A message from Yoko Ono, who lived in New York, the epicenter of the earthquake, flooded the radio station with requests for “Imagine”. The government has called for refraining from going on air. And this program was broadcast two months later. It was also the result of the tribute concert “DREAM POWER” held on John’s birthday (October 9th) in 2001 (By the way, “Imagine” is played as a desired song in this early part. In contrast, AC / DC’s “Hells Bells” is used as a symbol of unrest. It’s also a little interesting to compare John and AC / DC).

● A masterpiece documentary that includes interviews unique to the program

If you have seen the Linda edition, it will come as a surprise, but the composition of the program is a style that alternates between documentary VTR and guest talk. In this program, not only the record at that time but also Yoko at the time of 2001 appeared. An interview unique to the program is inserted. John and Yoko deepened their ties while facing the incomprehension of the world. To portray that psychology, the show goes back to the birth of the two here. John lost his mother’s love at the age of five when his father left home at the age of two. Born into a wealthy family, Yoko grew up in the loneliness of a house without his parents. Two people who are absorbed in music and art to fill the loneliness, and heal the dryness that could not be filled. It has been 21 years since this program. The Taliban regained power with the withdrawal of the United States from Afghanistan, and Russia invaded Ukraine. そんな本作の主役は、ジョン・レノンとオノ・ヨーコ。２人に焦点を当てた日本のTV特番“知ってるつもり”をデジタル化したDVD。先日はリンダ・マッカートニーの生涯を通して「ビートルズ後のポール」を描いた『THE LIFE OF LINDA McCARTNEY』が大好評となりましたが、本作はその「ジョン編」となるものです。
リンダ特集は1999年でしたが、本作が放送されたのはその２年後。2001年11月のことでした。なぜ、2001年にジョンとヨーコだったのか。それは番組が始まった瞬間から明かされる。当時はアメリカ同時多発テロの直後であり、アメリカ全土が抱腹に燃え上がっていました。そんな中の９月13日、ニューヨーク・タイムズの日曜版にたった一行の一面広告が掲載されました。それが……

「Imagine all the people living life in peace」

震源地であるニューヨークに住んでいたオノ・ヨーコによるメッセージによってラジオ局へ「Imagine」のリクエストが殺到。政府がオンエアの自粛を求める事態になったのです。そして、この番組が放送されたのはその２ヶ月後。2001年のジョンの誕生日（10月９日）に実施されたトリビュート・コンサート「DREAM POWER」を受けたものでもありました（ちなみに、この序盤パートでは「Imagine」は希望の曲として流されますが、対照的に不穏の象徴として使われているのがAC/DCの「Hells Bells」。ジョンとAC/DCが対比というのもちょっと面白い演出です）。

●番組独自のインタビューも盛り込んだ傑作ドキュメンタリー

リンダ編をご覧になった方ならピンと来ると思いますが、番組の構成はドキュメンタリーVTRとゲストのトークを交互に繰り返すスタイル。トーク・コーナーではリンダ編にも出演していた○藤早苗氏や久石○氏の他、故内田裕○氏も登場しますが、やはり素晴らしいのがドキュメンタリー。「Imagine」のメッセージから始まった番組は、２人の出逢いへと時計の針を戻します。アヴァンギャルドな作品を通して共鳴していった２人の出逢いと関係、「Imagine」のヒントになった詩集、そして崩壊していった末期ビートルズと解散、そして全世界からのバッシング……。リンダ編でも描かれたシチュエーションをジョン＆ヨーコの視点で語っていくのです。
リンダ編と同じシチュエーションでありつつ、印象が違うのはやはり本人のキャラクターによるものでしょう。この番組では当時の記録だけでなく、2001年当時のヨーコも登場。番組独自のインタビューが挿入されている。本人の視点が興味深いだけでなく、相変わらずのヨーコ節も炸裂するのです。例えば、バッシングに対しても「ジョンが私にセックス・アピールを感じたなんてことはもうガマンできないのよ。イギリス人とか西洋人とかはね」とコメント。英国王室よろしく沈黙の美学として描かれていたリンダとは対照的です。

●生い立ちまで踏み込んで描かれる２人の関係

世間の無理解に直面しながらも絆を深めていったジョンとヨーコ。その心理を描くため、ここで番組は２人の生い立ちまで遡ります。２歳で父が家を出て、５歳で母の愛を失ったジョン。裕福ながら家柄に生まれながら、両親のいない家の孤独の中で育ったヨーコ。その孤独を埋めるように音楽や芸術にのめり込み、それでも埋め切れなかった乾きを癒やし会う２人。一見すると変わり者同士の不可解な関係に、血の通った愛情が感じられるのです。
そして番組の時計は再び「ビートルズ後」に戻り、反戦活動や音楽活動の再開、ショーンの出産、日本での生活と辿っていく。ようやく幸福に包まれたジョンとヨーコでしたが、1980年12月８日を迎えてしまうのです。時計の針はそこで止まらず、イラン・イラク戦争（1980年）や湾岸戦争（1991年）が描かれ、2001年の同時多発テロにまで戻る。不穏と緊迫感の中でナレーションが語り出す。「21世紀を迎え、新時代の希望の中で幕を開けた2001年。ジョンがこの世を去って21年目。20世紀繁栄を誇ったニューヨークに、想像もしなかったあの悪夢が襲いかかるのである。アメリカ国民は怒りに沸き立ち、報復への準備を始めた。だがその時、人々の中から沸き上がったのは……」
ここで流れるのが「Imagine」。あの癒やしのメロディが優しく、じんわりと心に染み込み、番組は締めくくられていくのです。

この番組から、さらに21年。米国のアフガニスタン撤退に伴ってタリバンが復権し、ロシアがウクライナに軍事侵攻。あれほど危険に感じた2001年も遙かに超える、第三次世界大戦の危機に直面しています。北京五輪の開会式で「Imagine」が流れてからまだ１ヶ月も経っていませんが、遙か彼方の想い出のようにさえ感じます。恐怖と不安がヒリヒリと肌を焼いているからこそ、本作の、そして「Imagine」のメッセージが重く、優しく響くのです。愛と平和を求め続けたジョンの祈り。今だからこそ、ぜひご覧いただきたい１枚です。
