As you can guess from the fact that “Definitive” is added to the title, this sound source is a 1978 audience recording with existing items. There are some excellent sound sources for Bob Dylan’s 1978 tour around the United States in November, but here is one of them. Released as “LIVE AT THE PITSTOP ’78” by the nostalgic Dylan specialty label Wanted Man (although it was a mystery that the jacket photo was Dylan of Toes Place in 1990 …), it represents November to enthusiasts. I got a rating as an item.
At this time, Dylan had a concert at the same Seattle venue using the Heck Edmonton Pavilion, which was a smaller arena instead of the Center Coliseum. The nearby, dry, muscular and attractive audibility was also appreciated by enthusiasts. Above all, Dylan’s singing voice is close. It is natural that a copy board will be produced with such quality, and in the 21st century, “STREET LEGAL IN SEATTLE”, which is a copy of “LIVE AT THE PITSTOP ’78” and added equalization, was released. At that time, Wanted Man was difficult to obtain, and although it was a copy board, it was highly evaluated. This is also due to the excellence of the original sound source.
However, 20 years have passed since the copy board as well as the original Wanted Man. The 1978 tour sound source, which boasts such ease of listening, was not stably supplied, and it was difficult to obtain it. This situation has been going on for many years, so even if the copy board from the head family reappears, it may have been as popular as “STREET LEGAL IN SEATTLE”.
Even more surprisingly, even though the JEMS team unearthed a master version of this November 1978 masterpiece a few years ago, it was neglected … in other words, a new from the master. It is said that the version could be released but was left unattended. I wonder if such a standard sound source has fallen into such a state.
The limited press CD release from the master that enthusiasts all over the world have been waiting for will be released this time, but as it was recorded from the master reel, the upper feeling is vivid. Even “LIVE AT THE PITSTOP ’78”, which seemed to have such high sound quality, had a bad point of being reminiscent of the state of going through several cassette copies before this version, so this version is better. Is overwhelmingly refreshing and clear sound quality. Since it is a monaural recording, it is easier to understand the upper feeling when the volume is increased from the speaker, and it is also the master reel that the scene before the appearance of Dylan at the opening and before the start of the “My Back Pages” instrument is recorded longer than the existing board. Unique.
The appeal of this sound source is that it not only conveys the wonderfulness of the sound quality, but also the wonderfulness of the stage in November 1978. The 1978 tour, which started from the first performance in Japan, initially weakened the rock color and instead became a song show concept with a big band. However, as the tour progressed, Dylan seemed to start to notice “Isn’t it rock?” From the time he recorded the album “STREET LEGAL”, and he heard in the popular “EARLS COURT 1978” and “PARIS 1978 FINAL NIGHT” in Europe.・ The rock color will obviously start to increase from the tour.
When the long-term American tour started after the summer vacation, Dylan’s stage costumes were wiped out of the entertainer-like costumes, and they suddenly changed to rock-like. As I heard in the best-selling “MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1978 1ST NIGHT”, I tried various repertoires in September and strengthened the lock, and it became unwavering in November.
Furthermore, what Dylan was particular about throughout 1978 was that he was aiming to be a “ballad singer”. It was hard to understand how to create an atmosphere like a song show at the beginning, but in fact Dylan wanted to become a singer and sing ballads. In addition to that, the new song “Senor (Tales Of Yankee Power)” from “STREET LEGAL” will be released, and I want to aim for the path to become a ballad singer.
It was the Seattle performance that the rock color and the ballad singer’s first time matched well, and “Mr. Tambourine Man”, which was played pop at the Budokan etc., changed to a ballad arrangement with a slower tempo. If you think about it, “Tangled Up In Blue”, which was played in a ballad arrangement from the beginning, has a gospel atmosphere added to it, which makes you foresee the style of the following year, but above all, Dylan sings comfortably. ..
Of course, even in “Just Like A Woman” etc., he will show off his ballad singer for the first time, but the band’s performance is also tough as he has been touring. Ian Wallace’s drumming, which had been devoted to restrained play in the album “Senor”, is also fierce. And above all, “Masters Of War” has evolved into the best hard rock, and it will defeat not only him but also guitarist Billy Cross.
The charm of the American tour is that the original ballad line is well meshed with the evolution of such a rock-like sound, and the book captures its unique sound and Dylan in excellent condition with excellent sound quality and sound image. The charm of the sound source. When this becomes the finale’s “Changing Of The Guards”, the hard performances that have greatly evolved from the album version and Dylan’s wild songs are overwhelming. The literal definitive edition recorded by the master of Seattle in 1978, which enthusiasts all over the world have been waiting for, is finally released. Please listen carefully until the end.
