今週は同タイトルの映像作品も通常リリースされますが、基本的には同じ放送の同じマスター。ただし、通常リリース盤は極上の映像美をロスレスに収録する２枚組DVDですが、ギフト版の本作は手軽に楽しめる１枚仕様です。

そんな本作に収められているのは「1996年６月29日ハイドパーク公演」。チャールズ皇太子が主催するチャリティ事業“THE PRINCE’S TRUST”の一貫として開催された一大イベントのマルチカメラ・プロショットです。このイベントは『四重人格』の完全再現で注目を集めたTHE WHOを筆頭にエリック・クラプトンやアラニス・モリセット、ボブ・ディラン、デイヴ・ギルモア等の新旧ミュージシャンが参加する巨大フェス。イギリス王室の公式行事であるばかりか、ハイドパークでのロック・コンサートは1976年のQUEEN以来ということもあって世界中が注目。その模様はプロ収録され、TV放送もされました。本作は、そんなプロショットの日本放送バージョンなのです。
この映像自体は以前から有名ですが、本作はその最高峰マスターからDVD化したもの。コアな記録マニアから提供いただいた最高峰更新クオリティの新マスターからデジタル化しています。このマニアはマイケル・ジャクソンやプリンスの日本公演プロショットでも話題になった人物で、単にハイエンド機材を使用するだけではなく、受信状況やテープの保存環境にも細心の気を配る本物。実際、本作の映像美がその手腕と情熱を裏付けている。さすがに時代柄アナログ画質ではありますが、マスター鮮度は絶大で走行ヨレも白線ノイズの１本も見当たらず、まさに当時そのまま。それこそ「公式ソフト化されてたっけ？」と疑問に思うほどの美しさなのです。
そんな映像美で描かれるのは、15万人の大群衆に対峙する４組のステージ。それでは、それぞれ個別にご紹介していきましょう。

●アラニス・モリセット（６曲）
まず登場するのは、90年代の歌姫アラニス。当時の彼女は『JAGGED LITTLE PILL』で一躍時代の寵児に登り詰めたばかり。本作でも「Ironic」「You Oughta Know」「You Learn」といったトップ10シングルをメインに『JAGGED LITTLE PILL』の名曲を熱唱しています。当時22歳になったばかりのアラニスは瑞々しくも余裕たっぷりなヴォーカリゼーションを聴かせ、パフォーマンスも溌剌。髪を振り乱しながらドラムを叩き（と言いますか、スティックで殴り）まくる「You Learn」の暴れっぷりも必見です。

●ボブ・ディラン（３曲）
続いて登場するのはロン・ウッドをゲストに迎えたボブ・ディラン。当日は９曲演奏しましたが、テレビでは３曲「Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat」「Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues」「Silvio」の厳選放送でした。豪快にブロウする「Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat」も良いですが、必見なのは「Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues」。ロニーだけでなくレギュラーのジョン・ジャクソンもバッキー・バクスターもいる中でディランもギターを手に弾きに弾きまくる。チョーキングも挟まない独特なソロをたっぷりと楽しめるのです。

●THE WHO（６曲）
代わってのDISC 2は、いよいよ本命となるTHE WHOの登場。『四重人格』の完全再現で話題を呼びましたが、同時に当時の彼らは６年ぶりに活動を再開したばかり。この日がその最初のステージでもありました。
この番組はライヴ・パフォーマンス以外にインタビューも放送されたのですが、一番充実していたのがTHE WHO篇。前日に怪我をして眼帯姿でピートの才能を語るロジャー、その怪我を心配しながら再始動の意義を語るピート。さらには映画『さらば青春の光』で主演でショウではナレーションも担当したフィル・ダニエルズ、ロジャーの怪我の原因でもあったゲイリー・グリッター、コメディアンでもある英国の名優スティーヴン・フライまで登場。一大イベントに高揚する当日ムードをユーモアたっぷりに伝えてくれるのです。
もちろん、ショウこそが最高。わずか６曲で『四重人格』の完全再現とはほど遠いわけですが、眼帯姿ながらいつも通りに熱唱するロジャーが痛々しくも格好いい。ゲスト陣も非常に豪華で「Love Reigh O’er Me」でリードを弾き、「The Dirty Jobs」ではメイン・ヴォーカルも歌うデイヴ・ギルモア、ロブ・ハルフォードばりのレザー＆スタッド姿で暴れるゲイリー・グリッターの勇姿もマルチカメラ・プロショットで楽しめます。

●エリック・クラプトン（５曲）
そして、最後を飾るのはクラプトン。実のところ、このステージはクラプトン個人の映像作品『LIVE IN HYDE PARK』にもなっているわけですが、テレビ放送では演奏された14曲中５曲だけのダイジェストでした（当時はVHSに未収録だった「Hoochie Coochie Man」が美味しかったものの、それもDVD化の際に収録されました）。当時大ヒット中だった「Change the World」は演奏しませんが、公式に作品化するだけはある素晴らしいショウで魅せてくれます。
