The “STEEL WHIEELS” tour from 1989 to 1990 was the time when we first felt close to the Rolling Stones, and I think these are glorious days that Japanese people will never forget. After all, the Stones, who were at one point widely reported to have disbanded, have made a comeback… and have resumed their tour. The release of that album “STEEL WHIEELS” and the announcement of the American tour must have been a feeling that everyone could not contain their excitement. It was a time when Amelia’s schedule had just been announced, and the possibility of a Japan performance that would later become a riot was still unknown. Before that, there were countless Japanese people who participated in the American tour out of joy that the Stones were back on the move.
On the other hand, while the Stones revived and toured, it was difficult to release audience recording items with good sound from the 1989 American tour. This was probably a reflection of the fact that the taper was unable to secure a good position as it was a much-talked-about tour that only visited stadiums. Or maybe it’s a nostalgic memory of the terrifying item Shea Stadium, which was good until it was released on CD, but didn’t have a chapter written on it. It’s almost 30 years since the 1989 tour, right? I thought it was just recently, but time passes so fast…
This is the audience thing! Live broadcasting of Atlantic City was realized at the end of the tour before this item appeared, and even more so, the audience recording items were completely delayed for the 1989 tour. Meanwhile, the tour entered its second year, and even the sound boards of Tokyo Dome and Wembley Stadium appeared, and the 1989 “STEEL WHEELS” tour finally became a time when there were no audience recording items. Ta.

Once the rush for soundboard items had subsided, audience recording items were finally appearing one by one. The soundboard of the screen video and audio that continued to leak after the end of the tour seemed to have an unnatural guitar balance, and Atlantic City was the last day of the tour. In order to get a glimpse of the whole story of the 1989 tour, which lasted quite a long time, the appearance of audience recording items was essential.
“SHEA STADIUM 1989” or “SHEA STADIUM 1989 FINAL NIGHT”, which has been released in recent years, was a long-awaited item among enthusiasts, so it sold out in no time. It is proof that mania has been waiting for an item that captures the enthusiasm of the tour that cannot be seen just by soundboard recording.
And the audience recording of the 1989 tour that will be released this time is a superb sound source that captures the super upper voltage show at Sullivan Stadium in Foxborough, Boston on September 29th. Strictly speaking, this sound source has been made into an item in the CD-R “BOSTON 1989 1ST NIGHT” that was included as a gift for the first delivery of the professional shot video DVD “DALLAS 1989 2ND NIGHT” that we released in the past. . The same audience recording is used this time, but the upgraded version that recently appeared on the internet is contained in a limited press CD.
To be honest, the difference from “BOSTON 1989~” is obvious. Although it was originally a high-quality audience recording, by using a low generation master, it has improved freshness and clarity as if it had been peeled off. It was released in a state worthy of being called an upper version.
This sound source is as lively as “SHEA STADIUM 1989 FINAL NIGHT” and is really interesting. For example, the audience who can’t wait to sing along to the chorus of “Ruby Tuesday” starts counting, and it’s not just lively. You can enjoy a fun atmosphere. Still, the balance is not such that it blocks the outlook of the performance, so the excellent recording condition is wonderful.
Unfortunately, there are some weak intro cuts in some songs, and more importantly, the recording ended just as Keith’s “Before They Make Me Run”, which was surprisingly rare on the 1989 tour, was heading toward the ending. It’s a shame that it’s closed. However, since it is a day when there is no separate sound source, we do not compensate for these cuts.

Still, this sound quality has a lot of charm for a press CD release. Even though it was recorded in a stadium like I mentioned earlier, the sound image is surprisingly on. Among them, there are many scenes where Keith’s guitar is captured with a powerful sound image, for example, the playing of “Sad Sad Sad” is something that will give you goosebumps.
After all, the performance of the entire band was unusually fast on this day, and the exhilarating momentum was especially wonderful from “Bitch” to “Undercover Of The Night” and even “Paint It Black”. In addition, Mick’s tension was in a considerably upper condition, and “Rock And A Hard Place”, which was a new song at the time, can be declared to be one of the best performances of the tour!
At the time, I thought that the Stones were starting up again and entering a mature phase, but even after that tour, almost 30 years have passed, I couldn’t help but realize that they still had a youthful momentum. I can’t stay. Even in “Sympathy For The Devil”, Keith’s half-hearted playing is amazing, and even the awkward atmosphere of redoing the intro of “Brown Sugar” at the end of the song (lol) can be enjoyed with the best sound quality. Well, the Stones were still young in 1989, and here is one of the hottest performances of their American tour!

1989年から1990年にかけての「STEEL WHIEELS」ツアーは、我々にとってローリング・ストーンズが初めて身近に感じられた時期として、日本人にとっては永遠に忘れられない輝かしい日々だと思います。何しろ一時は解散報道まで広く伝えられたストーンズが復活…からのツアー再開。あのアルバム「STEEL WHIEELS」リリースとアメリカ・ツアーの発表は誰にとっても興奮を抑えきれない思いだったことでしょう。まだアメリアの日程が発表されただけで、後に狂騒曲となる日本公演の可能性は未だに解らなかった時期。それ以前にストーンズが再び動き出したという喜びのあまり、アメリカ・ツアーに参戦した日本人は数知れません。
一方でストーンズが復活してツアーを行った一方で、89年のアメリカ・ツアーはスカッと音がいいオーディエンス録音のアイテムがなかなかリリースされませんでした。スタジアムばかりを回った話題のツアーだったことから、テーパーがよいポジションを確保できなかったことが反映された結果でしょう。あるいはCDで出されたまではよかったものの、チャプターが打たれていないシェア・スタジアムなんていうゾッとするようなアイテムが登場してしまったのも懐かしい思い出かと。大体、89年ツアーからもうすぐ30年ですよ？つい最近だと思っていたのに、時の流れは早すぎる…
オーディエンスものでコレ！というアイテムが登場しない内にツアー終盤でアトランティック・シティの生中継が実現してしまい、なおさら89年ツアーに関してはオーディエンス録音のアイテムが完全に立ち遅れてしまいました。そうこうしている内にツアーは二年目に突入、東京ドームやウェンブリースタジアムのサウンドボードまでもが登場するに至って、いよいよ89年「STEEL WHEELS」ツアーはオーディエンス録音アイテムに恵まれない時期となってしまいました。

そうしたサウンドボード系アイテムのラッシュが落ち着いたところで、ようやくオーディエンス録音のアイテムがポツポツと登場。ツアー終了後に流出が続いたスクリーン映像音声のサウンドボードはギター・バランスが不自然であったかと思えばアトランティック・シティはツアー最終日。かなりの長期に及んだ89年ツアーの全貌を窺い知るにはオーディエンス録音アイテムの登場が必須でした。
近年リリースしてまいりました「SHEA STADIUM 1989」あるいは「SHEA STADIUM 1989 FINAL NIGHT」は正にマニア待望と言えたアイテムであったことから、あっという間にSold Out。サウンドボード録音だけでは窺い知れないツアーの熱狂を捉えたアイテムをマニアが待ち望んでいたことの証でしょう。
そして今回リリースされる89年ツアーのオーディエンス録音は9月29日のボストンはフォックスボロ、サリヴァン・スタジアムでの超アッパー・ボルテージなショーを捉えた極上音源。厳密に言いうとこの音源、当店が過去にリリースしたプロショット映像のDVD「DALLAS 1989 2ND NIGHT」の初回納品分ギフトとして付属したCD-R「BOSTON 1989 1ST NIGHT」でアイテム化された実績がありました。今回も同じオーディエンス録音を使用していますが、最近になってネット上に現れたアップグレード・バージョンを限定のプレスCDに封じ込めています。
はっきり言って「BOSTON 1989～」との差は歴然。元々が上質なオーディエンス録音ではありましたが、ロー・ジェネレーションなマスターを使用したことによって、一皮むけたかのような鮮度の向上とクリアネスを実現。正にアッパーなバージョンと呼ぶに相応しい状態でのリリースと相成りました。
この音源は「SHEA STADIUM 1989 FINAL NIGHT」に負けじと賑やかな臨場感が実に面白く、例えば「Ruby Tuesday」のコーラス部分で合唱するのが待ちきれない観客がカウントを始めるなど、単に賑やかなだけでない愉快な盛り上がりが楽しめます。それでいて演奏の見通しを塞いでしまうようなバランスではないのだから、優秀な録音状態がお見事。
惜しむらくはいくつかの曲でイントロの微弱なカットが起こっていること、それ以上に89年ツアーでは意外とレアだったキースの「Before They Make Me Run」がエンディングに向かっていたところで録音が終わってしまうところが残念。しかし別音源というものが存在しない日ですので、これらのカットに関しては補填を行っていません。

それでもなお、この音質はプレスCDでのリリースに余りある魅力を持っています。先に触れたようなスタジアムでの録音ながら、音像は驚くまでにオン。中でもキースのギターがド迫力な音像で捉えられている場面が多々あり、例えば「Sad Sad Sad」での弾きまくりなどは鳥肌モノかと。
何しろバンド全体の演奏がこの日は異様なスピード感であり、特に「Bitch」から「Undercover Of The Night」、さらに「Paint It Black」でも爽快な勢いが素晴らしい。おまけにミックのテンションが相当にアッパーなコンディションであり、当時は新曲だった「Rock And A Hard Place」に至ってはツアー屈指の名演だと断言できます！
当時はストーンズが再始動すると共に円熟期に踏み入れたものだと思っていたものですが、そんなツアーですら30年近い時が経過した今、まだまだ若い勢いがあったのだと痛感させられずにはいられません。「Sympathy For The Devil」でもキースの半端ない弾きまくりぶりが凄まじく、挙句の果てには勢い余って「Brown Sugar」のイントロをやり直す気まずい空気感までも（爆笑）極上音質で味わえる。いやはや、1989年のストーンズはまだまだ若かった、アメリカ・ツアーの中でも指折りのホットなパフォーマンスがここに！
