The Who’s single release history is one of the most confusing of the 1960s groups, and the large number of releases has always been the subject of controversy among enthusiasts around the world. In particular, the dispute over “Circles”, which caused contract trouble, was notorious as the biggest confusion in the early Fu, but it was also clarified with the passage of time, and all that was left was to wait for the arrangement and release of such single sound sources. It changed the situation.
Thanks to that, when we entered the 21st century, the long-awaited culmination of enthusiasts such as “THE 1ST SINGLES BOX” and “MAXIMUM A’S & B’S” was released, but there was always something missing, and the official realized a maniac release. It is said that the mistakes that tend to occur when doing so have not been resolved.
This was also due to the fact that a pure mono mix for singles could not be properly stored, the best example being “I’m The Face” from the High Numbers era. The original single version normally ended with a fade-out, but in the single sound source collection mentioned above, it was recorded in a monaural mix that ended with a full ending but not for singles. As the official side that put together the sound source, it was monaural, so it would be okay with this … It was obvious that the sweetness of the end was visible.

Fortunately, most of Fu’s single mix singles have been made into CDs over the years, and it would have been nice to put them together, but the culmination was that they were scattered in various edited versions. It made it difficult to produce, which led to a lot of confusion with releases like the one before.
Prof. Stoned was the one who stood up after such an official repetition. It’s not difficult to obtain the sound source itself, so it’s just a matter of putting it together carefully. At the moment, even in the latest single culmination “MAXIMUM A’S & B’S”, instead of the mix for the original single, the guitar solo was recorded in a different monaural take “Circles”, commonly known as “(Shell) Talmy version” Original single The mix for use is also covered properly.
In the first place, the mix for the “Circles” original single has not been released on CD because the master does not exist, and the album “MY GENERATION”, which was finally released on CD in the 21st century, will not be released. has continued to record only mono mixes with different guitar solos (although it was a rare version excavated in the 21st century). Therefore, Prof. Stoned carried out a clean transfer from the original analog single that showed its true potential. It was sunny and made it possible to enjoy the original single mix with the highest sound quality.

Besides, like any British artist in the 60’s, The Who often had hit singles that weren’t included in regular albums, and that worked well to make a collection of singles equal to a collection of hits. It is also promised that it will be a fulfilling content. It was the earnest wish of maniacs all over the world to put together such masterpieces like Kira Stars with the original ones at the time of release. That’s why it’s a pity that some of the Fu’s single sound source collections that have been released so far have been left untouched.
After all, it’s not “work” that can be done in such a careful manner, but the obsession of a maniac. ザ・フーのシングルのリリース履歴というのは1960年代グループの中でも非常にややこしく、またリリース枚数も多かったことから常に世界中のマニアの議論の的となってきました。特に契約トラブルを生んだ「Circles」を巡るいざこざは初期フー最大の混乱として悪名の高いものでしたが、それも時間の経過とともに解明され、残すはそうしたシングル用音源の整理とリリースを待つばかりという状況へと変化したのでした。
おかげで21世紀を迎えると『THE 1ST SINGLES BOX』や『MAXIMUM A’S & B’S』といったマニア待望の集大成がリリースされてきたのですが、いっつも何らかの取りこぼしを抱えたままとなり、オフィシャルがマニアックなリリースを実現した際に起こりがちなミスがどうにも解消されなかったという。
それもこれも純然たるシングル用のモノ・ミックスがちゃんと収められなかったのが原因でして、その最たる例がハイ・ナンバーズ時代の「I’m The Face」。本来のシングル・バージョンは普通にフェイドアウトで終わっていたのですが、先に挙げたシングル音源集ではフル・エンディングで終わってしまうモノラルながらもシングル用ではないミックスで収録されてしまっていたのです。音源をまとめたオフィシャル側としては、モノラルなのだからこれで大丈夫だろう…という詰めの甘さが見え見えだったのでした。

しかし幸いなことにフーのシングル用ミックスのシングルのほとんどは長年の間でCD化が実現しており、それらをまとめればよかった訳ですが、何しろさまざまな編集版に散在していたことが集大成の制作を難しくしており、それが先のようなリリースの混乱を何度も招いてしまったのでした。
こうしたオフィシャルで繰り返された体たらくに立ち上がったのが、かのProf. Stoned。音源自体の入手は難しくないのだから、それを丁寧にまとめればいいだけのこと…という誰もがやれそうでやれなかったことを彼が実行に移した入魂のシングル集が今回のリリース。現時点では最新のシングル集大成『MAXIMUM A’S & B’S』においても純正シングル用ミックスの代わりにギターソロが別テイクのモノラルで収録されてしまった「Circles」、通称「（シェル）タルミー・バージョン」ことオリジナル・シングル用ミックスもちゃんと網羅。
そもそも「Circles」オリジナル・シングル用ミックスはマスターが現存していないのかCD化が実現しておらず、21世紀に入ってようやくCD化が実現したアルバム『MY GENERATION』各エディションでもリリースならず、代わりに例のギターソロ違いのモノ・ミックスばかりが収録され続けてきました（もっとも21世紀に入って発掘されたレア・バージョンでしたが）。そこでProf. Stonedが本領発揮のオリジナル・アナログ・シングルからのクリーンなトランスファーを敢行。晴れてオリジナルのシングル・ミックスを最高音質にて楽しめるようにしてくれたのです。

それに何と言っても60年代のイギリスのアーティストの例に漏れず、ザ・フーもまたシングルのヒット曲が通常のアルバムでは未収録な場合が多く、それが功を奏してシングル集イコールヒット曲集的な充実した内容になることも約束されている。そうしたキラ星のごとき名曲たちをリリース当初のオリジナル・モノでまとめ上げることは世界中のマニアの悲願でした。それだけにこれまでリリースされてきたフーのシングル音源集に何らかの取りこぼしが生じたままだったのは残念で仕方ありません。
やはりこうした念入りなまとめ方をできるのは「お仕事」ではなくマニアのこだわりがモノを言う。既に大ベストセラー、ローリング・ストーンズの『IN STEREO 1964-1966』で証明してくれたように、今回もProf. Stonedだからこそ実現できた念入りかつ全編最高音質なザ・フーのシングル音源集。1968年までの彼らのシングルが本タイトルで網羅出来てしまう、マニア感涙の極上シングル音源コンピレーションをどうぞ！
