This is Bryan Ferry in 2002. In 2003, solo and reunion ROXY MUSIC shows were mixed, but in 2002, he devoted himself to solo. His home country England was carried out as a finishing touch to the European tour, and the Leicester performance of this work is the 10th performance. It was a concert one and a half months before the performance in Japan.
This work, which is a vacuum-packed version of such a show, is an original recording brought through its own route, but this is already “The Mion”. Since the recording person himself was handed over, it is definitely an audience recording, and lively applause rises between songs. However, the essential performance sound is completely away from the audience. A very thick core, fine details, a direct feeling at zero distance …. The touch of the piano, the breathing of the vocals, the luster of the saxophone, the fine details are on and super clear.
But it’s also wrong to say “it’s like a soundboard”. No, the level of sound quality itself is suitable to be called so, but such a rough expression makes me feel rude to the aesthetics of this work. In fact, if you listen carefully with headphones, the vocal sounds have a sense of space, which is very beautiful. It is completely different from the sense of distance and emptiness, and it gives a luster like an effect that has been carefully calculated through repeated adjustments, and yet the natural echo creates a miraculous elegance. The beautiful scenery that this sound and core weave is like a church organ. If you listen to it at a glance, it is “official work level high sound quality”, and if you listen carefully and face it with all your soul, you will notice that it is full of “beauty because it is an audience”.
A treasure chest of masterpieces different from ROXY MUSIC that is depicted with such an extremely beautiful sound. As mentioned above, “TOKYO 2002 (Uxbridge 1481)”, which was performed in Japan, is also a standard at our shop, so let’s organize it while comparing.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2002年10月17日レスター公演」。そのオーディエンス録音……です、たぶん。いきなり頼りなくなって申し訳ありませんが、これはちょっと客録の音じゃない。とんでもない美録音なのです。その気になる内容の前に、まずはショウのポジション。2002年と言えば『FRANTIC』の年でもあり、ソロとしては７年ぶりの来日公演が実現した事でも思い出深い。まずは活動全景を俯瞰し、ショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが2002年のブライアン・フェリー。2003年はソロと再結成ROXY MUSICのショウが混在していましたが、2002年はソロに専念。母国イギリスは欧州ツアーの仕上げとして実施され、本作のレスター公演はその10公演目。日本公演の１ヶ月半前にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウを真空パックした本作は、独自ルートからもたらされたオリジナル録音なのですが、これがもう「ザ・美音」。録音者本人か譲られたので間違いなくオーディエンス録音ですし、曲間になると生々しい喝采が沸き上がる。しかし、肝心要の演奏音は完全にオーディエンス離れしている。極太の芯、細やかなディテール、ゼロ距離なダイレクト感……。ピアノのタッチも、ヴォーカルの息づかいも、サックスの光沢も、細部の微細部までオンで超鮮明なのです。
それでいて「まるでサウンドボード」と言い切ってしまうのも違う。いや、サウンド・クオリティのレベル自体はそう呼ぶに相応しいのですが、そんな大雑把な表現では本作の美感に対して失礼な気がしてくる。実際ヘッドフォンでよくよく聴き込んでみると、ヴォーカルの鳴りに空間感覚も宿っており、これがとことん美しい。距離感やスカスカ感とはまったく違い、調整に調整を重ねて入念に計算し尽くされたエフェクトのような艶を与え、それでいて自然なエコーが奇跡のような気品を生み出している。この音響と芯が織りなす美景は、チャーチオルガンのような世界。パッと聴くと「オフィシャル作品レベルの高音質」であり、よくよく聴き込み、全霊で対峙すると「オーディエンスだからこその美」に満ちている事に気づかされるのです。
