This is 1985-1987 ZZ TOP. 1986 is known as the year with the most live performances in the history of ZZ TOP, which has exceeded 50 years, and it is a super big scale that also appears before and after. Moreover, in 1985, it occupied the British MONSTERS OF ROCK, and in 1987, it carried out the legendary first visit to Japan and the first invasion of the Southern Hemisphere. “ELIMINATOR” was the biggest hit in the album sales, but the tour was definitely the “AFTERBURNER World Tour”. The performance of St. Paul in this work is the best time for such a huge tour. It was the 8th performance of “North America # 2”, which was just getting on track.
This work recorded at such a show has the best sound. Actually, it was awakened by the master provided by the master “Crazy S.”, but anyway, it is very thick and beautiful. そんなショウで記録された本作は、サウンドも極上。実は名匠“Crazy S.”氏から提供されたマスターから起こされたものなのですが、とにかく極太＆美麗。アメリカですので“Crazy S.”氏の録音ではないのでしょうが、「Crazy S.作品だ」と言われたら信じてしまいそう。芯が力強いだけでなく微細部まで鮮やかに描かれており、タイムラグなしに耳元に飛び込んでくるから距離感もない。さらにヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませても判別できないほどうっすらとしたホール鳴りはディテールを隠すことなく芯に絶妙な艶と厚みを与えている。
時おり生々しい声援や手拍子が入るのでオーディエンス録音に違いないとは思うのですが、浸っているうちに「そもそもサウンドボードとオーディエンスの違って何だっけ？」と頭がアホになってくる。ライン直結録音か、マイクによる空間録音か。そんな手法の差などどーでも良くなるほど素晴らしいサウンドなのです。
