Along with the official work “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL”, the soundboard album that has symbolized the Brad Gillis era has been brushed up. The permanent preservation pre-CD that has undergone high-definition mastering of “GRAF ZEPPELIN” is a blast!
The engraving on this work is “April 28, 1982 Memphis performance”. It is a transcendental stereo sound board recording that screwes the whole story into the brain. Speaking of “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL”, there was a video version and a live album version with the same title but completely different contents, but this work is a different performance from both. In order to sort out the circumstances in that area, let’s first unravel the schedule at that time.

This is Ozzy Osbourne in 1982, which he had teamed up with Brad. The official live album “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL” was filled with all songs from the Sabas era, but the video version was “North America # 2b”, a part of “DIARY OF A MADMAN Tour” that succeeded Randy Rhoad’s death. .. The Memphis performance of this work is also the 19th performance of “North America # 2b”. It was a concert about two months before the Irvine performance where the official video was shot.
Such a show is also famous for being broadcast on FM, and it is a big classic among the classics that have produced countless existing groups from ancient times. We have repeated upgrades over a long history. 2022 is the 40th anniversary of such a show, but this work is the ultimate version that took all possible measures at the timing of such a turning point.
The means is both the source used and mastering. First of all, the source, which uses the highest peak broadcast master. Normally, FM broadcasting is “broadcast master wakeup = ultimate”, but there are several types of master wake up only for this show. This work adopts the same master as “SPEAK EVIL OF OZZ (Shades 509)”, which was excavated 10 years ago and still has nothing to exceed. This was the highest peak in terms of sound, and it was the best master that recorded the opening and ending of the program, and the recording time was the longest without the fade of the CM cut.
And, it is “GRAF ZEPPELIN” that has revived the big standard sound source brilliantly recently. The accuracy of correcting pitch and phase deviations to 1/1000 second is overwhelming, and balance adjustment by frequency analysis and noise processing for each band are at the official work level. It’s also natural because you don’t overdo it while working so carefully. Thoroughly adhere to the concept of “reproduction of faithful sound on the day of the live” without earning a lot of power. It’s easy to hear and beautiful, but you can enjoy the natural sound because you stop just before the performance sound feels processed. This work is also polished by the method proved by many masterpieces. However, to be honest, it does not mean that it has been reborn as a different thing. There is only RKO Radio Network’s famous program “CAPTURED LIVE!”, And it is completely official at the time of broadcast mastering. If you are an audiophile or a professional person who analyzes with waveforms, you will notice that extremely fine high frequency noise and low frequency noise of the narration part are also removed cleanly, but it is different by listening. You may not know. In other words, what is engraved in this work is the sound that is extremely close to the “top of the needle tip”.
The full show that will be the “Blood version TRIBUTE” is drawn with such “extreme sound”. The set is already familiar, but this work is the best super-decision board for beginners, so let’s organize it by comparing it with “TRIBUTE”.

Guitarists after Zakk Wylde try to sacred and faithfully trace Randy, but Brad is not. He was of the same generation as Randy, and although he died, Randy had not yet been deified. そんな本作に刻まれているのは「1982年４月28日メンフィス公演」。その一部始終を脳みそにねじ込む超絶級ステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。『SPEAK OF THE DEVIL』と言えば、同タイトルながら内容がまるで違う映像版とライヴアルバム版があったわけですが、本作はそのどちらとも違う別公演。その辺の事情を整理する意味でも、まずは当時のスケジュールから紐解いていきましょう。

これがブラッドと組んでいた1982年のオジー・オズボーン。公式ライヴアルバム『SPEAK OF THE DEVIL』は全曲サバス時代ナンバーで埋め尽くされていましたが、映像版はランディ・ローズの没後を引き継ぐ“DIARY OF A MADMAN Tour”の一部「北米#2b」でした。本作のメンフィス公演も同じく「北米#2b」の19公演目。公式映像が撮影されたアーバイン公演の約２ヶ月前にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウはFM放送された事でも有名で、古くから無数の既発群を生み出してきた定番中の大定番。長い歴史でアップグレードを繰り返してきました。2022年は、そんなショウから40周年にあたるわけですが、本作はそんな節目のタイミングで可能な限りの手段を講じて極めたアルティメイト・バージョンなのです。
その手段とは使用ソースとマスタリングの両面。まずソースですが、これは最高峰の放送原盤を使用しています。普通、FM放送と言えば「放送原盤起こし＝究極」となるのですが、このショウに限っては原盤起こしも数種類がある。本作は、その中でも10年前に発掘されつつ、今なお超える物がない『SPEAK EVIL OF OZZ（Shades 509）』と同じマスターを採用。これはサウンド面でも最高峰でしたし、番組のオープニング＆エンディングまで収録し、CMカットのフェイドもない収録時間も最長というベスト・マスターなのです。
そして、そんなベスト・マスターを磨き込んだのは、このところ大定番音源を見事に甦らせている「GRAF ZEPPELIN」。ピッチや位相のズレも1/1000秒まで突き詰めて補整する精度は圧倒的で、周波数分析によるバランス調整や帯域毎のノイズ処理はオフィシャル作品レベル。そこまで入念に作業しつつ、やりすぎないからこそナチュラルでもある。ムリクリな迫力稼ぎはせず、「ライヴ当日に忠実な音の再現」のコンセプトに徹底。聴きやすく美しいのに、演奏音に加工感が出る寸前で踏み止まるからこその自然な鳴りも楽しめる。本作も、数々の名盤たちで証明された手法で磨かれているのです。ただ、正直なところ「まるで別物に生まれ変わった」わけではありません。RKOラジオ・ネットワークの名物番組“CAPTURED LIVE!”だけあって、放送マスタリングの時点で完全にオフィシャル級。オーディオ・マニアや波形で分析されるようなプロ志向の方でしたら極微細な高周波ノイズやナレーション・パートの低周波ノイズも綺麗に除去されている事にも気づくと思いますが、流し聴きでは違いが分からないかも知れません。つまり、本作に刻まれているのは、そういう「針先の頂点」まで極め抜いたサウンドなのです。
そんな“極みの音”で描かれるのは、「ブラッド版TRIBUTE」となるフルショウ。セットはすでにお馴染みですが、本作は入門用にもベストな超・決定盤ですから『TRIBUTE』との比較で整理してきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。レア曲の類は一切ありませんが、アーミングを多用するブラッドのギターで染め変えられているのが貴重。ザック・ワイルド以降のギタリスト達はランディを神聖視して忠実になぞろうとしますが、ブラッドは違う。彼はランディと同世代であり、亡くなったとは言えランディもまだ神格化されていなかった。しかも、ブラッドはこれから世に打って出ようという若者。それだけにランディのクラシックスも自分色に染め変える事が出来たのです（この感覚は加入直後のジェイク・Ｅ・リーにも通じます）。
ランディのレガシーが絶対となった現代だからこそ、より新鮮に響くブラッド時代。本作は、その頂点録音の頂点マスターを極みの磨きで仕上げた「てっぺん盤」です。40周年のアニバーサリー・イヤーに「これ以上はムリ」を極め抜いた１枚。どうぞ、永久保存プレスCDで存分に味わい尽くしてください！
