A variant live album “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL” known for “All Sabas songs”. The original sound board album is the final evolution of “GRAF ZEPPELIN” and will be permanently preserved.
What is engraved in this work is “September 26th + 27th, 1982 New York City Performance”. It is the transcendental stereo soundboard recording. This work is the original master of the official work “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL”, but the show itself was completely different between the video work of the same name and the live album. In order to confirm that point, let’s hold the position here according to the schedule at that time.

This is Ozzy Osbourne in 1982. Up to “North America # 3” is a solo number “DIARY OF A MADMAN Tour”, and the video version “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL” is the record. On the other hand, the live album version “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL” is a special performance of “All Songs Sabas” even though it has the same name, and was produced from two performances of “North America # 4”. This work is an Omoto stereo sound board that completely recorded the two performances. The official version is also famous for Ozzy’s vocals being replaced and covered with corrections, but this work is different. It is an uncensored source, and it is a sound source leaked from the people concerned who can enjoy “True SPEAK OF THE DEVIL” for two performances.
This complete sound board was unearthed in 2013. Not only the original version but also the remastered version became a popular work that was discontinued and sold out in a blink of an eye. This work is the final evolution system that refined such a super masterpiece with the latest technology of 2022 and careful mastering of “GRAF ZEPPELIN”. “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering, which has become very popular in progressive rock such as PINK FLOYD and GENESIS, has recently expanded to HR / HM. Sabas’s “THE MANOR TAPE 1983 (Zodiac 487)” and “CAPTURED LIVE 1983 (Zodiac 489)” became very popular, which is a new memory. Pitch correction is fully compatible with random changes, phase shifts do not overlook 1/1000 second shifts, and the accuracy of balance adjustment by band analysis and noise processing that bombs the carpet with the waveform and ears is also abnormal. Ozzy’s masterpiece has also been refurbished with a precision that is even called “paranoid.”
However, this time it has not reached the point of being “just another thing”. The cause was that the original was too good. This time, I went back to the Omoto Master and refined it, but it is close to the previous edition “REMASTERED EDITION (Zodiac 356)”. As expected, the difference from the original version “RITZ 1982 COMPLETE (Zodiac 027)” is clear, and the waveform is different from the previous version “REMASTERED EDITION”, but it is a playback environment to some extent to hear and feel the ups. May also be needed. And it also means the “final evolution” that Coco introduced at the beginning. It is a proof that even if another engineer approaches with different equipment and different approaches, he has reached the height of “no further improvement”.
The ultimate sound is “another SPEAK OF THE DEVIL” and “true SPEAK OF THE DEVIL”. As mentioned above, this work contains two performances in its entirety, but “First Day (DISC 1)” is a live that was not adopted on the official board. It is “another SPEAK OF THE DEVIL” that neither the performance nor the vocals can be heard officially.
It was probably a performance mistake that was not adopted. As expected, the ensemble does not collapse just because of the masters, but it is a surprising performance only on the first day full of unfamiliar songs, and mistakes occur frequently in small details. Rather, it’s a surprising live, “Will you improve that much the next day!” However, it’s not a bad stage at all. Actually, Ozzy’s vocals are in better shape on the first day. Of course, it’s not as complete as the replaced official version, but that’s why the live feeling is exquisite, and there is no unnaturalness that changes with voice quality like the official version. You can enjoy “The Wizard” which was not played in the 70’s, “Never Say Die” which was not played in the reorganized Sabas, and “Symptom Of The Universe” with songs with 100% live performance.
● DISC 2 (Day 2): True SPEAK OF THE DEVIL
Instead, “Day 2 (DISC 2)” is a full sound board that became the source of the official work. Sharon Osbourne was putting pressure on the members, saying, “I can’t synthesize even if I make a mistake,” but that was the second day of the highly complete take. However, the vocals are totally different (bitter smile). From the official version, the withered MC and shouts are so different from the glossy main vocals that it has been said for many years that “it must have been replaced”, but it’s true. However, the severity of the former vocal is unexpected. Even when the outflow master appeared, it was said “What is so far …”, but you can enjoy the daring and rough original voice with the highest quality.
Another thing, the performance is actually partially different from the official version. Replacing songs rather than replacing each instrument. According to producer Max Norman, “I used the take of sound check (the sound source did not come out in the daytime on the 26th) in 3 songs”, but it is also big in performances such as “Iron Man”. The mistake song seems to have been replaced. The bigger difference is “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”. This work is a complete recording for two days, but neither of these super-masterpieces has been played. Norman’s rehearsal take was adopted for the official edition.
“SPEAK OF THE DEVIL”, a live album with a unique shape in the history of Ozzy called “All Songs Sabas”. Ozzy himself didn’t say it well because it was created to solve the contract problem, and it was often excluded from the relapse business. This work is a sound board album that conveys such a strange masterpiece “honsei”. “GRAF ZEPPELIN” has polished the masterpiece of the underground and permanently preserved it with “extreme sound”. 【GRAF ZEPPELINの変質的精度で磨き込まれた最新盤】
これが1982年のオジー・オズボーン。「北米#3」までがソロ・ナンバーもやる“DIARY OF A MADMAN Tour”であり、映像版『SPEAK OF THE DEVIL』はその記録。それに対し、ライヴアルバム版『SPEAK OF THE DEVIL』は同名ではあっても「全曲サバス」の特別公演であり、「北米#4」の２公演から制作されました。本作はその２公演を丸ごと完全収録した大元ステレオ・サウンドボード。公式盤ではオジーのヴォーカルが差し替えまくりの修正まみれな事でも有名ですが、本作は違う。無修正の大元であり、「真のSPEAK OF THE DEVIL」を２公演丸ごと楽しめる関係者流出音源なのです。
この完全版サウンドボードが発掘されたのは2013年。オリジナル盤は勿論のこと、リマスター盤も瞬く間に廃盤・完売という人気作になりました。本作は、そんな超名盤を2022年の最新技術と「GRAF ZEPPELIN」の入念マスタリングで磨き込んだ最終進化系なのです。PINK FLOYDやGENESISといったプログレ系で大評判となった「GRAF ZEPPELIN」マスタリングですが、最近ではHR/HM系にも進出。サバスの『THE MANOR TAPE 1983（Zodiac 487）』『CAPTURED LIVE 1983（Zodiac 489）』が大評判になったのも記憶に新しいところです。ピッチ補正はランダムな変化でも完全対応し、位相のズレは1/1000秒のズレも見逃さず、帯域分析によるバランス調整や波形と耳で絨毯爆撃するノイズ処理の精度も異常。「偏執的」とさえ言われる精度でオジーの大名盤も磨き直されているのです。
ただし、今回は「まるで別物」とまでは至っていません。その原因は元が良すぎたこと。今回も大元マスターに遡って磨き直されたのですが、前回盤『REMASTERED EDITION（Zodiac 356）』に近い。さすがにオリジナル盤『RITZ 1982 COMPLETE（Zodiac 027）』との違いは明らかですし、波形で見れば前回盤『REMASTERED EDITION』とも異なるのですが、アップぶりを聴いて実感するにはある程度の再生環境も必要かも知れません。そして、ココが冒頭でご紹介した「最終進化形」の意味でもある。別エンジニアが別機材・別アプローチで臨んでも「これ以上は向上しない」という高みに達している証左なのです。
【もう１つのSPOTD／真なるSOTD】
●DISC 1（初日）：もう１つのSPEAK OF THE DEVIL
そんな究極サウンドで描かれるのは「もう１つのSPEAK OF THE DEVIL」と「真なるSPEAK OF THE DEVIL」。前述の通り、本作には丸ごと２公演が収録されているわけですが、「初日（DISC 1）」はオフィシャル盤に採用されなかったライヴ。演奏もヴォーカルも公式では聴けない「もう１つのSPEAK OF THE DEVIL」なのです。
採用されなかったのは、恐らく演奏のミスでしょう。さすがに名手揃いだけにアンサンブルが崩壊するようなことはありませんが、慣れない曲だらけの初日だけにおっかなびっくりな演奏ぶりであり、細かいところでミスが頻発してしまう。むしろ「翌日にあそこまで上達するのか！」と驚くようなライヴです。とは言え、まったくの駄目ステージでもない。実は、オジーのヴォーカルは初日の方が調子が良い。もちろん、差し替えられた公式盤ほど整ってはいませんが、だからこそのライヴ感が絶品で、オフィシャル盤のように声質ごとコロコロ変わる不自然さもない。70年代には演奏されなかった「The Wizard」、再編サバスでは演奏しなかった「Never Say Die」や歌入りの「Symptom Of The Universe」も本生100％のライヴ・パフォーマンスで楽しめるのです。
●DISC 2（２日目）：真のSPEAK OF THE DEVIL
代わっての「２日目（DISC 2）」は、公式作品の大元となったフル・サウンドボード。シャロン・オズボーンはメンバーに対し「失敗しても合成できない」とプレッシャーを掛けていたそうですが、その完成度の高いテイクが２日目だったわけです。しかし、ヴォーカルはまるで違う（苦笑）。公式盤からして枯れ気味のMCやかけ声と、艶やかなメイン・ヴォーカルがあまりにも違っており「絶対、差し替えているはずだ」と長年言われ続けてきましたが、案の定。ただし、その元ヴォーカルの厳しさは想定外。流出マスターが登場した時も「ここまでとは……」と絶句されましたが、その豪快にラフな元声も最高峰クオリティで楽しめてしまいます。
もう１つ、実は演奏も公式盤とは部分的に異なっています。楽器ごとの差し替えと言うよりは曲の入れ替え。プロデューサーであるマックス・ノーマンによれば「３曲でサウンドチェック（26日の昼間で音源は出てきていません）のテイクを用いた」とのことですが、「Iron Man」等、演奏でも大きなミスの曲は差し替えられているようです。さらに大きな違いは「Sabbath Bloody Sabbath」。本作は２日間の完全収録ですが、この超名曲はどちらでも演奏していない。ノーマンの言うリハーサル・テイクが公式盤に採用されたわけです。
「全曲サバス」というオジー史上、他に類を見ない異形のライヴアルバム『SPEAK OF THE DEVIL』。契約問題を解消するために制作されただけにオジー自身が良く言わず、再発事業からも度々外されてきました。本作は、そんな異形の名作の「本生」を伝えるサウンドボード・アルバムなのです。アンダーグラウンドの大名盤を「GRAF ZEPPELIN」が磨き込み、“極みの音”で永久保存した２枚組。どうぞ、最終進化系で存分にお楽しみください！
