いかがでしょう。ピッツバーグは屈指のFM音源やサウンドボード音源ですし、フレズノやナッシュヴィルは70年代でも5指に入る超・高音質オーディエンス録音。マニアの方なら1つはお持ちになっているか、名前を聞いたことがあるであろう傑作録音ばかりが並んでいるのです。これだけ同会場の名作が連なるなど、SABBATH全史はもとより、長いロック史でもそうそうあることではありません。しかし、同会場録音はこれで終わりではなかった。今回ご紹介する本作は、ドイツの“Offenbach Stadhalle”で録音された同会場セット。これまでの同会場シリーズはすべてアメリカ公演でしたが、今回はシリーズ初のヨーロッパ公演(70年代のオッフェンバッハ録音自体、この2本しかありません)。しかも、今までのシリーズでは叶わなかった完全収録同士のカップリングなのです!
本作の構成は、2枚組×2公演の4枚組。ディスク1・2が“TECHNICAL ECSTASY TOUR”の「1977年4月7日」録音、ディスク3・4が“10TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR 1978”の「1978年10月11日」となっています。ディスク3・4は、かつて「GERMAN SHOCK WAVE(Shades 175)」として通常リリースされたこともある録音で、1978年の大定番です。しかし、ディスク1・2の1977年の録音も、その大定番にかなり似たサウンドで、同じようにマニア筋から「サウンドボードばりのクリアさと迫力」と謳われる。テーパーの名前までは伝わっていませんが、「録音家の少なかった70年代」「同会場」「ほとんど同じクオリティ」を考え合わせると、同じ人物の手による録音かも知れません。この1977年録音にも既発「EUROPEAN ECSTACY」がありますが、それよりもジェネの若いマスターを使用し、ナチュラルなサウンドを活かしたサウンドに仕上げました。
さらに、当時の新曲を交えたセットリストもポイント。「Symptom Of The Universe」で走り出し、「Snowblind」「War Pigs」と繋いでいく構成は同じですが、その後が新曲ポジション。1977年(ディスク1)では「TECHNICAL ECSTASY」の「Gypsy」、1978年(ディスク3)には「NEVER SAY DIE!」のタイトル曲や「Shock Wave」が披露される。特に「Gypsy」「Shock Wave」は、オジーのソロや再結成SABBATHでも演奏されず、ライヴバージョンが聴けるのは後にも先にも当時だけです。
また、ショウ後半も2つのツアーは酷似。「Dirty Women」を口火に、さまざまな曲を盛り込んだ長大なジャムタイムを30分近く披露し、「Iron Man」「Children Of The Grave」「Paranoid」で締める構成。しかし、そのジャムタイムの構成は異なり、1977年(ディスク2)では「Rock ‘n’ Roll Doctor」や「N.I.B.」、1978年(ディスク4)では「Sabbath Bloody Sabbath」のメインリフを盛り込む。さらに、ディスク4には、貴重な「She’s Gone」のアウトロシーンも収録しています。マニアックな違いではあるものの、こうしたスポンティニアスな流れ、空気を味わうからこそのブートレッグ。そして、これこそが再結成SABBATHにはない“70年代だけの旨み”なのです。

因縁深い“TECHNICAL ECSTASY TOUR 1976-1977”&“10TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR 1978”、その4つめの同会場コレクションです。もちろん、初めて両ツアーをお聴きになる方には極上サウンドボードの「DEFINITIVE PITTSBURGH」や超・高音質の「IN FRESNO」を真っ先にお薦めしますが、両作で“同会場モノ”の面白さを知った方には、ぜひご体験いただきたい4枚組。1本ずつでも傑作のライヴアルバムですが、この2ツアーは同会場を2つ揃えて初めて完全体。しかも、シリーズ初の“両公演の完全収録”セットです。ぜひ、この機会に。
