Of course, Wembley’s take was included in the album composed of multi-track recordings at various places in the 1974 tour, but only two takes were adopted for each CD and DVD, and it was too much from Wembley perfect reproduction. distant state. In that case, the old masterpiece “WEMBLEY STADIUM 1974” was about to be re-released to be re-evaluated, but although the title was said to be a low generation, it was not recorded from the master fact. Rather, from the level of 2022, it is a tough impression to relapse as it is. Fortunately, however, the British sound source collector who provided the Allman Brothers Band “KNEBWORTH 1974”, which is now on sale, discovered and provided the master cassette of CSNY Wembley this time!

It has a reputation as a high-quality sound source that is among the best 3 in the 1974 tour because it was captured with a surprisingly large sound image for the audience recording of the stadium concert in 1974, with a wide sense of presence in stereo since the cassette trade era. There was, and the result was the release of “WEMBLEY STADIUM 1974” (hereinafter referred to as “existing board”). On the other hand, it was also a sound source that Gene could not reach the master among traders.
In such a situation, the master cassette that was finally excavated this time, but compared to the already released version, the difference is too big. As expected of a master, the clear and clean upper feeling is exceptional. Of course, the freshness and natural feeling are greatly improved. Originally it was a high-quality stereo audience, but the quality is still too different from the last time. Compared to this version, the already-released board is no longer muddy and rough sound quality.
With this quality, it can be said that the previous “CSNY1974” official will perfectly satisfy the desires of enthusiasts who are too unsatisfactory. In addition, the monaural sound board of the leaked video has a poor mixing balance, especially in the acoustic set, for example, the virtuosity shown by Stephen Stills in “You Can’t Catch Me / Word Game”, or “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” I couldn’t hear the exciting intro. In addition, in the second half of the live, the power of “Black Queen”, in which Stills made the roaring guitar resound in the stadium, is also uneven, and it is exactly the face of the audience recording. That’s the audio from the leaked BBC footage that I first touched upon. Although it is a sound board, it is ironically excellent with the audience because it is monaural and the range is narrow. Graf Zeppelin was in charge of this compensation work, but at first glance, you will be surprised by the adjustment that does not feel uncomfortable at all. In addition, the change in sound quality that occurred when recording was resumed was also converted to monaural to alleviate discomfort. The problem with “Carry On”, which was the only drawback of the audience document of the long stadium concert, was finally resolved, and it became possible to listen without any stress.
Combined with the tremendous upper performance proved by the master cassette, the excellent audience of the 1974 CSNY tour was released in a state that can be called the best. CSNY1974年再結成ツアーを締めくくったウェンブリー・スタジアム。同会場を使って行われた最初期のロックコンサートの一つであり、BBCによって映像収録まで行われていました。当初はこのツアーからライブアルバムのリリースが噂されていたものの、それが実現したのは40年後の「CSNY1974」セット。74年ツアー各地でのマルチトラック録音から構成されたアルバムの中に当然ウェンブリーのテイクも含まれましたが、CDとDVDそれぞれで二テイクずつ採用されるだけにとどまり、ウェンブリー完全再現からはあまりにも遠い状態。その点この日は古くからステレオで音質良好なオーディエンス録音が存在しており、それを限定プレスCDにてリリースしたのが懐かしの名盤がMasterportからの「WEMBLEY STADIUM 1974」でした。
さらに同タイトルのリリースから数年後には先のBBC撮影によるプロショット映像まで流出。量的には非常に恵まれたライブとなったのですが、その映像の音声はサウンドボードながらもミキシングのバランスや映像のダビングが重なってモノラルかつ粗い状態となってしまった。そして何よりも臨場感が希薄。そして「CSNY1974」には先の理由から数曲のみの採用ということでオーディエンス録音の存在価値が延命される結果となってしまったのです。
そうなると古の名盤たる「WEMBLEY STADIUM 1974」が再評価されるべく再度のリリースが待たれるところであったのですが、同タイトルはロージェネレーションとはいいつつも、マスターからの収録ではなかったのは事実。むしろ2022年のレベルからすると、そのまま再発するのには厳しい印象。ところが幸いなことに、大好評発売中オールマン・ブラザース・バンド「KNEBWORTH 1974」を提供してくれたイギリスの音源コレクターが今度はCSNYウェンブリーのマスター・カセットを発掘＆提供してくれました！

カセット・トレード時代からステレオで広がりのある臨場感と、1974年のスタジアム・コンサートのオーディエンス録音としては驚くほど大きな音像で捉えられた状態から、74年ツアーの中でもベスト3に入る高音質音源として定評があり、その結果が「WEMBLEY STADIUM 1974」（以下“既発盤”と称します）というリリースだったのです。その一方でどうしてもトレーダー間でジェネがマスターに到達できない音源でもあった。
そうした状況の中、遂に発掘された今回のマスター・カセットなのですが、びっくり既発盤と比べてその差が大きすぎる。流石はマスター、クリアーですっきり抜けるようなアッパー感は格別。もちろん鮮度やナチュラル感も大幅に向上。元々が上質なステレオ・オーディエンスではありましたが、それでも前回とはクオリティが違い過ぎる。今回のバージョンと比べると、既発盤はもはや濁った粗い音質でしかない。
これだけのクオリティであれば、先の「CSNY1974」オフィシャルでは物足りなさすぎるマニアの欲求を見事に満たしてくれるものだと言えるでしょう。さらに流出ビデオのモノラル・サウンドボードは特にアコースティック・セットにおけるミキシングバランスがイマイチで、例えば「You Can’t Catch Me/Word Game」でスティーブン・スティルスが見せた妙技、あるいは「Suite: Judy Blue Eyes」の胸躍るイントロなどが聞き取れないほどだった。おまけにライブ後半でやはりスティルスが爆音ギターをスタジアムに鳴り響かせた「Black Queen」の迫力も段違いであり、まさにオーディエンス録音の面目躍如。皮肉なことにオーディエンスの方がちゃんとしたバランスで聞き取れてしまうという。

そんな良質オーディエンスにはライブ後半部分において二か所の欠損がありました。まずは「Deja vu」の演奏開始部分。それ以上に深刻だったのが長い演奏である「Carry On」でテープチェンジに当たって生じてしまった40秒に及ぶカット。あいにくとこの日はオーディエンス録音の別ソースというのが存在せず、そのせいで「WEMBLEY STADIUM 1974」においては放置プレー状態でリリースされてしまった訳ですが、今回はこの問題を意外な音源にて解決。
それは最初に触れたBBC撮影の流出映像の音声。サウンドボードながらモノラルでレンジ狭めな状態が皮肉にもオーディエンスとの相性抜群。この補填作業はGraf Zeppelinが担当してくれたのですが、パッと聞いた感じではまったく違和感のないアジャストぶりに舌を巻くことでしょう。さらには録音が再開された際に生じてしまった音質の変化もモノラル化させることで違和感を緩和。長丁場となったスタジアム・コンサートのオーディエンス・ドキュメント唯一の欠点だった「Carry On」での問題が遂に解消され、何のストレスもなく聞き通せるようになったのです。
