Last year’s Stones showed off their first tour in Corona, despite the overwhelming loss of Charlie Watts’ death. As a result, it was a great success, but the start was a warm-up with a private live concert in which a tent was set up in the stadium. Of course, unlike the main part of the no-filter tour, it was held without being released to the public, but the sound source of the topic that finally became clear with the release of the OBR board. Furthermore, it is now widespread on the Internet.
Therefore, this time we brushed up this sound source that has come to be distributed online. First of all, it is a live performance that is grateful for the existence of the sound source, but it is undeniable that the sound quality is only like the 2021 audience recording. First of all, the sound quality is monaural. It’s certainly a private show that is difficult to record, and although it’s great that it managed to record with the smartphone’s recording app, it’s not a compliment for everyone. Not only was it monaural, but it also had a habit of undulating high-pitched sounds such as Steve Jordan’s cymbals.
Therefore, we thoroughly brushed up these issues with this release. As a result of adjusting the high-pitched swell, which was the biggest problem in terms of listening comfort, at a level where the sound quality was not significantly modulated, it changed to a much calmer state compared to the original state. Since it is monaural, the sound quality is better when played from speakers. That is even clearer with this adjustment. And in this recording, while the sound image itself has a sense of distance, thanks to the fact that Mick and Keith’s singing voice is picked up greatly, it is a quality that can be fully heard by enthusiasts who are accustomed to the audience, especially this brush-up. The results are great.
“Let’s Spend the Night Together”, which decorated the opening of the day, captures Mick’s voice and Keith’s voice that attaches a chorus to him, and it can be said that the good side of this sound source appears. prize.
However, it is the first live stage of Stones who lost Charlie, and it is also the first stage for Steve. For that reason, the performance is literally a groping state, and it is a cautious performance from the previous “Let’s Spend ~”. It’s not unreasonable, but compared to the fact that this song was played so lively in the main part of the tour later and brought back to life, the atmosphere here is totally different. Even Steve can hardly feel the power that was shining in the main part of the tour, as it is unavoidable that the Stones member principal image is a slow starter because of his old age. When it comes to the second song, “Tumbling Dice,” it should be a familiar song, but there are even scenes where the performance seems to stop.
In the first half of the live, such a cautious atmosphere continued for a long time, and the two songs that were unveiled for the first time on this day also continued to be cautious as depicted in the picture. However, when it comes to “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” that has permeated the members’ bodies, the band comes back to life at once. Here, Steve also firmly supports the reply, and it feels good to take the awkwardness up to that point.
Because it was a private live on this day, it was a short set without Keith Corner. So next is “Midnight Rambler”. Of course, Steve’s trial and error continued even after the tour started, so I couldn’t hope for the feeling of explosion like when Charlie was alive. On the contrary, Steve’s fanfare ends prematurely. Even so, the reason why the performance becomes stronger with Mick as the lead is probably because of the repertoire that has permeated the bodies of the principal idols. When this becomes “Miss You”, it becomes even more lubricious, and it is a passage of Prince “Controversy” that Mick hums by sewing Darryl Jones’ bass solo.
In addition, “19th Nervous Breakdown” is also shining momentum to foresee Steve’s great success as later, but when the tour started, his drumming seemed strange at the beginning from “Start Me Up” again. Go back to a cautious performance. In the finale “Satisfaction”, even the scene where Mick sings without laughing. There is something I can’t do about this area because this live was a warm-up.
However, since the main part of the tour was so successful, it is interesting that the careful performance heard here sounds rather fresh. And since this is the first time for the MC part, which has a feeling for Charlie, which will be an annual event later, it is touching to talk in a very urgent tone. チャーリー・ワッツの死という大きすぎる損失にもめげずにコロナ禍で初のツアーを敢行してみせた昨年のストーンズ。結果として大成功に終わった訳ですが、そのスタートはスタジアムの中にテントを張って行うというプライベートなライブがウォーミングアップとなりました。当然ノー・フィルター・ツアー本編と違って一般に公開されずに行われたのですが、OBR盤のリリースによって遂に明るみとなった話題の音源。さらに現在ではネット上でも広まっています。
そこで今回はネット流通するようになった本音源をブラッシュアップ。まず音源が存在するだけでもありがたいライブな訳ですが、にしても2021年のオーディエンス録音らしかぬ音質であることは否めません。まず何と言っても音質がモノラル。確かに録音に難儀するプライベート・ショーであり、スマホの録音アプリのおか+げで何とか記録してくれたこと自体が偉大ではあるものの、お世辞にも万人向けとはいえません。またモノラルというだけでなく、スティーブ・ジョーダンのシンバルを始めとした高音がうねる質感というのも癖があった。
そこで今回のリリースに当たってこうした問題を徹底的にブラッシュアップ。聞き心地に関して一番の問題であった高音のうねりを音質が大きく変調しないレベルでアジャストした結果、元の状態と比べて随分と落ち着いた状態へと変わってくれたのです。何せモノラルですのでスピーカーから鳴らした方が映える音質。それが今回のアジャストによってさらにはっきりと。そして本録音ですが、音像自体は距離感がある一方、ミックやキースの歌声を大きく拾ってくれているおかげでオーディエンス慣れしたマニアには十分に聞き込めてしまうクオリティです、なおさら今回のブラッシュアップの成果は大きい。
この日のオープニングを飾った「Let’s Spend the Night Together」などは正にミックの声、さらに彼にコーラスを付けるキースの声が大きく捉えられており、この音源の良い面が現れていると言えるでしょう。
とはいえチャーリーを失ったストーンズ最初のライブ・ステージであり、スティーブにとっても初舞台。それだけに演奏は文字通り手探り状態といった感じで、先の「Let’s Spend～」からして慎重な演奏ぶり。無理もないことではありますが、本曲が後のツアー本編にてあれだけイキイキと演奏されて息を吹き返してくれたのに比べると、ここでの演奏はまるで雰囲気が違う。ストーンズ・メンバーご本尊が高齢ゆえにスロースターターなのは仕方ないとして、スティーブですらツアー本編で輝きを放っていた力強さがほとんど感じられない。それが二曲目の「Tumbling Dice」になるとやり慣れた曲なはずなのに演奏が止まってしまいそうな場面すらある。
ライブ前半はそんな慎重な雰囲気がずっと続き、この日が初披露となる二曲も絵に描いたような慎重さが続きました。ところがメンバーの体に染みついた「You Can’t Always Get What You Want」になると一気にバンドが息を吹き返します。ここではスティーブもリプライズまでしっかり支えてくれており、それまでのぎこちなさも取れてイイ感じ。
この日は非公開ライブという事もありキース・コーナー抜きのショートセット。よって次が「Midnight Rambler」へ。もちろんツアー開始後もスティーブの試行錯誤感が続いたレパートリーですので、ここでチャーリー存命時のような爆裂感は望むべくもなく。それどころかスティーブの煽りが早々に終わってしまう。それでもミックを主導として演奏が力強くなっていくのは、これまたご本尊たちの体に染みついたレパートリーだからでしょう。これが「Miss You」になるとさらに潤滑で、ダリル・ジョーンズのベース・ソロを縫ってミックが口ずさんだのはプリンス「Controversy」の一節。
さらに「19th Nervous Breakdown」も後のようなスティーブ大活躍を予見させる勢いが輝きを放っていますが、ツアー開始されると当初は彼のドラミングが違和感に映ってしまった「Start Me Up」からまた慎重な演奏へと逆戻り。フィナーレ「Satisfaction」ではミックが笑いをこらえて歌っている場面まで。この辺りは本ライブがウォーミングアップであった故、致し方ないものがあります。
しかしツアー本編があれほど大成功に終わっただけあって、ここで聞かれる慎重な演奏ぶりがむしろ新鮮に響くのが面白い。そして後に毎回の恒例行事となるチャーリーへの思いを込めたMCパートもこの日が初めてという事もあり非常に切実な調子で語りかけているのが感動的。そこへ機転を利かせたロニーがまた心のこもった言葉を投げかけるのもこの日ならでは。昨年のツアー本編が無事に遂行され、さらに新生ストーンズ二回目のツアーが迫りつつある今、なおさら貴重な内容のプライベート・ショーの記録であったことを思い知らされる聞きどころ満載の音源をブラッシュアップ！
