What is imbued with this work is the performance of “November 30, 2002: Tokyo International Forum”. It is an excellent audience recording that vacuum-packed the whole story. I came to Japan on a tour accompanying “FRANTIC”, but it was about a year after the reunion ROXY MUSIC, and it was the first time in seven years as a solo. It’s also a good opportunity, so let’s start with the ferry’s history of coming to Japan.

This is the history of Bryan Ferry’s visit to Japan. In 2002, there were only two days of “Tokyo (first day) + Osaka (second day)”, and this work is a live album venue that vacuum-packed the Tokyo performance.
And the sound is neat and beautiful. Actually, it’s a recording with a little distance, but the thick sound is fresh, plump and really beautiful. The examination of the piano gently pours down, the beats increase the dynamism by the sound, and the horn creates a rich sound world. And the ferry vocals play the leading role in that. The singing voice accompanied by the sound is thick and gentle, and it soaks into the heart with dandyism.
It is around “The Thrill Of It All” where the show begins to accelerate that the sound that prioritizes the atmosphere changes. It starts to rock powerfully from this area, but I thought that it would be filled with the sound of the drums, and the sound suddenly became clearer here. Perhaps the taper itself changed the direction or setting of the microphone at a quick decision. The effect is enormous, and the vocals and guitar are tightened like a laser beam, and the production of the show that switches the mood is felt even more vividly. Moreover, perhaps because of the sound produced by the on-site PA, the sound gets better and better as the show progresses.
The flexible feat of changing the sound quality along with the ensemble was possible because the taper was accustomed to recording. Actually, it was a recently talked-about recorder who worked on this work. YES’s “SHIBUYA 1998 2ND NIGHT (Amity 634)” and “TOKYO 2003 2ND NIGHT (Amity 635)” have been well received, and BRAND X and David Sylvian released at the same time this week. This work is the Bryan Ferry version of such a masterpiece collection (By the way, the same venue / recorder’s ROXY MUSIC version “TOKYO 2001 FINAL NIGHT” will also be released as a gift, so please do not miss it).
What is drawn with such beautiful and rich sound is a full show that appeals to the present progressive tense while covering a wide range of careers. Let’s organize the contents of the set here.

… And it looks like this. It is thicker with 5 songs from the latest work “FRANTIC” and 3 songs from “BOYS AND GIRLS”, but all the others are selected from different works. It’s a very diverse and colorful show, including the covers “My One and Only Love” and “Wooly Bully”.
Slowly delicious, stylish and mellow. This is a new excavation live album where you can fully experience a solo show that is different from ROXY MUSIC with a wonderful sound. This work itself is a masterpiece, and it is interesting to listen to it together with ROXY MUSIC’s gift album “TOKYO 2001 FINAL NIGHT” by the recorder. One full of fun unique to any underground sound source. Please chew it carefully.

んな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2002年11月30日：東京国際フォーラム」公演。その一部始終を真空パックした絶品オーディエンス録音です。『FRANTIC』に伴うツアーでの来日だったわけですが、再結成ROXY MUSICの約１年後であり、ソロとしては７年ぶりでした。良い機会でもありますので、今回はフェリーの来日史から始めてみましょう。

これがブライアン・フェリー来日の歴史。2002年は「東京（初日）＋大阪（２日目）」の２日間だけであり、本作はその東京公演を真空パックしたライヴアルバム場のです。
そして、そのサウンドは端正にして美麗。実のところ、やや距離のある録音ではあるのですが、厚めの鳴りが瑞々しくふくよかで実に美しいのです。ピアノの調べは優しく降り注ぎ、ビートは鳴りによってダイナミズムが増し、ホーンがリッチな音世界を紡ぎ出していく。そして、その中で主役を張るのがフェリーのヴォーカル。鳴りを伴った歌声はぶ厚くも優しく、ダンディズムを湛えながらスッと心に染み込んでいく。
そんな雰囲気優先のサウンドが一転するのはショウが加速し始める「The Thrill Of It All」辺り。この辺から力強くロックし始めるわけですが、ドラムの鳴りで塗りつぶされるかと思いきや、ここでサウンドが一気にクリアさを増す。恐らくはテーパー自身がとっさの判断でマイクの向きかセッティングを変えたのでしょう。その効果は絶大で、ヴォーカルやギターがレーザー光線のようにキリッと引き締まり、ムードを切り替えるショウの演出が一層鮮やかに感じられるのです。しかも、現場ＰＡの出音でもあるのか、その後もショウが進むほどにどんどん音が良くなっていくのです。
アンサンブルに沿って音質を変えるというフレキシブルな離れ業ができたのも、テーパーが録音慣れしているからに他ならない。実は、本作を手掛けたのは最近話題の録音家。YESの『SHIBUYA 1998 2ND NIGHT（Amity 634）』や『TOKYO 2003 2ND NIGHT（Amity 635）』が評判を呼び、今週同時リリースのBRAND Xやデヴィッド・シルヴィアンも手掛けた人物。本作は、そんな名手コレクションのブライアン・フェリー篇なのです（ちなみに、同会場／同録音家のROXY MUSIC篇『TOKYO 2001 FINAL NIGHT』もギフト・リリースされますので、ぜひ併せてどうぞ）。

じんわりと滋味深く、スタイリッシュでまろやか。ROXY MUSICとはまた違ったソロ・ショウを素晴らしいサウンドでフル体験できる新発掘ライヴアルバムです。本作自体が傑作でもありますし、録音家によるROXY MUSICのギフト・アルバム『TOKYO 2001 FINAL NIGHT』と併せて聴くのも面白い。どんなアンダーグラウンド音源ならではの愉しみに溢れた１本。どうぞ、じっくりと噛みしめてください。
