“February 8, 1982 Detroit performance” is engraved on this work. It is a masterpiece audience recording that vacuum-packed that whole picture. When it comes to new works in the Randy era, there are many versions and upgrades of existing recordings, but this work is completely different. It is a newly excavated recording that has not been known until now, and it is a business that is suddenly nominated as a candidate for winning the 1982 highest peak race.
Before the quality that bothers me, first of all is the position of the show. Even if you say “Randy era” in one word, the members will differ greatly depending on the time, so let’s organize it carefully.

Now, the quality of this work, which conveys such a show, is wonderful. As a matter of fact, it is also a show where recordings have been traded for a long time among core collectors, but it is at a level that does not need to be introduced. Come to think of it, Randy hadn’t experienced a good tour during his Quiet Riot days. In 1980, when he had just unraveled Ozzy, the roughness of the live performance was noticeable, but he experienced a severe tour, and he grew rapidly. “1982” was also the time when Randy’s growth reached its climax. That is the meaning of “the heyday of the Randy era” introduced at the beginning.

これがオジー＆ランディがステージを分け合った活動の全体像。ラインナップは３種あり、オリジナルBLIZZARDのボブ・デイズリー＆リー・カースレイクがいたのは1980年の「英国」レッグのみ。1981年／1982年はすべてルディ・サーゾ＆トミー・アルドリッチでした。もう１つの変更点はキーボード。ほとんどはリンゼイ・ブリッジウォーターでしたが、最後の「北米#2」にはドン・エイリーが参加。「ランディ／ルディ／トミー／ドン」というスーパー・バンドが現出したのです。

……と、このようになっています。『NEW MEXICAN REVELAITON』のみCD-Rですが、それ以外は錚々たるプレス名盤がズラリと並んでいます。本作のデトロイト公演は『KALAMAZOO 1982』の前日でもある「北米#2b」の24公演目でした。
さて、そんなショウを伝える本作は、そのクオリティが素晴らしい。実のところ、コアなコレクター間では以前から細々と録音が取引されていたショウでもあるのですが、それはあえてご紹介するまでもないレベルのもの。本作はまったくの別物でして、「北米#2」の最高峰として知られる『MILWAUKEE 1982（Zodiac 170）』にも勝るとも劣らない新名盤なのです。
実際、そのサウンドは目も醒める素晴らしさ。『MILWAUKEE 1982』がメロディアスな美音だとするなら、本作は力強い芯が耳元に届くパワー系。サウンドボードと間違えるような密着感ではないものの、そのディテールまでも運んでくる芯の突進力が素晴らしく、空気感を切り裂くエッジも金属光沢でギラリと輝いている。しかも、パワー系とは言っても過剰入力のビビリなどはなく、艶やかにフルショウに浸りきれるのです。

そんなパワー系ダイナミック・サウンドで画かれるのは、ランディ大爆発のフルショウ。実のところ、この日のオジーはやや不安定でところどころひっくり返ったりもしているのですが、ランディは絶好調！ リフにキレがあり、ちょっとしたオブリから滲み出す閃きフレーズも輝くよう。そして、ソロ。淀みなく、美しく流れながらふっと突然凶暴な歪みが悲鳴を上げる……そのダイナミズムがスゴいのです。
思えば、QUIET RIOT時代にはろくなツアーも経験したことのなかったランディ。オジー解くんだばかりの1980年にはライヴのラフさも目立ちましたが、苛酷なまでのツアー三昧を経験した彼は、急速に成長を遂げていきました。「1982年」とは、そんなランディの成長が最高潮に達した時期でもあった。冒頭でご紹介した「ランディ時代の最盛期」とは、そんな意味なのです。
