It’s not unreasonable, but for a while after the Beatles debut, all EMI recording session tapes had been discarded. Because at that time they were just a trendy pop group, and no one (even the person) expected to be as great as it was. Once the record is complete, the rest is poi. Naturally. The fact that most of their first album session tapes still exist in the midst of such a policy is a miracle. From the work document described there, the stereo sound image was corrected and released was “PLEASE PLEASE ME SESSIONS: IN SPECTRAL STEREO”.
However, this was the only fortunate example, and until the second half of 1963, EMI had discarded all session tapes. Because of that, only one session tape is left for the next album “WITH THE BEATLES”, and no session tape is left for the single “She Loves You”. The only session in this barren situation that escaped destruction like a remote island was the March 5 session for the third single “From Me To You”. Surprisingly, the session tape is completely left behind, and the session of the same day is documented in a size that fits on a CD.

At this point in time, EMI was recording in two-track stereo, and it was recorded in the so-called crying stereo image, with the performance and vocals split into left and right, taking over the first album. Therefore, this time again, famous reordinator Lord Reith has done the same localization correction as “PLEASE PLEASE ME SESSIONS: IN SPECTRAL STEREO”. Now you can enjoy the March 5 session with the natural stereo image without the extreme separation.
From this day’s session, it was officially recorded in the iTunes release album “BOOTLEG RECORDINGS 1963”, focusing on the complete take, but the stereo image divided into left and right remains unchanged. This doesn’t mean that the entire existing session is heard, so it’s natural that it was unsatisfactory for mania. So, this release is a stereo image fix based on the complete sound source that has been around for a long time.

At this point, there is no idea to overdub harmonica in “Thank You Girl” (it was done on March 13th, but the session tape was discarded), and the work on the two songs was completed. However, because there was still time left for recording these two songs, the Beatles recorded the third song. That is “One After 909”. Among the original songs made by John and Paul, they are in an old category and are included in private recordings before their debut.
It is clear that the arrangement was completed and it was possible to record immediately, so even though Paul struggled with the situation of losing the pick and playing the base with his finger, this was OK with few takes. However, since George was not able to play the interlude, another part for interlude replacement editing was also recorded here. However, unlike other two songs, it is stored in the warehouse. Eventually in 1969, it was re-recorded and the eyes of the day were seen.
The excerpt of the session scenery of this song was recorded in “ANTHOLOGY 1,” and the completed version was also recorded together, but it was recorded in monaural because it disliked the unnatural stereo balance. An unpublished collection of “SESSIONS” recorded in a different compilation is also processed in the same way.

無理もないことですが、ビートルズのデビューからしばらくはEMIのレコーディング・セッションのテープがことごとく破棄されていました。何故なら当時の彼らは流行りのポップグループでしかなく、まさかあれほどまでの偉大な存在になるとは誰も（本人たちでさえも）予想していなかったのです。レコードが完成してしまえは残りはポイ。当然のことでしょう。こうした方針が当たり前だった中で彼らのファーストアルバムのセッション・テープの大半が現存しているという事実、これは奇跡に等しいことなのです。そこに記された作業のドキュメントから、ステレオ音像を補正してリリースしたのが大好評「PLEASE PLEASE ME SESSIONS: IN SPECTRAL STEREO」でした。
しかし幸運な例はこの時だけでして、1963年の後半までEMIはセッション・テープをどれもこれも破棄ばかりしていました。そのせいで次のアルバム「WITH THE BEATLES」のセッション・テープはたった一本しか残されておらず、シングル「She Loves You」に至っては一切のセッション・テープが残されていません。初期の大ヒット曲であり、しかも明らかに複数のテイクを編集した痕跡のある同曲のセッションが明らかになることは永遠にないでしょう。
この不毛な状況の中で唯一、離れ狐島のごとく破棄を逃れたのがサード・シングル「From Me To You」の為に行われた3月5日のセッション。こちらは驚いたことにセッション・テープが完全に残されており、おまけにCD一枚にすっぽり収まるサイズに同日のセッションを見事にドキュメントしてくれるのです。

この時点でもEMIは2トラック・ステレオでレコーディングを行っており、ファーストアルバムに引き継いで演奏とボーカルが左右にぱっくりと分かれた、いわゆる泣き別れ状態のステレオ音像で録音されていました。そこで今回も「PLEASE PLEASE ME SESSIONS: IN SPECTRAL STEREO」の時と同様の定位補正を名手Lord Reithが敢行。あの極端な分離の違和感なしの自然なステレオ・イメージで3月5日のセッションが楽しめるようになりました。
この日のセッションからはオフィシャルでもiTunesリリースのアルバム「BOOTLEG RECORDINGS 1963」で完奏テイクを中心に収録されましたが、そこでも左右に分かれたステレオ・イメージは変わらず。これではせっかく現存するセッション全体が聞かれる訳でもないので、マニアからすると物足りない内容だったのは当然のこと。そこで以前から出回っている完全版音源を元に、ステレオ・イメージを直してみせたのが今回のリリース。
前回の「PLEASE PLEASE ME SESSIONS: IN SPECTRAL STEREO」に劣らず、今回もLord Reithによって生まれ変わったステレオ・イメージの仕上がりは素晴らしい。テクノロジーの進化によって、ここまで見事にボーカル・バランスが真ん中へと移動してくれたのです。それでいて演奏全体のステレオ感も保たれている。

セッションという性質上、同じ曲の演奏が続くということからマニアックな内容に感じられる方がおられるか知れませんが、初期ビートルズのヒットシングルが作られるドキュメントとして大いに楽しめる内容であることを申し上げておきたい。しかもファーストアルバム同様グループが「せーの」始める一発撮り状態だから聞き飽きないのです。セッションは当然「From Me To You」からスタートするのですが、最初の完奏であるテイク2などは、後の演奏と比べるとゆったりとしたテンポで悪く言えば勢いが足りない。それが演奏を重ねるにつれてどんどん垢抜けてくるから聞き応えは十分。
テイク7でOKが出ると、今度はB面用「Thank You Girl」をレコーディング。これもOKテイクが決まると、それぞれのオーバーダビングや編集用パートの作業に入ります。これらの中でも非常に面白いのが「From Me To You」の「take 11 edit piece 4」。ここではイントロのハミングが「ラララーララルンルンラー」ではなく「ウウウーウウウンウンウー」という、まるで唸るようなハミングで歌われているのが驚き。わざとかすれた声でハミングしてみせた「From Me To You take 13 edit piece 6」に至っては笑いを誘うほどなのですが、案の定どちらの試みも没。こうした試行錯誤が垣間見られるのもセッションならでは。

この時点で「Thank You Girl」にハーモニカをオーバーダビングするアイディアはなく（それは3月13日に行われましたが、セッション・テープは破棄）予定した二曲の作業が完了します。ところが、これら二曲のレコーディング用に設けられた時間がまだ余っていたことから、ビートルズは第三の曲をレコーディング。それが「One After 909」。ジョンとポールが作ったオリジナル曲の中では古い部類に入り、デビュー前のプライベート録音にも含まれていた曲です。
それだけにアレンジが完成していてすぐにでも録音できる状態だったのは明らかで、ポールがピックを失くして指でベースを弾く事態に悪戦苦闘しつつも、こちらは少ないテイクでOKに。ただしジョージが間奏をまるで弾けてなかったことから、ここでも間奏の差し替え編集用パートが別途録音されました。にもかかわらず他の二曲と違いお蔵入り。結局1969年になって改めて録音し直されて日の目を見ることになります。
この曲のセッション風景の抜粋は「ANTHOLOGY 1」に収録され、さらには完成バージョンも一緒に収録されていましたが、やはりステレオ・バランスの不自然さを嫌ってモノラルで収録されていたのです。それとは違う編集で収録した未発表曲集のお蔵入りアルバム「SESSIONS」もまた同傾向の処理。
そこで今回はセッション全体のステレオ・イメージを補正するだけにとどまらず、その上でLord Reithが独自にセッション音源から編集し、これら三曲のモノラルでリリースされていたバージョン違いを何とステレオで聞かれるように仕立てたバージョンをトラック34以降にまとめて収録。さらには例の「From Me To You」ハミングの没アイディアも仮想完成バージョンとして楽しめます。「One After 909」も先に挙げたモノ・ミックスの編集ながらステレオで楽しめるバージョンとなりました。
よって今回はセッションのリアルなドキュメントとリアルなステレオ音像というだけにとどまらず、新たなステレオ・バージョンまで付け加えられた内容がマニアをニヤリとさせてくれるでしょう。1963年3月5日にビートルズが録音した三曲のドキュメントをじっくりとお楽しみください！
