The now nostalgic Rolling Stones “VOODOO LOUNGE” tour. From that process, a standard professional shot & sound board called Tokyo Dome in Miami was created, but by the time of the 1995 European tour, interest had shifted to the “STRIPPED” project, and such a standard no longer existed. Instead, with the spread of DAT recorders and high-performance microphones, real-life audience items were created, and for enthusiasts it seems like a nostalgic era.
That too is a long time ago now. Not only have such real-time items disappeared for a long time, but the person who recorded the live performance often releases the sound source as it is on CD, and as a result, the original sound source is rarely distributed among traders. In other words, it’s probably the result of recording by the CD producer rather than the taper or trader. The ‘VOODOO LOUNGE’ tour in 1995 had a very strong tendency towards this, and there were quite a few masterpieces that were overlooked. I think the CD “VOODOO YOU LLOVE”, which includes the Munich performance on August 3rd, is a typical example of this.
Nowadays, there may be many people who don’t know about “VOODOO YOU LOVE” itself. Naturally, this item is made in Europe and is wrapped in a jacket with a gorgeous illustration. It goes without saying that it is still the only item released on this day, and its original sound source is not available among traders at all. And the item itself was difficult to obtain…or rather, it became completely overlooked.

A maniac recently posted such a cool item on the internet, but when I listened to it again, it was a very high-quality audience recording. The European tour in 1995 was held at large stadium-sized venues, and in some cases it was even common for festival-level outdoor venues to be held, so this sound source could be described as “like a soundboard”. Although it is not as good as it is, it is still a pretty good sound image.
Also, although I have picked up a lively sense of presence typical of European outdoor live performances, it never (at all!) covers the performance or Mick’s singing. Rather, you can enjoy the happy excitement of “Satisfaction” and “Sympathy For The Devil” without stress. Rather, the problem with this board was that even though it was a good audience that was easy to listen to, the sound image was balanced to the right. Of course, in this release, we have adjusted that and also improved the overall sound quality, making it easier to listen to than the original version.
It seems that you can realize how easy it is to listen to by adjusting the digital recording of the 1990s with current technology, but in fact, this ease of listening and the excitement of the day are really fun to listen to. It can be said that it is an excellent sound source that has been overlooked, but I think that even enthusiasts who do not know about real tie items will enjoy it greatly.

Due to such a happy atmosphere, the Stones’ performance on this day was in a good mood from beginning to end. First of all, Mick is in high spirits. If you listen to “Tumbling Dice”, you’ll see that he’s already singing at full throttle from the beginning of the live performance, and it’s great to hear that Mick has been in top form ever since. Keith, who perfectly nails the guitar solo of “It’s All Over Now”, which was one of the old songs representing this tour, is also in great shape. Since it was the final stage of a tour that took place over a year, the performance was rock solid. Since August was the last month of the tour, the quality of the performances was all the more high.
It is also a big attraction that there are attractive repertoires unique to Europe such as “Shine A Light”, “Like A Rolling Stone” and Keith Corner’s “Connection” on this day. Of course, Mick sings passionately in “Shine A ~”, and “Connection”, where Keith, who is very excited, starts having fun in response to the excitement of this day is also wonderful. All of these are repertoires that could not have been heard in Japan a few months ago, which makes them all the more appealing.
Then, on the now nostalgic “Rock And A Hard Place,” Daryl Jones played a sharp bass solo, and Ronnie’s introduction of Mick’s members, which was a regular event on this tour, was more difficult than usual. The whole hustle is full of things to listen to that are unique to Europe in 1995, and a hidden masterpiece for a good audience will unexpectedly be revived in 2023. This is a rare audience album that enthusiasts wanted to hear, and the jacket is incomparably cooler than “VOODOO YOU LOVE”!

今や懐かしのローリング・ストーンズ『VOODOO LOUNGE』ツアー。その行程からはマイアミに東京ドームと言う定番プロショット＆サウンドボードが生み出されましたが、95年のヨーロッパツアーになると『STRIPPED』プロジェクトに関心が移ったせいもあり、そうした定番が存在しない。その代わりにDATレコーダーや高性能マイクの普及と相まったリアタイ・オーディエンス・アイテムがポンポン生み出された状況がマニアにとっては懐かしい時代だったように思えます。
それも今は昔。そうしたリアタイ・アイテムは姿を消して久しいだけでなく、ライブを録音した人物がそのまま音源をCD化してリリースすることが多く、結果として元の音源がトレーダー間に出回ることが少なかった。つまりテーパーやトレーダーでなくCD製作者が手前で録音した結果かと。95年『VOODOO LOUNGE』ツアーはその傾向が非常に強く、そうした中で見過ごされた名盤も少なくない。8月3日のミュンヘン公演を収めた『VOODOO YOU LLOVE』というCDはその典型と言えるではないでしょうか。
今となってはこの『VOODOO YOU LOVE』自体を知らない人の方が多いかも。当然ヨーロッパ製のアイテムでヘタウマなイラストのジャケに包まれた一品。未だにこの日をリリースした唯一のアイテムであることは言うまでもなく、またその元音源もトレーダー間には一切出回っていない。そしてアイテム自体が入手困難…というより完全に見過ごされた存在となってしまった。

そんな渋いアイテムをマニアが最近になってネットに上げてくれたのですが、いま改めて聞いてみるとこれがなかなかの高音質なオーディエンス録音。95年のヨーロッパツアーはスタジアム規模の大会場が当たり前、場合によってはフェス・レベルの野外会場で行われることすら当たり前でしたので、この音源も「まるでサウンドボード」と形容されるような域には及んでいないのですが、それでもかなりオンな音像。
またヨーロッパの野外ライブらしい賑やかな臨場感もそれなりに拾っているのですが、それが演奏やミックの歌に覆いかぶさってしまうことは（まったく！）皆無。むしろ「Satisfaction」や「Sympathy For The Devil」のハッピーな盛り上がりもストレスなく楽しめる。むしろ本盤の問題はせっかくの聞きやすい優良オーディエンスであったのに、音像が右側に偏ったバランスであったこと。もちろん今回のリリースではそこをアジャストした上に全体の音質も手を加えることで元の盤よりも聞きやすさマシマシ。
1990年代のデジタル録音を現在のテクノロジーでアジャストするとどれほどまでに聞きやすくなるのかを実感してもらえることかと思われますが、実際この聞きやすさと当日の盛り上がりは本当に聞いていて楽しい。正に見過ごされた優良音源といえ、むしろリアタイ・アイテムを知らないマニアにも大いに楽しんでもらえることかと。

そんなハッピーな盛り上がりという事もあって、この日のストーンズの演奏は隅から隅までご機嫌。まずミックがハイテンション。「Tumbling Dice」を聞けばライブの序盤から既にエンジン全開に歌いまくっており、そこからひたすら絶好調なミックが聞いていて気持ちいい。このツアーを代表するオールド・ソングの一つであった「It’s All Over Now」のギターソロをばっちり決めてくれるキースもまた絶好調。一年をかけて行われたツアーの終盤ということもあって演奏は盤石の域。8月はそんなツアー最後の一か月ということもあり、なおさら演奏の質が高かった。
それに「Shine A Light」、「Like A Rolling Stone」そしてキース・コーナーの「Connection」といったヨーロッパならではの魅力的なレパートリーがこの日に揃っているのも大きな魅力。もちろん「Shine A～」ではミックが熱唱してくれますし、やはりこの日の盛り上がりを受けて非常にゴキゲンなキースが楽しそうに始める「Connection」も素晴らしい。どれも数か月前の日本では聞けなかったレパートリーですので、なおさら魅力的に映る。
そして今となっては懐かしの「Rock And A Hard Place」でダリル・ジョーンズが聞かせたキレッキレのベース・ソロ、このツアーの恒例行事だったロニーによるミックのメンバー紹介がいつも以上に悪乗りといった具合にグループ全体のハッスルぶりに95年ヨーロッパならではの聞きどころ満載、なおかつ優良オーディエンスの隠れ名盤が2023年にまさかの復活。これぞマニアが聞きたかったレアなオーディエンス・アルバムですし、ジャケも『VOODOO YOU LOVE』とは比べ物にならないかっこよさ！
