However, with Van Halen’s death, the weight of the rare opening performance of the day has increased significantly. It’s a year since his death, which was too early, and it’s time to re-evaluate this live video.

The 2014 tour was based on the album “HIGH HOPES” at that time, and Tom Morello, the guitarist of Rage Against the Machine who was a collaborator on the album, supported the E Street Band. このレアなオープニングだけはオフィシャルのYouTubeアカウントにて公開されていますが、この日はライブ全体がウェブを介して素晴らしい画質で配信されており、それも今となっては忘れ去られてしまった感が否めません。
しかしヴァン・ヘイレンがこの世を去ってしまったことで、この日のレアなオープニング演奏の重みがはるかに増してしまいました。ましてや早すぎた彼の死から一年、正にこのライブ映像を再評価すべきタイミングではないでしょうか。

2014年のツアーは当時のアルバム「HIGH HOPES」を引っ提げたもので、同アルバムでコラボレーターとなっていたレイジ・アゲインスト・ザ・マシーンのギタリスト、トム・モレロがE・ストリート・バンドのサポート・メンバーとして帯同していた時期。この映像を見ると、彼がいたからこそレアなオープニングが可能であったのだと痛感させられます。モレロはエディを彷彿とさせるようなライトハンド奏法を披露しており、こういっては何ですがE・ストリート・バンド他のメンバーでは不可能だったはず。

そんな衝撃的かつレアなオープニングだけでも未だに魅力の褪せないライブ映像ですが、全編を通して見ていると、現在では不可能としか思えないような場面が続出。そもそもこの時期のE・ストリート・バンドはメンバー人数がかなり肥大しており、これほどの大所帯バンドがステージで一本のマイクを分け合ってコーラスすることなど、今ではありえない光景かと。
それ以上に鮮烈なのが、観客に絡みまくるスプリングスティーン。恐らくは配信上の演出を考慮してという可能性も高いのですが、会場の前方は女性客が占めており、彼女たちにスプリングスティーンが絡みまくる。
「Sprit In The Night」ではステージから降りて一人の女性をロックオン、しかも首と胸の間に手を当てる（微セクハラか笑）、「Darlington County」や「Waitin’ On A Sunny Day」では女の子をステージに上げて歌わせるといった具合。
これが「Dancing In The Dark」になると大量の女性をステージに上げたまではよかったものの、スプリングスティーンが歌うそばから彼女たちが自撮りを求め、その結果エンディングを迎えても曲がなかなか終われないというハプニングに発展。流石のスプリングスティーンもこれには疲れてしまった様子。何ともスマホ時代らしい光景でした。

そうしたハプニングはもちろん、ライブ自体が長時間に及びながらも全く中だるみしない展開はさすが長年マラソン・ショーをやってきただけのことはある。名曲が連発というだけでなく、モレロをフィーチャーした「The Ghost Of Tom Joad」ではパーティーっぽい雰囲気から一転してシリアスな雰囲気になるなど、彼がツアーに本格参加したことでショーにメリハリがついたことも飽きの来ない要員ではないでしょうか。
そうした大所帯バンド時代の頂点とも言えた時期の記録でありながら、最後は奥方パティと二人だけでしっとり「Thunder Road」で締めくくられるは感動的である一方、放蕩の限りを尽くした（笑）スプリングスティーンが最後に妻を立てるような形で終わっているように映るのが微笑ましい。
