The Gary Moon era, which is remembered as a singular point in the history of twists and turns. A powerful soundboard album that will pour the live performance of the so-called “MOON RANGER” into your brain is now available.
“West Hollywood performance on March 22, 1993” is included in this work. It is a stereo sound board recording recorded at the world-famous club “The Whiskey A Go-Go”. I mentioned the “singularity” at the beginning, but in fact, the “MOON RANGER” era was long, starting in 1991 and lasting about five years. It’s also a time when there are almost no opportunities to touch it, so let’s take a bird’s eye view of the whole picture.

This is the whole picture of the Gary Moon era. The records at that time are quite ambiguous, so please do not believe the details such as the number of performances. It would be nice if you could look at it, saying things like, “It’s been a long time,” or, “You were doing it until just before the reunion came to Japan.” The symbol of this era is the studio work “FEEDING OFF THE MOJO”, but this work is more than two years ago. It was about two months after Brad Gillis’ solo work “GILROCK RANCH” was released.
This work, recorded at such a show, is a super-powerful soundboard recently announced by the prestigious excavation company “Krw_co”. However, it is a little different if you imagine an official work or FM broadcasting here. Instead, it is a complete table-flow system. It is a mix for on-site PA that is not considered for playback on home audio, and if the raw sound is bare, the effects are rough. The feeling of a once-in-a-lifetime chance that you don’t care about a little instability is fully open, and in modern times, you would think that it is an IEMs interception.
To be honest, it doesn’t feel like a polished work or a concert experience, but that’s not a bad thing. No, it’s too delicious for a dry soundboard maniac. そんな本作に収められているのは「1993年３月22日ウェスト・ハリウッド公演」。世界的にも有名な名クラブ“The Whisky A Go-Go”で記録されたステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。冒頭で「特異点」と申しましたが、実は“MOON RANGER”時代は長く1991年から約５年間もありました。ほとんど触れる機会もない時期でもありますし、まずはその全体像から俯瞰してみましょう。

これがゲイリー・ムーン時代の全体像。当時の記録はかなり曖昧なので公演数などディテールは信じないでいただきたい。「ずいぶんと長いな」「再結成来日の直前までやってたんだな」等と眺めていただければ結構です。この時代の象徴と言えばスタジオ作『FEEDING OFF THE MOJO』ですが、本作はそれよりも２年以上前。ブラッド・ギルスのソロ作『GILROCK RANCH』がリリースされてから約２ヶ月後というタイミングでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、発掘の名門「Krw_co」がごく最近発表した超強力サウンドボード。ただし、ここで公式作やFM放送をイメージされてしまうとちょっと違う。そうではなく、完全なる卓流出系です。家庭用オーディオでの再生など考慮されていない現場PA用ミックスで、生音も丸出しならエフェクトも荒っぽい。多少の不安定感など気にも留めない一期一会の現場感が全開で、現代ならIEMs傍受だと思うことでしょう。
正直言えば、磨き込まれた作品感もコンサート体験感も微塵もなかったりするのですが、それが悪いわけではない。いや、むしろ擦れっ枯らしのサウンドボード・マニアには美味しすぎる。アコギのナイロン弦１本の振動まで克明な鮮やかさは凄まじく、息づかいもマイクの網を通る流入感まで画かれる。ヘッドフォンで聴けば、それこそ頭蓋がPAシステムの一部になったような異次元のシンクロ感を味わえるのです。これこそ流出サウンドボード最大の旨み。公式代わりの作品感を求められるFM放送や、現場の体験感を美味しいオーディエンス録音とはまったく異なる醍醐味なのです。
