オアシス2002年の来日公演で東京日程の最終日となった9月29日の代々木はスポンサーを務めたMTVで放送されることを前提に撮影されました。ところがこの映像は予期せぬ運命を辿ります。数日後の福岡で起きたリアム退場事件（2000年に次いでこの地で何と二回目！）に対するお詫びとして、まだ放送前ながらこの時のライブ映像が福岡公演に参加した人にプレゼントされたのです。これぞ怪我の功名ではありましたが、それによって2002年日本公演の完全版プロショット映像が広まる結果となりました。元が放送用映像ですので音声は当然ステレオ・サウンドボード。
おかげで映像は元より音声がライブアルバムとしてリリースされて2002年定番音源の一つとして何度かリリースされてきたものの、これが一筋縄ではいなかない録音状態だったという。何しろノエルのギターの音が大きいバランスで、反対にゲムのギターがほとんど聞こえないという状態でした。
その最たる例が「Go Let It Out」で、エンディングでゲムが弾いたリードギターがまったく聞こえなかった。「Morning Glory」のリフはかろうじて鳴っていましたが、それでも音量低めですし、これが「HEATHEN CHEMISTRY」収録曲になると壊滅状態。もう「Hung In A Bad Place」でゲムが弾いたパートなど、まったく聞こえない。
もう一つの問題として臨場感がかなり低いということ。もし予備知識なしで聞いたら、この日は盛り上がらなかったのではないかと錯覚しそうになってしまうほど。むしろこの映像の音声、放送用音源というより「上質なPAアウトのサウンドボード」ではないかと思えるほど癖のあるバランスだったのです。

2002年当時に同日のオーディエンス録音CD-Rがリリースされており、それをマトリクスで合わせればこの問題は少なからず解消されるのではないか…という声は当時から聞かれましたが、それがなかなか実現しない。気が付いたら2002年の来日公演から20年近い歳月（早いものですね！）が経過した今年、ようやく海外のマニアがこの難題と向き合ってくれ、しかも素晴らしい仕上がりのバージョンをネット上に公開してくれました。
結果として20年近く経った後でその作業が行われたことが大正解でした。ただサウンドボードとオーディエンスを組み合わせるだけでなく、演奏と臨場感のバランス、さらに埋もれていたゲムのギターのバランスなどを調整した完成度を実現させるには、2021年の最新テクノロジーが打ってつけだったからです。
実際にその仕上がりは素晴らしいものがある。まず、あの「上質なPAアウトのサウンドボード」のように聞こえてしまった臨場感の薄さが見事に解消。2002年の来日公演ですので、今回同時リリースのウィットネス・フェスのようなヨーロッパの野外フェスにありがちな怒涛の盛り上がりとは次元が違いますが、それでも元のサウンドボードと比べるとライブ感が飛躍的に向上。例えば「Acquiesce」開始前にリアムが最後の曲だと告げた時の「ええええ！」という「笑っていいとも」チックな（笑）反応がこの時代ならでは。

もう一つの特筆すべき点としては、残念なくらい聞こえ辛かったゲムのギターも驚くほど存在感を増したこと。サウンドボードに対してオーディエンス録音の音を引っ張り上げて失われたバランスを蘇らせるという作業自体、現在のテクノロジーでなければ不可能だったでしょう。単にオーディエンスを組み合わせて臨場感を上げるだけなら簡単に作れたと思いますが、今回のバージョンはコレが凄い。先の「Go Let It Out」のエンディングを聞くと、元のサウンドボードで聞き取れなかったゲムのギターが一気に存在感をましてくれたのです。それだけでも驚きですが、今回の作業を担ったマニアは彼のギターをちゃんと左側に配置。おかげで二人のギタリストのプレイのステレオ感もばっちり楽しめてしまうという仕上がりには脱帽するばかり。

決めては当時ライアン・アダムスがカバーしていたバージョンのアレンジを踏襲してノエルの弾き語りバージョンとして演奏された「Wonderwall」。これが配布ビデオだとノエル出だしの声がオフな状態だったのですが、12月になってMTVで放送（今週の無料ギフトDVD-Rにてどうぞ）された際には修正されており、この曲に関しては同放送のテイクに差し替えてくれたという芸の細かさ。
そして代々木音源の後に収められているノエル単独のFM出演での弾き語りパフォーマンスも既発のボーナスをコピーするのではなく、元ソースに遡って収録してくれるという念の入れよう。当然こちらもステレオ・サウンドボードで海外マニアが本当にいい仕事してくれました。
基本ステレオ・サウンドボードで音質も素晴らしいことから定番と化していた2002年の代々木最終日ですが、どうにも拭えなかった演奏バランスの悪さや臨場感の薄さがマニア入魂のマトリクス・バージョンにて遂に解消され、ビギナーからマニアまで安心して楽しめるアッパー版ライブアルバムへと生まれ変わりました。オアシスの「929」はこれが決定版！

Therefore, the first delivery of “YOYOGI 2002 FINAL NIGHT” with a numbering sticker will come with a DVD-R “YOYOGI 2002 FINAL NIGHT: THE VIDEO” that is a dubbed version of the upper version of the video.
After all, the balance was not very realistic, so even when I was watching the video, I almost felt like “I think the gig on that day wasn’t exciting?” It feels like the performance is going on.

せっかくあのバランスの悪い代々木最終日の音声がマニアによって生まれ変わったのだから、それを映像に合わせればもっと楽しめるのでは？…当然だと思います。そこで今回の「YOYOGI 2002 FINAL NIGHT」のナンバリング・ステッカー付初回納品分には、かの映像に今回のアッパー版音声をアフレコさせたDVD-R「YOYOGI 2002 FINAL NIGHT: THE VIDEO」が付属いたします。
何しろ元が臨場感の薄いバランスでしたので、映像を見ていても「この日のギグは盛り上がらなかったのではないか？」と錯覚しそうになるほどでした。ひたすら淡々と演奏が進んでいく感じ。

そこで今回付属する「YOYOGI 2002 FINAL NIGHT: THE VIDEO」では、あの福岡公演の参戦者へお詫びとして配布されたVHSテープを借り受け、改めてDVD-R化するところから始めました。というのも、当時リリースされていたDVD-R「YOU GOT ME!」などを現在の液晶テレビで再生すると、画面の四隅が黒枠に囲まれて一回り小さく映し出されてしまうからです。
そこで今回は改めて元のVHSから収録し直し、現在のテレビでも問題なく再生される状態となっています。もっとも元がVHSですので現在のデジタル的なシャープさは望むべくもないのですが、もちろん画面が四隅に覆われるようなこともなく、また「YOU GOT ME!」ではVHSの粗さを目立たなくさせるべく画面が暗め、あるいは濃い色合いでDVD化されていました（2000年代前半のDVDアイテムでよくみられた手法）が、こちらは明るく自然な色調で収録されているのもポイントかと。

そして生まれ変わった音声をアフレコさせたことで、あらびっくり！あれだけ味気のない音声のせいで淡々と進行しているようにすら映った代々木最終日の映像が一気にライブビデオらしい盛り上がりを取り戻しているではありませんか。ゲムの音量の低さは元より、あのノエルのギターの音が大きすぎるというバランスも解消され、ずっと落ち着いて鑑賞できる仕上がりへと進化したアッパー版。
代々木の当日に居合わせた人たちが「こんなんじゃない、もっと会場は盛り上がっていた」と口々に不満を漏らしていた映像が、ようやく正調ライブビデオとして楽しめるようになったのです。これによって代々木最終日のサウンドボード・ライブアルバムとプロショット・ライブビデオという最強カップリングのリリースも実現。絶対に初回納品分をお見逃しなく！
