The original cassette of the prestigious “Kinney” that recorded the legendary scene is a new miracle excavation! Urgent release decision with permanent preservation press 3CD.
The legendary scene is “Dec 28, 1979 Hammersmith Odeon Performance”. Yes, it’s a super-high-end audience recording when I performed at the charity event “CONCERTS FOR THE PEOPLE OF KAMPUCHEA” organized by Paul McCartney and UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim. As many of you know, this show has already been excavated for the full version of Pro Shot, but this work is a live album where you can fully experience the scene with Kinney’s magical sound. In our store, we have been excavating a large amount of Kinney’s original cassettes, but the biggest shocking piece among them was “LIVE AID (Wardour-303)” which was a live recording of a big event of the century. Even though “LIVE AID” has a professional shot, it is different from that … but it gave us more “impression of the scene”. This work is the “CONCERTS FOR KAMPUCHEA” edition, and will be the second THE WHO edition.
Anyway, first check the site. The show itself was a legendary event that sparked a charity boom, but from a THE WHO perspective, it was also the highlight of “THE WHO TOUR 1979”, which revived with Kenny Jones and John Bandrick. In addition, this tour cannot avoid the tragic fatal accident, so please check the schedule at the time.

This work recording the scene is a crystal of Kinney Magic. In fact, a part of it was released as “CONCERT FOR KAMPUCHEA (UO6536)” in the analog era, but it is a digest that lasts less than an hour. This work is the original cassette, and you can enjoy a full show for 2 hours and 33 minutes. Of course, that’s enough for a full professional shot, and the biggest point of this work is the sound. The sound board sound that you are familiar with has a bare core centered in the middle, and it seems to have been premised on TV broadcasting, but this work is exactly the on-site sound. The ticket unearthed with the tape has “CIRCLE STANDING UNRESERVED 127”, and it seems that the seats on the second floor were probably released by standing. Therefore, although it is not as immersive as the sound board, the natural sound spreads the stereo feeling abundantly and gives a strong sense of “venue”.
This does not mean that the distance is far. After all, the prestigious Kinney recorded at the Wembley stadium with a crystal clear sound (“LIVE AID”). For such Kinney (and also for THE WHO), Hammersmith Odeon is a small venue. You can even feel that a natural sense of space is a “closed room”. And its clearness also surpasses that of a classic sound board. The beauty that you can feel the outline of each note, one note by one, is more vibrant and shining than a sound board that is filled with flat plates. The finest audience recording is by no means a “substitute for the sound board”, but it has a unique beauty and vividness, but this work is its highest peak. It even sounds like there is “life force.” [Skin experience on-site experience to understand the true meaning of “historical performance”] It’s delicious just to hear a historical live performance with such a live sound, but the excitement of the scene is also wonderful. Of course, this work is not (never!) Recording that suffers from a strange strange voice or screaming. However, the bound Hammersmith’s room is filled with the enthusiastic enthusiasm and sings the lyrics of the famous songs. Even if the strange voice of each person does not jump through, the presence of the crowd wriggles into a big wave, crossing each member’s every move to the right and left. For example, “I Can’t Explain”. At the end of the song, the sound of “Oh!” Suddenly aroused, but here Pete Townsend was showing the action of turning his arm. The movement was so intense that the venue blew up. With the conventional professional shot, I could not understand the reaction of the audience, and even when I saw Pete’s action and facial expression, I threw it as if I was doing it. However, in this work, I feel the heat that makes both hands goo, fueled by the “temperature” of the scene that instantly boils.
Of course, this is just one example. The enthusiasm of the venue grows with each song, and Hammersmith becomes like a sauna bath towards the end. This show is known as a representative performance of the second THE WHO, but all we knew was “knowledge”. How hot the scene was and how fascinating the performance was. This work is a live album that gives you a “feeling” with the feeling of skin.
It’s not just high sound quality, it’s not just an excellent performance. You might think, “Is there a full-scale professional shot, but is it the audience now?” Even a large classic sound board that sticks to your ears will sound like a “dead sound” just because the music flows on the flat plate. To that extent, the sound of this work is “live”. While proud of the ease of listening and the beauty of a sound board, the performance is felt lively, and the excitement that emanates from the back of the body and the excitement of the body is completely synchronized. It is a new excavation of miracles that reminds us of the real pleasure of live performances.

その伝説の現場とは「1979年12月28日ハマースミス・オデオン公演」。そう、ポール・マッカートニーとクルト・ヴァルトハイム国連事務総長が主催したチャリティ・イベント“CONCERTS FOR THE PEOPLE OF KAMPUCHEA”に出演した際の超極上オーディエンス録音です。ご存じの方も多いと思いますが、このショウはすでに完全版プロショットも発掘されているわけですが、本作はその現場をキニーのマジカル・サウンドでフル体験できるライヴアルバムなのです。当店では、キニーのオリジナル・カセットを大量に発掘してきましたが、その中でも最大の衝撃作と言えば、世紀の一大イベントを生録音していた『LIVE AID（Wardour-303）』でした。“LIVE AID”もプロショットが存在していながら、それとは異なる……いえ、それ以上となる「現場の感動」を味わわせてくれました。本作はその“CONCERTS FOR KAMPUCHEA”篇であり、第２期THE WHO篇となるものなのです。
ともあれ、まずは現場の確認。ショウ自体がチャリティ・ブームの火付け役ともなった伝説イベントでしたが、THE WHO視点で見るとケニー・ジョーンズやジョン・バンドリックを迎えて復活した“THE WHO TOUR 1979”のハイライトでもありました。また、このツアーは悲劇の死亡事故も避けて通れませんので、併せて当時のスケジュールで確かめてみましょう。

【名門キニーによるサウンドボード超えの美録音】
これが1979年のTHE WHO。当初は順調に欧州／北米を巡るものの、「北米＃２」の３公演目にして11人が死亡するという悲劇が発生。終演後にシラされたメンバーは打ちのめるもツアーはそのまま続行。約３週間後にハイライトのハマースミス公演を迎えたわけです。
その現場を記録した本作はキニー・マジックの結晶。実のところ、アナログ時代に『CONCERT FOR KAMPUCHEA（UO6536）』として一部が公開されたこともあるのですが、それはあくまで１時間にも満たないダイジェスト。本作は、その大元カセットであり、２時間33分に及ぶフルショウをたっぷりと楽しめるのです。もちろん、それだけならフル・プロショットで十分なわけでして、本作最大のポイントはサウンドにある。お馴染みのサウンドボード音声は真ん中に寄った芯が丸出しで、いかにもTV放送を前提にしたような感じでしたが、本作はまさに現場音。テープと一緒に発掘されたチケットには「CIRCLE STANDING UNRESERVED 127」とあり、恐らくは２階席を立ち見で解放していた模様。そのため、サウンドボードほどの没入感ではないのですが、自然な鳴りがステレオ感も豊かに広がり、“会場”を強く感じさせてくれるのです。
これは「距離が遠い」という意味ではありません。何しろ名門キニーは、かのウェンブリー・スタジアムであってもクリスタル・クリアな美音で記録していた（“LIVE AID”のことです）。そんなキニーにとって（そしてTHE WHOにとっても）ハマースミス・オデオンは狭いくらいの会場。自然な空間感覚は「密室感」とさえ感じるほどです。そして、そのクリアさは大定番サウンドボードをも凌駕している。楽器１つひとつ、１音１音の輪郭までくっきりと感じられる美しさは平板で詰まったようなサウンドボードよりも躍動感に溢れ、艶々と輝いている。極上のオーディエンス録音は決して「サウンドボードの代用品」ではなく、独特な美しさや生々しさがあるものですが、本作はその最高峰。「生命力」が宿っているようにさえ聞こえるのです。
【「歴史的名演」の真の意味が分かる肌感覚の現場体験】
そんな活きたサウンドで歴史的な熱演が聴けるだけでも美味しいのですが、さらに現場の熱狂も素晴らしい。もちろん、本作は間近な奇声・絶叫に悩まされる録音では（決して！）ない。しかし、綴じられたハマースミスの室内には溢れんばかりの熱気が充満しており、名曲群の歌詞を口々に歌っている。１人ひとりの奇声が飛び抜けることはなくとも、群衆の存在感が大波となって蠢き、メンバーの一挙手一投足に沿って右へ左へと渡っていく。例えば、「I Can’t Explain」。曲の終盤で突如として「おぉぉぉ！」という響めきが沸き上がるのですが、実はここではピート・タウンゼントが例の腕を回すアクションを見せていた。その動きがとんでもなく激しいために会場がワッと沸き上がったのです。従来のプロショットでは観客の反応は分からず、ピートのアクションや表情を見ていても「やってるやってる」という感じで流してしまいました。しかし、本作では瞬間沸騰する現場の「気温」に煽られ、両手グーになる熱さを感じるのです。
もちろん、これは１つの例にすぎません。会場の熱気は１曲１曲を重ねるごとに醸成されていき、終盤に向かってハマースミスがサウナ風呂のようになっていく。このショウは第２期THE WHOを代表する名演として知られていますが、私たちが知っていたのは「知識」でしかなかった。現場がどれだけ熱かったか、あのパフォーマンスがどれだけ魅力的だったのか。本作は、それを肌感覚で「体感」させてくれるライヴアルバムなのです。
単なる高音質ではなく、単なる名演でもありません。「完全版プロショットがあるのに今さらオーディエンス？」と思われるかも知れませんが、そんな方にはぜひ聴き比べしていただきたい。耳にこびりついた従来の大定番サウンドボードも平板に音楽が流れるだけで「死んだ音」に聞こえてしまう事でしょう。それほどまでに本作のサウンドは「生きて」いる。サウンドボード以上の聴きやすさと美しさを誇りつつ、演奏も躍動して感じられ、現場の熱気と身体の奥から沸き立つ興奮が完全シンクロする。まさに「ライヴの醍醐味」そのものを思い出させてくれる奇跡の新発掘なのです。
伝説の“LIVE AID”や同じイベントのQUEEN篇『HAMMERSMITH ODEON 1979 LEGENDARY MASTER TAPES（Wardour-405）』に続き、THE WHOの現場も記録していた名門キニー。その意匠の全貌を永久保存したプレス３枚組です。これまで知っていたつもりだった名演の本当の魅力、どうぞ心ゆくまで存分にご体験ください。
