THE CLASH in 1982 stepped into the beginning of the end while sending the last masterpiece “COMBAT ROCK” to 2nd place in the UK / 7th place in the US. A new master who can fully experience the scene is here.
“October 23, 1982 Auckland performance” is engraved on this work. It is a superb audience recording when appearing at the famous festival “DAY ON THE GREEN” sponsored by Bill Graham. Speaking of 1982, not only was “COMBAT ROCK” released, but the legendary first visit to Japan was also remembered and recorded. First of all, let’s check the position of the show while looking back on the whole activity.

This is THE CLASH in 1982. “COMBAT ROCK”, which had been in production since the previous year, was released in May, and at that point Topper Headon was replaced by Terry Chimes. I will start the world tour which will be the largest in my career. The appearance of “DAY ON THE GREEN” of this work was the 16th performance of “North America # 3”, which is the final stage of such “COMBAT ROCK Tour”. The official live album “LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM” is also left from this “North America # 3”, but this work is also 10 days later (after 6 performances).
This work, which is a vacuum-packed version of such a show, has an extremely tight sound. It has been digitized directly from the original master discovered by the prestigious “JEMS”, but anyway, each sound is clear and clear. It’s a little different from the feeling of close contact that can be mistaken for a sound board, but the crisp outline has no slight blur or blur, and the vivid core flies like a laser beam. The reason for that tight feeling is probably the venue. Speaking of the site of “DAY ON THE GREEN”, it is the Oakland Coliseum, but this is an open stadium that can accommodate 47,000 to 65,000 people. It’s wide open to the sky, with no walls or ceilings to reflect sound.
Of course, even at an open venue, it would be meaningless if the PA was too far away or the surrounding area was covered in hustle and bustle, and if the wind was strong, the sound could be washed away. However, there is no need to worry about this in this work. It seems that it was recorded very close to the PA, and the direct feeling of picking up the sound output is wonderful. I don’t know much about the weather that day, but there was no rain or wind noise.
A full show that is a bit different from “LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM” is drawn with such a clear and open sound. THE WHO is the big bird on the day, and THE CLASH has about 50 minutes. Let’s organize it by comparing it with “LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM” here.
●London Calling (6 songs)
・London Calling/The Guns of Brixton/Spanish Bombs/Train in Vain/Clampdown/Brand New Cadillac(★)
● Others (9 songs)
・Disturbance: Tommy Gun / English Civil War
・Sandinista! : Police on My Back / The Magnificent Seven
・Combat Rock: Rock the Casbah / Should I Stay or Should I Go
・Others: Janie Jones (★)/Armagideon Time/I Fought the Law
* Note: “★” marks are songs that could not be heard on the official edition “LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM”.
Both this work and “LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM” are THE WHO’s opening act, and the number of songs and performance time are almost the same. While the two songs are replaced, the performance is as wonderful as that masterpiece live album. It is a live album that can be said to be “another LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM”.
Anyway, you can experience the scene of “DAY ON THE GREEN” with a clean and clear sound. I’m exhausted by this real pleasure. If the official excavation “LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM” is a masterpiece of the front world, this work is a masterpiece of on-site experience that the back world boasts. Please fully enjoy the press CD that leaves the brilliance of Omoto master sound forever.
★ The best audience recording of “October 23, 1982 DAY ON THE GREEN performance”. The original master discovered by the prestigious “JEMS”, with a super tight sound that is fiercely tightened. There is no response only to the Oakland Coliseum, which is wide open in the sky, and each sound is clear and clear. There is no slight blurring or blurring in the sharp outlines, and the vivid cores fly around like laser beams. Ten days after “LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM”, you can experience a delicious full show of “Brand New Cadillac” and “Janie Jones” that you can not listen to in the official work.
