BLACK SABBATH in the “BORN AGAIN” era, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. A full live album where you can experience the highlight performance is now available.
The highlight performance is “August 27, 1983 Reading Festival”. It is a complete audience recording that vacuum-packed the whole story. Speaking of Reading Festival in the Ian Gillan era, the FM sound board is famous, and this week the new press masterpiece “READING ROCK ’83: FRIDAY ROCK SHOW (Zodiac 605)” will also appear. However, the broadcast sound board is an incomplete version of the show. To fully experience the legendary stage, there can only be audience recording. On the other hand, it is a habit that this show has only a legend and some audience recordings have been excavated. Some of the sounds were unbearable to listen to, and only part of the show was recorded. Under such circumstances, this work is the best master in terms of recording time and sound, and it is a complete recording live album that complements the slightly missing parts with another recording.
“Then why is Redding the highlight and the legend?” In order to explain the meaning of that, let’s first look back on the whole activity related to “BORN AGAIN”.

This is BLACK SABBATH in the Ian Gillan era. Roughly, it was “first half = Europe / second half = North America”, but Europe can also be divided into two, and “Europe # 1” at the beginning was a warm-up mini tour of the new system. The main target was the appearance at the Reading Festival. For better or worse, we unveiled the true value of “Gillan + SABBATH”, which has attracted attention from all over the world.
And this work is a definitive edition that allows you to fully experience such a highlight performance. The base is a traditional name recording, the sound is clear and fresh, and the on core is powerful. Although it is a sound that seems to be an audience that sucks in the conversational voices at the scene, the essential performance sound is vivid even to the millet, the outline is clearly approaching, and there is no sense of distance. The key is the venue. The Reading Festival is an outdoor stage set up in a wide open square like MONSTERS OF ROCK. There are no walls or ceilings that reflect the sound, and the sound emitted by the PA is directly picked up and recorded clearly and vividly. Of course, if it is outdoors, it is not so easy that the sound quality is always high, and in fact other recordings of the same performance are broken into pieces or become unstable due to the wind. There is no other recording as stable and clear as this work.
Of course, no matter how wonderful it is, it’s an analog cassette recording. The lack of tape change is inevitable, and the previous group lacked the beginning of “Disturbing The Priest”. In this work, it is complemented by another recording of second place quality that was excavated after that. We have realized a complete live album where you can enjoy all the songs without missing a single sound.

… and it looks like this. You can also enjoy “Born Again” and “Keep It Warm”, which do not have a sound board, in the explosive tension version unique to Redding. Also, in “Europe # 1”, it is also a point that there is no song from the Ronnie era. From “Europe # 2”, “Heaven And Hell” and “North America # 2” will pick up “Neon Knights”, but this was too much. “Good/bad” and “suitable/unsuitable”, the two vocal ranges are too different, too high for Gillan to sing normally, and too low to push through with a shout. However, this work of “Europe # 1” does not have such an impossible Ronnie song, and you can enjoy “Guillan style Sabbath” purely.
On the other hand, there are songs in Reading where Gillan self-destructs, perhaps because he’s not used to it yet, or because he’s overpowered. A typical example is “Digital Bitch”. While making a terrible shout, the lyrics are clearly blown away. What’s interesting is that they can sing perfectly on FM broadcasts. Perhaps it was overdubbed after the show, but you can see how they valued Reading Festival around just broadcasting.

“Reading in 1983,” which is known for Gillan’s unparalleled singing, was the first big stage for the game. そのハイライト公演とは、「1983年８月27日レディング・フェスティバル」。その一部始終を真空パックした完全オーディエンス録音です。イアン・ギラン時代のレディング・フェスと言えばFMサウンドボードが有名で、今週はその最高峰を更新するプレス新名盤『READING ROCK ’83: FRIDAY ROCK SHOW（Zodiac 605）』も登場します。しかし、放送サウンドボードはあくまでもショウの不完全版。伝説ステージをフル体験するには、オーディエンス録音しかあり得ません。その一方で、このショウは伝説だけあってオーディエンス録音も幾つか発掘されているのがクセモノ。中には聴くに耐えないサウンドであったり、ショウの一部しか録音されていなかったり。本作は、そんな中で収録時間でもサウンドでもベストなマスターであり、なおかつ極わずかに欠けていたパートも別録音で補完した完全収録ライヴアルバムなのです。
では、なぜレディングはハイライトで伝説なのか。その意味をご説明するためにも、まずは『BORN AGAIN』にまつわる活動全景から振り返ってみましょう。

これがイアン・ギラン時代のBLACK SABBATH。ざっくり「前半＝欧州／後半＝北米」だったのですが、ヨーロッパも二分でき、冒頭の「欧州#1」は新体制のウォームアップ的ミニ・ツアーでした。そのメイン・ターゲットだったのがレディング・フェスへの出演。良くも悪くも全世界の注目を集めていた「ギラン＋SABBATH」の真価をお披露目したわけです。
そして、本作はそんなハイライト公演を完全体験できる決定盤。ベースとなっているのは伝統の名録音で、そのサウンドはクリアで瑞々しく、オンな芯も力強い。現場の会話声も吸い込んだオーディエンスらしいサウンドではあるのですが、肝心の演奏音がキビまで鮮やかで輪郭もくっきりと迫ってきて距離感もない。その要は会場でしょう。レディング・フェスはMONSTERS OF ROCKと同じように大きく開けた広場に設営された野外ステージ。音を反射する壁も天井もなく、ＰＡが吐き出す出音をダイレクトに拾っていてくっきり鮮やかに録音できるのです。もちろん、野外なら必ず高音質になるほどカンタンではなく、実際に同公演の他録音はバリバリに割れてしまったり、風で不安定になったり。本作ほど安定してクリアな録音は他にありません。
もちろん、どれだけ素晴らしくてもアナログのカセット録音。テープチェンジの欠けは避けられず、これまでの既発群は「Disturbing The Priest」の冒頭が欠けていました。本作では、その後に発掘された２位クオリティの別録音で補完。全曲を１音漏らさず楽しめる完全ライヴアルバムを実現しました。
では、その完全セットとはいかなるものなのか。FMサウンドボードでは聴けないレパートリーもたっぷり楽しめますので、ここで比較しながらフルセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。サウンドボードが存在しない「Born Again」「Keep It Warm」もレディングならではの爆テンション・バージョンで楽しめる。また、「欧州#1」ではロニー時代の曲がないのもポイント。「欧州#2」からは「Heaven And Hell」、「北米#2」では「Neon Knights」を取り上げるようになるわけですが、これがムリすぎでした。「上手い／下手」「似合う／似合わない」以前に２人の声域が違いすぎ、ギランにとっては普通に歌うには高すぎて、シャウトで押し切るには低すぎる。しかし「欧州#1」の本作にはそんなムリなロニー曲がなく、「ギラン流サバス」を純粋に楽しめるのです。
その一方、レディングではまだ慣れていなかったのか、あるいは勢い余ったのかギランが自己崩壊してしまう曲もある。典型的なのは「Digital Bitch」。凄絶なシャウトを轟かせつつ、明らかに歌詞が吹っ飛んでしまっている。面白いのは、FM放送ではきっちり歌えていること。恐らくはショウの後でオーバーダブしたのでしょうが、ただの放送にそこまでする辺り、いかに彼らがレディング・フェスを重要視していたのかが分かります。
