伝統と王道に則った新作「REDEEMER OF SOULS」を引っさげての来日公演。その報に触れたときも「前回はサヨナラ・ツアーだったじゃないか」「なにシレッと来日とか言ってんだよ」「あんとき泣いたんだぞ。涙、返せよ」……などと文句を言う口元もゆるんでしまうほど、最高にヘヴィメタルな傑作でした。そして、その来日公演をメタル愛に溢れた「西日本最強テーパー」氏が渾身のテクニックを駆使して録音したのが本作です。
そのサウンドは、まさに鋼鉄！　JUDAS PRIESTだからって、適当に言っているのではありません。各楽器のキリッと際立ち、音の粒同士が弾丸になって飛び交うようなクリアさ。ツイン・ギターの厚みもゴリゴリ・ベースもえらくメタリックなのですが、その金属感を数倍に高めているのが、スコット・トラヴィスのドラム・サウンド。とにかく堅い！　本当に金属塊がガキガキとぶつかり合うような迫力です。全盛期のデイヴ・ホランドも素晴らしかったですが、鉄パイプで殴っているような破裂感さえ感じさせる金属色はスコットならではです。
そのメタリック・サウンドを余すことなく録りきっているのが、「西日本最強テーパー」氏の手腕。ノイズもこもりも一切なく、「ステージに上がって録ったの？」と訊きたくなるような直球音質。もちろん、テーパーの凄腕あってこそのブリリアント・サウンドなわけですが、さらに会場が名古屋市公会堂というのも大きい。大阪オリックス劇場や武道館とは違い、比較的小さいホールで、客席との距離も非常に近い会場。アットホームな雰囲気のスペースに、月曜でも駆けつける筋金入りのメタル・マニアクスが集っているのですから、熱狂と激近サウンドが両立できるわけです。「Love Bites」冒頭のゴーンという鐘の音（？）の、なんて重厚なこと……。

齢63にして新たな全盛期とでも言いたげなヒロイックヴォイスが綴るのは、新旧のメタル聖典。「DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH」の30周年を祝う、久々の「Love Bites」「Jawbreaker」が最高に嬉しい！　そして、軸となる新曲も素晴らしい。これほどのベテランになると、新曲を演奏されても今ひとつ盛り上がれない事も多いのですが、今回のJUDAS PRIESTは違った。新作「REDEEMER OF SOULS」は、王道路線ばかりずらり18曲も並べていましたが、ライヴでは４曲まで厳選（+「Battle Cry」イントロ）。まさに１曲１曲が“これぞ！”。一発必中、一曲入魂のベスト・ソング、ベスト・パフォーマンスなのです。特に「Halls Of Valhalla」は白眉。JUDAS PRIESTが持つドラマティシズムの総てをメロディと激しさに託した、新たな超名曲です。新作アルバムでも良いとは思いましたが、生ロブのヒーロー然とした歌いっぷりは、スタジオの比ではない！　「CDが売れる時代じゃない」と言っては懐メロ・ツアーに勤しむベテランが多い中、私たちもいつしか、それに慣れきっていました。昔の名曲を楽しめれば、それで良いじゃないかと。ところが、我らが鋼鉄神は、ここまでの名曲を書き、ライヴでさらなる磨きをかけてきた。ここにいるのは、いつまでも挑戦者なJUDAS PRIEST。私たちが胸を熱くした80年代と、何も変わっていない神々なのです！
