This is a surprise, that there was a 4 channel stereo version of the King Biscuits sound source (hereinafter referred to as KBFH) of that 1973 European tour! But if you think about it, 1973 was a time when record companies and audio makers were working together to boost 4 channels. It would be no wonder if there was a 4-channel broadcast version of Europe 73 in this era.
In fact, KBFH also performed live broadcasting of 4 Chan specifications in 1973, the most famous is The Who 1973 Philadelphia performance. Even the LP “TALES FROM THE WHO” borrowed from the broadcast was famous for enthusiasts who could play on 4 channels. In such an era, it was natural that a 1973 European 4-channel mixed version broadcast was made.
However, when Stones Europe 73 was broadcasted in the late 1974 when KBFH was broadcast, it was a period when the decline of 4-channel audio, which was not widespread, started due to the oil shock. Because of that, there may have been few enthusiasts who recorded the broadcast at that time.
Still, the broadcasted content is clearly unique. From the opening, it is well announced that this is an SQ 4-channel stereo broadcast. In the SQ system, the so-called 4-channel separation is not so much, but there is a strength that you can understand the difference of the mix even if you play in normal 2-channel stereo, for example, many albums such as Sony to Jeff Beck A 4-channel version was released.
Thanks to this, even if you listen to the CD as usual, you can understand the difference between the 4-channel broadcast mix. On the whole, Keith and Mick Taylor’s guitars are less often separated into left and right, and in particular, Keith’s guitar is often placed in the middle.
”Tumbling Dice is the easiest way to understand the difference in the mix. Taylor’s lead is placed on the left, and the part that swells when the song approaches in the second half, where you can hear the piano sound played by Ian Stuart, which you can hardly hear on regular broadcasts. Another feature is that the drums do not spread from side to side as much as normal broadcasts in most songs.
And most surprisingly, unlike the regular broadcast that was taken from the Wembley Arena, here are 74 songs from Brussels that saw the day in the 1988 version of the two songs “Gimme Shelter” and “Happy” That was adopted at the time of the year. It is presumed that this was a treatment for completely distinguishing from ordinary broadcasting. Of course, their mix is also different from the 88 version.
Furthermore, although “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)” has not been recorded yet, and edits after “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” are exactly the same as the regular broadcast version, this is the 74 version It proves that it is a different version. これはビックリ、あの1973年ヨーロッパ・ツアーのキング・ビスケット音源（以下KBFHと称します）に4チャンネル・ステレオ・バージョンが存在していたとは！でも考えてみれば1973年といえばレコード会社とオーディオ・メーカーが一丸となって4チャンネルを盛り上げていた時期。この時代であればヨーロッパ73の4チャンネル放送バージョンがあったとしても何ら不思議ではない。
実際KBFHは73年に4チャン仕様のライブ放送も行っていて、もっとも有名なのがザ・フー1973年のフィラデルフィア公演。その放送から拝借したLP「TALES FROM THE WHO」ですら4チャンネルで再生できたというマニアには有名な放送でした。そんな時代に73年ヨーロッパの4チャンネル・ミックス・バージョンの放送が作られたのも当然のことかと。
しかしストーンズのヨーロッパ73がKBFHが放送された1974年後半といえばオイルショックのあおりを受け、ただでさえ普及していなかった4チャンネル・オーディオの衰退がはじまった時期。そのせいで当時の放送を録音したマニアもほとんどいなかったのではないでしょうか。
それでも放送された内容は明らかに独特なもの。まずオープニングからして、これがSQ方式の4チャンネル・ステレオでの放送であることがしっかりと告げられています。SQ方式ですといわゆる4チャンネル的な分離はそれほどでもないのですが、通常の2チャンネル・ステレオで再生してもミックスの違いが解るという強みがあり、例えばソニーからジェフ・ベックなど多くのアルバムの4チャンネル・バージョンがリリースされていました。
おかげでCDでもこうして普通に聞いても4チャンネル放送用ミックスの違いが解ります。全体的にはキースとミック・テイラーのギターが左右に分離する頻度が低く、中でもキースのギターが真ん中に居座った配置であることが多い。
一番ミックスの違いが解りやすいのは「Tumbling Dice」。テイラーのリードが左に配置され、曲が後半に差し掛かったところで盛り上がるパート、そこで通常放送ではほとんど聞こえない、イアン・スチュアートが弾いたピアノの音がはっきりと聞こえます。またほとんどの曲において通常放送ほどドラムが左右に広がらないのも特徴でしょう。
そして何よりも驚かされるのが、ウェンブリー・アリーナからのテイクだった通常放送と違い、こちらでは「Gimme Shelter」と「Happy」の2曲が後に1988年版放送で日の目を見たブリュッセルのテイクを既に74年の時点で採用していたということ。これは完全に通常放送との区別をつけるための処置だったのではと推測されます。もちろん、それらのミックスも88年版とは違う。
さらに「Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)」が未収録でありながら、それでいて「You Can’t Always Get What You Want」以降の編集が通常放送版とまったく一緒であることからも、これが74年版の別バージョンであることを証明してくれます。まさかの4チャンネル・バージョンを収録した衝撃のギフト！
