An oasis that is still very popular in Japan even after 10 years have passed since its dissolution. It seems that all the performances in Japan have been released as some kind of item, but in reality, there are visits to Japan that are forgotten like a hole that has been vacant and there are almost no items. It is. That was his appearance at Fuji Rock in 2001. It’s been almost 20 years since some CD-Rs were released at that time, and now many enthusiasts have never heard of the stage at that time.
In the first place, it seems that the activities of Oasis in 2001 have been completely forgotten now, and it tends to be regarded as a transitional period before the stable period of Oasis from the release of “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” the following year. .. Almost 20 years have passed since then, and when I hear about this forgotten visit to Japan, it sounds surprisingly fresh and I enjoy it very much.
It was Kinney who quietly recorded the performance in Japan during such a transitional period. Of course, the audience recording is completely different from the sound source used for the CD-R items released in 2001. It’s a sound image that is a little far from the stage, but thanks to that, there is almost no audience around me (even so, the audience is coughing a lot between songs … I can’t think of it now) Rather than listening to the performance. Convenient. It’s not in a recording state that can be described as a “sound board”, but it’s only the DAT master that has been sleeping so far, and the freshness is wonderful. This is of sufficient quality to be released on a limited press CD.

Oasis of this year started its activities from the appearance at a festival in Brazil, but the full-scale start was the “brotherly love” tour that was held from May to June in collaboration with The Black Crowes. However, at the beginning, drummer Alan White was unable to take the tour due to a hand injury caused by many years of live performance, and his brother Steve took the place of the tour. This is also why 2001 is considered a transitional period.
However, what was lucky for Japanese fans was that Alain, who was successful in resting during the “brotherly love” tour, returned. Not only does this bring him back to the original oasis, but his drums are screaming everywhere. Especially, “Morning Glory” is sharp even if a hard hit is decided.
Also, one of the highlights of the 2001 tour was “Fade Away”, which has been performed since spring before joining Alan White in 1995, but for Japanese people, cheers are excited by the resurrection since 1994. Moreover, Steve White was playing the drums on the “Brotherly Love” tour as before, but at Fuji Rock, it would be lucky to hear the same song on Alain’s drums. In addition, his drumming here is high tension again. It’s as if I’m happy to be back in the band.

Not only the play of Alain with such a spirit, but also the performance itself on this day is very wonderful. After all, more than a month has passed since the end of the “Brotherly Love” tour, and Liam’s throat is in great shape as it was the only stage in July. Moreover, the voice quality itself is still as young as it was in 2000, and every song sings the melody firmly.
For example, “Cigarettes & Alcohol” starts with Noel playing a phrase influenced by the Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” based on Jimi Hendrix’s favorite jam, and ends with ZEP’s “Whole Lotta Love”. It’s a 2000 pattern that ends with “, but Noel sings with Liam, who is in great shape, and Alain’s drums, which are also sharp, make a spectacular version.
Furthermore, the big attraction of this day is that you can listen to the scene of “Step Out”, which was the only show in Japan, with good sound quality. It is a Noel vocal song that was recorded in the “Don’t Look Back In Anger” coupling and has been added to the repertoire since 2000, but since it was not yet set in the previous year’s arrival date and time, this is Japan until now. It is the only live performance in Japan. Also here, Alain’s drums are terrifying, and I’m just overwhelmed by the performance that is twice as fast as the previous year’s version (the ending is too fast).
I came to Japan in 2001, which was overlooked, but in fact, the performance content is first-class, including Alain’s overly tense drumming (laughs). Even so, even the smiley scene of redoing “Slide Away” and “Champagne Supernova”. The feat of releasing such a phantom night on a limited press CD for the first time!

解散から10年が経過しても日本でなお根強い人気を誇るオアシス。もはや全ての来日公演が何らかのアイテムとしてリリースされている感があるほどなのですが、実のところぽっかりと空いてしまった穴のように忘れ去られていて、なおかつアイテムがほとんど存在しない来日があるのです。それが2001年のフジロックへの出演。当時いくつかのCD-Rがリリースされたっきり、あれから20年近い歳月を経てしまった現在、マニアでもこの時のステージを聞いたことがないという人の方が多いのでは。
そもそも2001年のオアシスの活動自体が今となっては完全に忘れ去られてしまった感があり、翌年の「HEATHEN CHEMISTRY」リリース以降からのオアシス安定期が始まる前の過度期という風に捉えられがち。あれから20年近い歳月が経過した今、この忘れ去られた来日を聞いてみると驚くほど新鮮に聞こえ、とても楽しめてしまうのです。
そんな過度期の来日公演をひっそりと録音してくれていたのは、何とキニー。もちろん2001年当時にリリースされていたCD-Rアイテムに使われた音源とは全く別のオーディエンス録音。ステージから若干距離感のある音像なのですが、おかげで周囲にざわつくオーディエンスがほとんどおらず（それにしても曲間では観客が随分と咳込んでますね…今では考えられません）演奏を聞きこむにはむしろ好都合。「まるでサウンドボード」と形容されるような録音状態ではありませんが、今まで眠っていたDATマスターだけのことはあり、鮮度は素晴らしい。これなら限定プレスCDにてリリースするに十分なクオリティというもの。

この年のオアシスはブラジルのフェス出演から活動を始めましたが、本格始動となったのはブラック・クロウズとのジョイントで5月から6月にかけて行われた「兄弟愛」ツアー。ところが、その開始に際してドラマーのアラン・ホワイトが長年のライブ活動から生じた手の故障を訴えてツアーに参加できず、代わりに兄のスティーブが代役を務めて完遂されました。これがまた2001年が過度期とみなされる所以でしょう。
ところが日本のファンにとってラッキーだったのは「兄弟愛」ツアー中の静養が功を奏したアランが復帰してくれたということ。これで本来のオアシスに戻ったというだけでなく、彼のドラムが随所で気を吐いているのが圧巻。特に「Morning Glory」はハードなヒットが決まりまくってもうキレッキレ。
また2001年ツアーの目玉の一つが1995年でアラン・ホワイト加入前だった春以来の演奏となる「Fade Away」だったのですが、日本人にとっては1994年以来の復活に思わず歓声が沸き上がる。しかも「兄弟愛」ツアーでは先のようにスティーブ・ホワイトがドラムを叩いていた訳ですが、フジロックでは同曲をアランのドラムで聞けたのもラッキーでしょう。おまけにここでの彼のドラミングがまたハイテンション。バンドに戻れたことが嬉しくて仕方がないかのよう。

そんな気迫のこもったアランのプレイだけでなく、この日の演奏自体が非常に素晴らしい。何といっても「兄弟愛」ツアーの終了から一か月以上が経過し、なおかつ7月で唯一のステージだったこともあり、リアムの喉は絶好調。その上、声質自体がまだ2000年にあった若さを保っており、どの曲でもメロディをしっかり歌い切っている。
例えば「Cigarettes & Alcohol」はジミヘンがジャムで好んで弾いていたビートルズの「Tomorrow Never Knows」を基にしたメロディから影響を受けたフレーズをノエルが弾くところから始まって最後がZEPの「Whole Lotta Love」で終わるという2000年パターンなのですが、絶好調のリアムと一緒に歌うノエル、そしてここでもキレッキレなアランのドラムが合わさって壮絶なバージョンに。
さらにこの日の大きな魅力としては、日本で唯一披露された「Step Out」の場面を良好な音質で聞けるということ。「Don’t Look Back In Anger」カップリングに収録されて2000年からレパートリーに加わったノエル・ボーカル曲ですが、前年の来日時にはまだセットインしていなかっただけに、これが現在に至るまで日本で唯一のライブ演奏となっています。それにここでもアランのドラムが凄まじく、前年のバージョンよりも倍速な演奏（エンディングに至っては速すぎ）に圧倒されるばかり。
何かと見過ごされていた2001年の来日ですが、実のところ演奏内容はアランの張り切りすぎなドラミング（笑）を始めとして一級品。それでいて「Slide Away」や「Champagne Supernova」をやり直すという微笑ましい場面まで。そんな幻の一夜を初めて限定プレスCDにてリリースするという快挙！
