However, in 2014, about nine years ago, the surprise that “WOLFGANG’S VAULT” released an astonishing black and white professional shot video from this tour became a reality. . It is presumed that the live at Asbury Park (the venue where King Crimson recorded for “USA” two years ago) was taken for recording three days after the previous Washington live. A professional shot video recorded with a black and white video camera has appeared! Although it is black and white, the image quality is sufficiently clear, and the angle that makes full use of each member’s up is a first-class live video level. There was no MC at the time of release, and the inter-song part that progressed indifferently was cut, and only “Up On Cripple Creek” caused interference over time, but other than that there is no problem at all.

しかし76年のザ・バンドは当初ライブ活動を停止するつもりすらなく、むしろ1974年を最後として遠ざかっていたステージへの復帰を渇望されていたのです。そんな声に応えて行われたのが76年6月からのライブ・ツアーでした。このツアーからは7月17日のワシントンで行われたライブがラジオ放送用に収録されて有名で、現在では「WOLFGANG’S VAULT」サイトで聴くことが可能なサウンドボード音源であります。さらには9月にもニューヨークでの公演が放送されています。しかしそういったサウンドボード録音が居並ぶ一方で、映像に関しては存在するとは思われておらず、それどころか「THE LAST WALTZ」やそれの宣伝用に出演した「SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE」テレビ映像があるだけでも十分だろうと思われていたものです。

ところが今から約9年前の2014年、あの「WOLFGANG’S VAULT」がこのツアーから驚愕の白黒プロショット映像を公開するというサプライズが現実のものとなりました。。先のワシントンでのライブから三日後にアズベリー・パークで行われたライブ（この二年前にはキング・クリムゾンが「USA」用の収録を行った会場です）を記録用に撮影したと推測される白黒ビデオ・カメラで収録したプロショット映像が登場したのです！白黒ではありますが、画質は十分にクリアであり、各メンバーのアップも駆使されたアングルは一級品のライブ・ビデオ・レベルなもの。公開時にMCがなく淡々と進む曲間部をカットしていたこと、さらに「Up On Cripple Creek」だけ経年の干渉が発生していますが、それ以外はまったく問題がありません。
こうして見られるようになった夏のツアーの全貌はあまりにも衝撃的。「THE LAST WALTZ」が「グループ最後のライブ」であることに加え「多数のゲストを迎えたイベント」であること、そして何よりも「映画撮影」が入ってしまったことが重なってバンドの各メンバーには計り知れないプレッシャーがのしかかっていたステージだったのと比べると、ここでは正に普段着のザ・バンドによるリラックスした素晴らしいステージを堪能することが出来ます。普段着と言えば各メンバーのファッションも「THE LAST WALTZ」よりずっとカジュアルなもので、その辺りが楽しめるのも映像ならではのポイント。ロビー・ロバートソンを始めとした各メンバーの表情も「THE LAST WALTZ」とはまるで別人。同映像よりもはるかにザ・バンドらしいステージングが楽しめる貴重映像が、Uxbridgeレーベルからリリース。
