Al Di Meola in 1980 sent out the ambitious 2-disc set “SPLENDIDO HOTEL” and challenged a variety of music. Introducing a super-pleasant soundboard album that will pour the intense live performance into your brain.
Included in this work is the stereo soundboard recording of the “August 23, 1980 Belmont Park Racecourse” performance. There are many uncertainties in the records at that time, so I will omit the tour date, but this show is about three and a half months after the release of “SPLENDIDO HOTEL”. It was about three and a half months before that “FRIDAY NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO”.
This show is also famous for being broadcast on the radio, and its air check has produced a number of previous episodes, and has been counted as one of the classics. This work is also the same FM sound board, but it is a branded product made into a CD from the best master released very recently. In fact, the sound is super powerful. Even if you say “sound board” in one word, there are many different personalities, and if there is something like a polished work like the official board, it is an outflow that does not even assume playback on home audio. Even things are varied. This work is an FM broadcast by radio broadcasting, but the feeling is the same as a mixture of “live broadcast feeling” and “feeling of outflow”.
No, actually, I don’t know if it’s a live broadcast or not, but the wild sound and mix are preeminently raw to call it “completely official!” On the other hand, the feeling of exudation like an outflow is also vivid. ２枚組の意欲作『SPLENDIDO HOTEL』を送り出し、さらに多彩な音楽に挑んでいった1980年のアル・ディ・メオラ。その苛烈な生演奏を脳みそに流し込んでくれる超快感サウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に収められているのは「1980年８月23日ベルモントパーク競馬場」公演のステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。当時の記録にはあやふや点も多いのでツアーデートは省略させていただきますが、このショウは『SPLENDIDO HOTEL』発売から約３ヶ月半後。あの『FRIDAY NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO』の約３ヶ月半前というタイミングでした。
このショウはラジオ放送されたことでも有名で、そのエアチェックが数々の既発を生み、定番の１つにも数えられてきました。本作もまた同じFMサウンドボードですが、ごく最近になって公開されたベスト・マスターからCD化された銘品なのです。実際、そのサウンドは超強力。ひと口に「サウンドボード」とは言っても個性は千差万別で、オフィシャル盤のように磨き込まれた作品然としたものもあれば、家庭用オーディオでの再生すら前提にしていない流出物まで様々だったりします。本作はラジオ放送によるFM放送なのですが、その感触は「生放送っぽさ」と「流出感」が混じり合ったような同じです。
いや、実のところ生放送かどうかは寡聞にして分からないのですが、「完全オフィシャル級！」と呼ぶにはワイルドな鳴りとミックスが生っぽさバツグンなのです。その一方で、流出物のようなムキ出し感も鮮烈。歓声も遠いバランスはコンサートの追体験には向いていなかったりしますが、それも悪いわけではない。逆に生演奏の迫力を引き出すにはぴったりでして、苛烈なアンサンブルが前に前にと迫ってきて、脳内に土足でズカズカと上がり込んでくるような押しの強い没入感を味わえるのです。
そんなムキ出しサウンドボードで画かれるのは、『SPLENDIDO HOTEL』の世界をステージに持ち込み、本生テンションで爆上げしたようなパフォーマンス。放送枠に合わせたのか約１時間ではありますが、その分、濃厚・苛烈な生演奏がギュウ詰めなのです。ここで、セットも見ておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。前半は『SPLENDIDO HOTEL』と前作『CASINO』を濃縮還元し、後半はRETURN TO FOREVERの「Beyond the 7th Galaxy」や「Jumpin’ Jack Flash」を盛り込んだ「Race With The Devil On Spanish Highway」でハイライトを画いていくのです。
このセットからご想像いただけると思いますが、本作は終始エレクトリックで『FRIDAY NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO』とは真逆の世界。ディ・メオラもエレキで舞い狂い、『SPLENDIDO HOTEL』でデビューしたばかりのフィリップ・セスのシンセも大活躍。その飛び交うフレーズと目まぐるしくカラフルな音色で脳みそが染め変えられる極彩色のライヴアルバムなのです。
