングで「Two Of Us」チームはまるでマニアの願いを見透かしたかのごとくMSGの初登場オーディエンスをアップしてくれたのです。
何が嬉しいかって、今回発掘された音源の音質が実に素晴らしい。「Two Of Us」チームによる一連のフィラデルフィア公演も本当に素晴らしいクオリティの音質ばかりでしたが、今回はさらに上を行くレベル。まず音像が相当にオンであり、そのせいでほんのわずかに歪んでしまう箇所もあるのですが、それを補って余りある迫力の録音状態。
そんな中でも特筆すべきは、今は亡き名手トニー・トンプソンのドラム。特に彼のバスドラのフットワークまで捉えてくれているのには驚き。トンプソンの参加はシリアス・ムーンライト・ツアー・バンド大きな魅力となっていましたが、なるほど絶妙のドラミングにてステージを支えてくれていたのだな…と再発見させてくれるのでは。
それに本ツアーにおける最初のMSGショー初日ということもあり、ボウイの気合の入りっぷりが半端じゃない。「L.A. FORUM 1983～」がそうだったように、初日ということからボウイが全然MCを盛り込まない（笑）。それほどまで緊張と気合を前にステージに挑んでるということなのでしょうが、それにしてもこの日のボウイの熱唱ぶりは凄まじい。おまけに音質が非常に良いので、彼の気合が入りまくったステージングにトンプソンを中心としたバンドがボウイをしっかりと支えて上げている様子もリアルに伝わってくる。
そして「Red Sails」はツアーがアメリカに上陸してから演奏頻度の減っていたレア・レパートリーであり、MSG三日間の中で披露されたのはこの日だけ。そんなレアな演奏まで楽しめ、なおかつシリアス・ムーンライト・ツアーが初めてMSGに降臨した様子を記録した、掛け値なしに最高の新発掘オーディエンス・アルバム！
