In the ‘Rainbow Theater’ performance on April 2, 80 ‘s, there was a long time ago when a single original launch board appeared. ブルースに根ざしたブリティッシュ・ハードロックの王道を歩んだ”Classic Snake”時代のWHITESNAKEでも、バンドの”魂”が最も熱かったのは「LOVEHUNTER」ツアーと「READY AN’ WILLING」のリリース直後。その当時の煮えたぎるような熱いライヴを110分以上に渡って満喫させるマニア待望のライヴ・ソースがここに登場！　ここでしか聴けないレア曲「Black And Blue」や「Love Man」など、初披露となる「READY AN’ WILLING」からの新曲を含むセットリストが、全てのWHITESNAKEファンを痺れさせるライヴを繰り広げます！

WHITESNAKEにとっての1980年とは、デビュー以来の約2年間をかけて育んだ”成果”を収穫した特別な一年。「SNAKEBITE」と「TROUBLE」で種をまき、「LOVEHUNTER」で顔を出した芽は、元DEEP PURPLEメンバーのジョン・ロードにイアン・ペイスという”成長促進剤”を得て、太く大きく実を結びつつありました。その”果実”こそが名盤の誉れも高い「READY AN’ WILLING」と、ヨーロッパおよび日本での人気定着であるのは、熱心なファンの皆さんがご承知の通り。特にペイスが加入した「LOVEHUNTER」ツアー以降は、ライヴのダイナミズムは格段に向上し、バンドの格も目に見えてスケールアップしました。彼らはその勢いをもったまま、「LOVEHUNTER」ツアーが一段落した’79年12月から次回作「READY AN’ WILLING」のリハーサルと収録に取り掛かり、年が明けた’80年2月には最終的な仕上げを行ってアルバムを完成させました。
WHITESNAKEはこの「READY AN’ WILLING」発表を前にして、「LOVEHUNTER」ツアーのクライマックスである初来日公演を、4月11日から21日まで10日間のスケジュールで予定していました。WHITESNAKEにとっては初めてとなるジャパンツアーを成功させるべく、カヴァデールは入念なリハーサルを行ないます。その仕上げとして、バンドは’80年4月2日に、ロンドンの”レインボー・シアター”において単発ライヴを行ないました（これはオープン50周年を祝う同会場の企画の一環でもあり、前日にはJUDAS PRIESTも出演していました）。形式はどうあれ、バンドにとってこのライヴが日本公演に向けてのステップであり、新作「READY AN’ WILLING」収録曲の感触を確かめる重要なステージでした。まさに”この日のみ”のスペシャルなギグを、本作では優良なサウンドによる初の完全収録版で楽しむ事ができます！

この’80年4月2日の”レインボー・シアター”公演は、ずっと昔に一枚ものの既発盤が出ていました。その当時から本公演の特徴であるレア曲「Black And Blue」を聴く事が出来ましたが、不完全な内容はライヴの全貌を掴むには程遠く、マニアは「もっと聴きたい」・「全貌を知りたい」というフラストレーションを抱えたままでした。しかし本作ではオープニング・イントロと「Come On」に始まり、ラストの「Breakdown」・「Whitesnake Boogie」まで、当日の演奏曲を全て聴く事が出来ます。今まで知らなかったライヴの全体像は、いかなるWHITESNAKEマニアも驚かせ、かつ大いに喜ばせるはずです。
オープニングの「Come On」から明瞭な見通しとクリアネスは聴き手にマスター・クオリティを確信させるでしょう。テーパーとステージにはやや距離がある印象ですが、カヴァデールのヴォーカルを中心としたアンサンブルは、バーニー・マースデンとミッキー・ムーディのツインリードもバランスよく捉え、ペイスのスウィングするドラム、ジョンの芳醇なキーボードもしっかり聴き取る事が出来ます（前日のJUDAS PRIESTが披露した壮絶なショウのため、会場のPAがダメージを受けていたそうですが、本録音で目立った影響は感じられません）。
本ライヴでは、この直後のジャパンツアーでは取り上げられなかった「READY AN’ WILLING」ナンバーが聴き所。特に前述した「Black And Blue」や「Love Man」は現時点でこの日しか演奏例が確認されておらず大変貴重。ジョンの軽やかなピアノとカヴァデールのパワフルなヴォーカルが印象的です。「Ready An’ Willing」はすでに知られる形になっていますが、観客とカヴァデールの掛け合うイントロは出来ておらず、最初演らしい固さと初々しさを漂わせ、ここもマニアを驚かせるでしょう。これら新曲に「You ‘N’ Me」などバンド初期ならではの隠れた名曲が共存するセットは”いかにも過渡期”らしい独特のフレーバーを漂わせています。もちろんおなじみのナンバーも充実した演奏で、バンドのアンセム「(Ain’t No Love) In The Heart Of The City」に、ミッキーのソロから流れ込む「Lovehunter」、カヴァデールが魂を絞り上げて絶唱する「Mistreated」と、凄まじい熱演と名演が連発！　会場のファンも素晴らしいリアクションで、このイギリスの劇場公演ならではの一体感ある臨場感と空気感も録音を味わい深いものとしています。
ライヴのクライマックスはこれも初演の「Fool For Your Loving」！　幾分ゆったりした演奏ですが、すでに名曲の貫禄を発揮し、ファンも未知の曲とは思えない盛り上がりです。さらに「Lie Down」・「Take Me With You」と畳み掛ける後半、アンコールの叩き付けるような「Breakdown」・「Whitesnake Boogie」メドレーと、最後まで聴き手を揺さぶり続けます！

録音の全編を貫くジューシーでホットな演奏はまさに”Classic Snake”ならでは。この後のジャパンツアーも凄かったですが、一足先に新曲とレア曲のフルセット・ライヴを観られたイギリスのファンが羨ましくなる最高のライヴです。32年ぶりに全貌が明らかとなったそのスペシャル・ギグを、ファンの皆さんも本作でどうぞ追体験してください！　本作は”Classic Snake”に特別な思いを抱くマニアならば絶対に看過できない必聴・必携盤です！
